A driver who was pulled out of Manhattan's Hudson River Thursday morning drove her car into the water in a possible suicide attempt, NBCNewYork.com reported Thursday afternoon.

The woman was rescued and hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation, NBC New York said. She was not physically injured from the incident.

Initially, NBC New York reported that a vehicle went into the river after an elderly driver lost control, plowing off the Henry Hudson Parkway at about 10 a.m. The station later clarified that the woman, who was a 42-year-old New Jersey resident, had driven the wrong way on the West Side Highway ramp. A witness said she drove through a park, collided into a guard rail, and went into the river.

According to NBC New York, police said she then climbed out of the car and yelled that she had made a mistake and needed help. She left a suicide note behind, they said.

FDNY officials threw a life ring to her and an officer jumped in to pull her out, according to CBS New York.

“We didn’t get any information from the victim herself,” Deputy Fire Chief Dan Donoghue said, reported CBS New York. “She was quite confused, really didn’t know what was going on.”

The car has been pulled out of the river. An investigation is ongoing.
