School bus surveillance video appears to show driver booting autistic girl onto ground

A video camera captures a school bus driver literally kicking a special needs child off the bus, resulting in a broken ankle. WFLA's Josh Thomas reports.

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

A Florida school district has released video that appears to show a bus driver kicking an autistic student down the stairs.

In the video released Wednesday by Hillsborough County schools, bus driver Stephanie Wilkerson, 42, stands behind an 8-year-old girl as she hesitates on the stairs. According to the sheriff's office, the student slaps Wilkerson, who then appears to use her foot to kick the girl in the back, causing her to fly down the stairs and onto the ground.

Wilkerson was fired after the Sept. 28, 2012, incident, which Tampa police say resulted in a broken ankle for the young girl, reported NBC affiliate WFLA.com. Wilkerson now faces aggravated child abuse charges, the station said.

"If a bus driver or teacher or anyone makes contact with a student that results in injury, we take that very, very seriously," Steve Hagerty, spokesman for Hillsborough County school district, told WFLA.com. "You are the adult. You have to show restraint. You are held to a very high standard. Pushing a student where they fall of the bus and injure themselves -- it is obviously beyond anything they are allowed to do."

Wilkerson has not spoken to any media outlets. WFLA.com attempted to reach her for comment, but was unable to. It's unclear whether or not she is represented by an attorney.

The girl's parents are suing the Hillsborough County school district, which has seen two special needs students die since the September bus incident, according to local media.

In October, 10-year-old Jenny Caballero, who had Down Syndrome, drowned in a nearby pond after wandering from her middle school gym class. In November, Isabella Herrera, a 7-year-old who was confined to a wheelchair because of a neuromuscular disorder, stopped breathing on her bus ride to school. An aide noticed during the ride that Isabella was in distress, but neither the aide nor the driver stopped the ride to call 911, Isabella's parents say.

The school district has created a task force to make sure children with special needs receive the proper treatment they need at school and en route to school since firing Wilkerson, Hagerty said.

N.J. bus driver falls asleep behind wheel en route to Manhattan, passengers say

    By Brynn Gingras, NBCNewYork.com

An NJ Transit driver fell asleep behind the wheel Monday morning, causing a crash that put 50 bus passengers in danger on their way into Manhattan, NBC 4 New York has learned exclusively.

Several passengers on board the 166-X bus from Englewood to Port Authority tell NBC 4 New York the driver nodded off and lost control of the bus, swerving into the guardrail and nearly falling off an overpass that runs above I-495.

Lila Noble, who was sitting toward the front of the bus, said she suddenly heard "clang, bang, boom."

"I looked up from my email and I saw that we were almost off the guardrail," she said.

Riders said the bus driver was startled awake when a woman on board screamed.

The driver pulled over, but only after the riders demanded he do so, passengers told NBC 4 New York.

"He said, 'Stay on, we can go,'" said Noble. "Nobody wanted any part of that."

Another bus picked up the passengers and continued the route. No one was hurt.

Several passengers filed complaints about the driver and the crash, but they said they haven't received a response to the incident.

NJ Transit spokesman John Durso said the bus operator was taken out of service as NJ Transit conducts an investigation.

That's only some relief to those passengers who are now second-guessing their commute.

"It needs to be addressed why inexperienced drivers are operating buses with 50 people's lives in their hands," said Noble.

I'm not saying that the passengers don't have a right to be scared. It doesen't matter if the driver was inexperienced or not if the human body is tired it's tired and Dispatch does not care if you are TIRED. The attitude of the dispatcher is "I DON'T GIVE A FVCK GET YOUR AZZ ON THAT BUS AND DRIVE O …

NY bus driver catches girl, 7, in three-story plunge

Dramatic video captured a seven-year-old falling from a third-story window and being caught by a neighbor. NBC's Katy Tur reports.

    By NBCNewYork.com

A city bus driver says he was thinking of his own young daughter when he rushed to catch a 7-year-old girl plunging three stories from a New York building Monday – an action caught on video.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

"Please let me catch her, please let me catch her," Stephen St. Bernard, 52, recalled thinking. "That's all I could say. Let me catch the little baby."

"I think about my daughter, and you know, she's a little kid," he said.

St. Bernard, an MTA bus driver of 10 years, was returning home to Coney Island from his job at about 2 p.m. when he heard screams coming from a building courtyard.

He rushed toward the commotion and saw a girl standing on top of a third-floor window air conditioning unit. He immediately ran underneath the window.

"She just stood up there teetering, teetering," he said.

See the original story at NBCNewYork.com

Amateur video shows St. Bernard shouting up to the girl, trying to talk the girl into going back into her apartment. Suddenly, the girl falls, eliciting horrified screams from neighbors.

But St. Bernard catches her in his arms, stumbling slightly forward to the ground with the girl still firmly in his grasp.

"I picked her up and carried her, and I was holding her, rubbing her, and she just more or less kept looking around," he told NBC 4 New York. "She never closed her eyes, she didn't lose consciousness."

The girl was not wearing pants, and St. Bernard wrapped her in his MTA uniform shirt as he waited for paramedics to arrive.

She was taken to Coney Island Hospital with very minor injuries.

"He's my hero," said the girl's aunt, Monique Harding. "He definitely did our family a favor today."

Police sources said the girl has autism. Her mother was inside the apartment watching her other child and did not see the girl standing outside on the A/C, the sources said.

St. Bernard sustained a torn tendon in his shoulder but he is expected to be OK.

The girl's mother did not want to speak with reporters Monday.
