The nine-months-pregnant wife of a U.S. soldier on deployment overseas was stabbed multiple times while the couple was video chatting, police said.
Rachel Poole, 31, of El Paso, Texas, had just walked into her home Wednesday while talking to her husband via FaceTime when an intruder who had been hiding inside the residence attacked her from behind with a knife, according to a police affidavit filed in El Paso County court.
Police said the attacker was Corey Bernard Moss, a 19-year-old soldier based at nearby U.S. Army Base Fort Bliss, who had come to Poole's house to confront her over money he owed her.
Poole recognized her attacker and screamed out his name to her spouse, who could hear the struggle over the phone. Moss knocked the woman to the floor, assaulting her and stabbing her several times, police said. He then fled the home and asked a co-worker to drive him to his base.
In the meantime, Poole managed to call 911 and named Moss as the assailant. Her husband, Justin Poole, called Moss's co-workers, who confronted him once he arrived at Fort Bliss. The knife used in the attack was found in the vehicle Moss came in, police said.
Authorities also said Moss admitted to beating and stabbing Poole when he was taken into custody. He is now facing charges of attempted murder.
The woman was admitted into a local hospital with multiple stab wounds and fractures. On Friday, Poole gave birth to a baby girl -- but NBC station KTSM of El Paso reported she remained in critical condition.
The New York Daily News reported that Justin Poole is a private who has been stationed in southwest Asia. He was flown home to be with his wife, the Daily News reported.
