Prisons group withdraws $6 million gift for Florida Atlantic University

    By Brian Hamacher, NBCMiami.com

The Boca Raton, Fla., prison company that donated $6 million to Florida Atlantic University to change the name of the college's football stadium has withdrawn the gift, the company said Monday.

GEO Group announced that they informed FAU that the gift would be withdrawn and the stadium would no longer be named GEO Group Stadium, calling criticism against the move an "ongoing distraction."

"What was originally intended as a gesture of GEO’s goodwill to financially assist the University’s athletic scholarship program has surprisingly evolved into an ongoing distraction to both of our organizations," GEO Group Chairman and CEO George Zoley said in a statement. "We employ many FAU graduates and Boca Raton community members. We take pride in running a well-respected company and are proud of our long-term support of the University."

Shortly after the $6 million gift was announced in February, students and activists expressed outrage, saying some facilities operated by the group have come under fire for human rights violations.

FAU's Faculty Senate opposed the name change and the student government was expected to also vote on a similar resolution later this week.

The gift would have been a 12-year commitment with annual payments of $500,000.

"FAU alumnus and Trustee Emeritus George Zoley and his colleagues have been loyal supporters of this University," FAU President Mary Jane Saunders said in the same statement. "We are thankful for all of the companies, organizations and individuals who give to this university to support our mission, our pursuit of academic excellence and valuable contributions to this community."

Here in America, we like to make people criminals for stupid crap so that a "prison company" can profit enough to donate millions of dollars..it sounds like something out of a bad movie, only it's true.

Fla. woman offered year of free parking after insult written on valet ticket

    By Christina Hernandez, NBCMiami.com

After a South Florida woman picked up her car from valet, something was left inside it – an insult written on the ticket.

"I was mortified," Sharyn Peoples said. "In handwriting it said 'play, red dress, and fat' on it."

Peoples was at Mizner Park in Boca Raton to act in a play earlier this month. She was wearing a red dress. But she said writing the word "fat" on her valet ticket crosses the line.

Peoples was so upset, she reached out to LAZ Parking of Florida.

"It's only words and it's from some kid, and that's one of the things the guy said to me on the phone. He said, 'You know, we employ 18- and 20-year-old kids.' I said, 'Sir, they're legally adults.'"

After their conversation on the phone, Peoples received an e-mail from Dan Silva of LAZ Parking of South Florida that started out with "Please accept our sincerest apologies." Part of it also said that moving forward "physical appearance will not be written on tickets" and that "this type of situation will never occur again."

In the e-mail written to Peoples, Silva also offered her free valet parking for next year and a gift card to a restaurant at Mizner Park.

"We deeply regret this incident and the company has apologized to the customer and the employee has been disciplined," said Luis Macedo, the general manager of LAZ Parking of Florida, in a statement on Friday. "LAZ Parking continues to be committed to providing the best customer experience possible."

Peoples said she is devastated by what happened, and doubts she is the first customer to fall victim to this kind of treatment. Now, she hopes whoever did it is fired and the insults are curbed.

"People should not accept employees slandering their patrons in any way, shape, or form," she said.

Peoples doesn't know which employee wrote the insult on her valet ticket, but she has a message for the writer.

"I feel bad for you that your parents obviously didn't raise you well enough, and I hope you understand this is not at all acceptable," she said.

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

    NBC News

Helicopter video shows authorities searching for the gunman Thursday, Nov. 29, at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

New in this version: Lockdowns lifted; alleged gunman not found

Updated at 4:26 p.m. ET: Two Florida colleges were back to "normal business" Thursday after police locked them down for three hours searching for a gunman believed to have robbed a student on campus.

The alleged gunman wasn't found after the robbery in the Arts and Letters Building at at Florida Atlantic University, which is in Boca Raton, about 60 miles north of Miami. A lockdown was also lifted at the Boca Raton campus of Palm Beach State College, which is near Florida Atlantic.

No shots were fired, and no injuries were reported, campus police said.

Edgar Zuniga Jr. of NBC News and NBC 6 of Miami contributed to this report. Follow M. Alex Johnson on Twitter and Facebook.

Florida Atlantic said the suspect is a male, about 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with a muscular build, wearing a white shirt and pants. The university told NBC Miami that he was believed to have robbed a student at gunpoint.

"The suspect placed a small handgun to the victim's head and then fled on foot after taking some of the victim's possessions," it said in an email statement.

The University Press, the college's student-run magazine, reported on its Twitter account that students in the complex could hear helicopters hovering overhead.

"I'm scared. FAU houses the crazies," Catherine O'Rourke, a senior design major who was hiding under a table in the Visual Arts building, told the publication.

Students, faculty and staff were told to shelter in place, and visitors were told to avoid the campus.
