Six-year-old critical after being shot by her 13 year old brother

    NBC 6 South Florida

A 6-year-old girl was shot by her 13-year-old brother in Oakland Park according to investigators.

    By Gilma Avalos, NBCMiami.com

A six-year-old Florida girl was in critical condition Sunday after being shot by her 13-year-old brother Saturday night in a city just north of Fort Lauderdale.

Neighbors said the two children were playing a game when the shooting occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday in Oakland Park, a city in Broward Country.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

"They were playing hide and go seek. I don't know how it went down but he shot his sister," said neighbor Peter Milano, who saw a frantic woman he thought was the children's aunt running down the block.

"She came up to me 'Is she ok? Is she ok?' At the time I didn't know what she was talking about," Milano said.

It's not clear if authorities will pursue criminal charges in the case. Detectives believe the shooting was accidental but were still trying to determine exactly how the teen got access to the gun. The children were home alone at the time of the incident, said Dani Moschella, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Homicide detectives spent time talking with the 13-year-old. Neighbors said he drew pictures for investigators as he described what happened.

"The kid's probably, well, how could you feel, you just shot your sister?" Milano said.

Though detectives are specially trained to deal with the most sensitive situations, Moschella said the fact that two children are involved made this job that much more difficult.

"It is very difficult when dealing with children, specifically children who've been through a very traumatic situation," she said. "This family will never be the same after tonight, no matter how it ends up."

The 6-year-old is in critical condition at Broward Health Medical Center.

When are authorities going to start charging the parents in cases like this with manslaughter for failing to secure their guns so that children can not access them? Just like the stupid, ignorant parents of the five-year-old boy who killed his toddler sister this past week.

Nabbed: One of US Marshals' 15 most wanted captured in Florida

    Broward Sheriff's Office

Felipe Alex Torrealba was among the U.S. Marshals' 15 most wanted fugitives.

    By NBCMiami.com

One of the U.S. Marshals Service's 15 most wanted fugitives was arrested Thursday in Fort Myers, Fla., authorities said.

Murder suspect Felipe Alex Torrealba was being transported to the Broward County Jail Thursday night, according to U.S. Marshals Service spokesman Barry Golden.

Earlier this year, the Broward Sheriff's Office described Torrealba as a suspect in the murder of Kris Smalls, 42, of Weston, Fla., who was found dead in his SUV in March a week after he was reported missing.

Two handguns, about $15,000 in cash, a pair of binoculars and a wig were found inside the two-story townhouse where Torrealba was arrested, the U.S. Marshals Service said in a statement.

    More stories from NBCMiami.com

A rental vehicle with two different Texas license plates, which was parked outside the townhouse, is believed to be the vehicle that Torrealba used to elude law enforcement, the agency said.

Torrealba's attorney, Jim Lewis, said he has not heard from his client since February.

"These are some very serious allegations, and when he's returned here to Broward County I hope to sit down and talk with him, and get to the bottom of them, and find out what the truth is," Lewis said.

Torrealba was also wanted in connection with a January incident in which he was shot in the ear by a Sweetwater Police officer as he fled a traffic stop.

13-year-old girl helps police catch burglars in house

"We actually kind of ran but we were actually really scared. Never been in that kind of situation before."

    Follow @msnbc_us

That's how 13-year-old Alexis Stannis describes what she and younger brother Darren did -- hiding in a bedroom closet and calling 911 -- when intruders broke into their Pompano Beach, Fla., home on Thursday.

Both children were honored Monday for their quick reaction and calm demeanor during the incident.

While their parents were at work, 10-year-old Darren told his older sister he heard suspicious sounds outside the house. Alexis then saw intruders trying to come inside through an unlocked back window.

"Well, they knocked on my front door I didn't answer, and I saw one of them walk around the house and then I just went back to my room, and then Darren realizes they're on the back porch trying to break in."

Alexis grabbed Darren and a cell phone, and the two hid inside a closet. Alexis called 911. In a shaky voice, she provided the necessary information to the dispatcher and police, who arrived and surrounded the house.

"They were like, where are they in the house? Do you hear them? What's going on? Are you still in your closet? Yeah."

When police entered the home, they found three older teens hiding in the closet of another bedroom.

The three teens, one 17 years old and two who are 15, were caught with a knife, which they admitted to using to break into the house next door, police said.

All three were charged with armed burglary, NBCMiami.com reported.

The Stannises' mother, Tracey Stout, said she was proud of both her children for being so calm in such a dangerous situation.

"I'm really proud of my kids, they did a good job," she told reporters. "It's hard listening to the tape the 911 call but they really did a good job."

Both children were awarded with lapel pins and awards of excellence by Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti at a press conference on Monday.

Lamberti commended Alexis for her bravery and quick actions.

"She responded better than a lot of adults would in a very similar situation. She remained calm," Lamberti told NBCMiami.com.

Loyal dog leads rescuers to owner's car wreck

    By NBCMiami.com and msnbc.com staff

A dog whose owner was involved in a late-night car wreck in south Florida helped lead firefighters to the man, officials said.

Gregory Todd Travers, 41, lost control of his car, slammed into a bridge support and rolled over on the darkened stretch of road in Broward County on Saturday night, Davie Battalion Chief Robert Belizaire told the Sun Sentinel.

As firefighters searched the scene for Travers' car on State Road 84 in Davie, they stumbled upon his German shepherd, Simon, limping on the side of the road, Belizaire told the newspaper.

Simon helped lead the firefighters to Travers' car, which was about a quarter mile away. When they reached Travers, Simon circled him twice and licked him, trying to get a response, before he jumped in the car and waited.

It was too late, however, and Travers died at the scene.

"I think the dog definitely meant to lead them there," Belizaire told the Sun Sentinel. "I think he was out there looking for some help."

Simon was taken to the Broward County animal shelter and later picked up by Travers' wife.

“The dog is back home,” shelter spokeswoman Lisa Mendheim told the Sun Sentinel.

Judge tells man charged with domestic violence to take wife to Red Lobster

    By NBCMiami.com

Domestic violence advocates criticized a judge who suggested that a Florida man apologize to his wife for grabbing her neck by taking her out to dinner.

A Florida county judge rankled domestic violence advocates when he ordered a man arrested for grabbing his wife’s neck to return home with flowers and take her out to dinner.

“He’s going to get a card, he’s going to get flowers, and then he’s going to go home, pick up his wife, get dressed and take her to Red Lobster, and then after they have Red Lobster, they’re going to go bowling,” Broward County Judge John Hurley said.

Read the original story at NBCMiami.com.

Mary Reidel, president of Women in Distress, said the judge should treat domestic violence cases more seriously.

“Today’s push could be tomorrow’s more serious incident,” Reidel said.

Free 'breast exams' earn man, 81, prison term

    Broward Sheriff's Office

Philip Winikoff, 81, admitted to fondling two women in 2006.

    By msnbc.com staff

An 81-year-old Florida man who claimed he was a doctor and went door-to-door offering free breast exams was sentenced to 13 months' jailtime on Friday.

Philip Winikoff, of Coconut Creek, admitted approaching women in a Lauderdale Lakes apartment complex in 2006 under the guise of a doctor who was performing complementary breast exams in the area. Prosecutors said two women were assaulted before Winikoff was caught.

At his hearing, a judge also said Winikoff will be on probation for 15 years after his release from prison under the terms of a plea deal reached with prosecutors this week, reported NBCMiami.com.

According to Prosecutor Lawren Zann, Winikoff, carrying a black bag, introduced himself as a doctor to his victims and got them to invite him into their apartments. The first woman's boyfriend was in a different room in the apartment as Winikoff massaged her breasts and asked her to undress, Zann said, reported Florida's Sun-Sentinel.

He then allegedly fondled her genitals before the woman stopped the exam. He immediately found his next victim in the same apartment complex, and repeated the ruse, Zann said.

Winikoff was charged with sexual battery and practicing medicine without a license. Several family members were in court on his behalf, including his wife, The Sun-Sentinel reported.

Had Winikoff been convicted at trial, he could have faced up to 55 years in prison.
