'Apologetic bandit' caught after series of stickups

An alleged thief dubbed the “Apologetic Bandit” for his polite, remorseful tone while committing a string of robberies is in custody on suspicion of holding up at least 10 gas stations and convenience stores in Orange County over the past year.

Farhad Sharifi, 19, was arrested Jan. 31 after allegedly committing an armed robbery at a 7-Eleven convenience store in Lake Forest, authorities said.

Orange County Sheriff’s deputies followed a suspicious vehicle from the area at about 3 a.m. and took Sharifi into custody after a foot pursuit.

After further investigation, the sheriff’s department believes Sharifi is responsible for close to 10 robberies since 2012. Authorities have recovered an air soft gun, clothing and a mask that are similar to those worn by the bandit.

An October 2013 robbery linked to Sharifi was caught on camera. In surveillance video, embedded below, authorities said the man could be heard telling the clerk before leaving, “Have a good night, man. Sorry.”
