Teacher on FBI 10 Most Wanted list held in Nicaragua over child porn

    View more videos at: http://nbcwashington.com.

By Pat Collins and Matthew Stabley, NBCWashington.com

One of the FBI's Ten Most Wanted fugitives -- Eric Justin Toth, a former D.C. teacher accused of producing and possessing child pornography -- was detained by police in Nicaragua, sources said.

Toth was found over the weekend. He had rented a room in a small town near Managua, was using an assumed name and had a fake passport.

Nicaraguan National Police Chief Aminta Granera said he would be deported immediately because he was in the country illegally, the Associated Press reported.

Toth taught third grade at Beauvoir Elementary School on the grounds of the Washington National Cathedral.

On June 12, 2008, Beauvoir sent a letter to parents saying that a teacher was found in possession of a school-owned camera with inappropriate pictures of a boy. Sources said that pictures of at least three other boys being touched in inappropriate ways were on a thumb drive.

At least one of the boys photographed is believed to be a Beauvoir student. According to police, Toth secretly recorded video of a young boy in a school bathroom.

    Read more stories at NBCWashington.com

Toth was terminated and escorted off campus and has not been seen in the D.C. area since that day. When he went on the run, he changed his name and his look, authorities said.

    Beauvoir released the following statement:

"We were informed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office (Department of Justice) that former teacher Eric Toth has been arrested.

We commend the work of the Office of the U.S. Attorney and the FBI for their ongoing efforts to apprehend Mr. Toth. They have been tenacious and resolute in their quest to bring this case to justice."

FBI agents tracked Toth to his parents’ home in Madison, Wis. Then in August 2008, his car was found in a parking garage at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

A note in the car indicated that Toth was contemplating suicide and that his body would be found in a nearby lake, sources said. But investigators believed that was a ruse, police said, and no body was found.

Toth was indicted on child pornography charges in December 2008.

In June 2009, agents received a tip Toth was living and working at a homeless shelter in Phoenix. But when they got there, he was gone.

He is also believed to have traveled to Virginia, Illinois and Indiana.

Toth first entered Nicaragua on Oct. 24 and left Jan. 27, Granera said. He returned on Feb. 12 and that's when Nicaraguan police began keeping a close watch, the AP reported.

    Granera said he resisted arrest.

Toth has been described as a computer “expert” and is believed to have an above-average understanding of the Internet and Internet security. According to the FBI, he has the ability to blend in to various socio-economic classes.

Toth worked at Beauvoir for three years. He was known to tutor and babysit Beauvoir students, sources said. He also allegedly spent nights in the homes of young boys.

During their search, the FBI warned Toth could try to get a job as a tutor both for money and for new victims.

The FBI said it put Toth on the Ten Most Wanted list in April 2012 because there were no reliable clues as to his whereabouts and because his Internet skills and alleged penchant for grooming children made him especially dangerous.

Toth is originally from Hammond, Ind., and is a graduate of Purdue University.

Tracking 'John Doe': Investigators hunt child pornography's Public Enemy No. 1

    View more videos at: http://nbcwashington.com.

    By Erika Gonzalez, NBCWashington.com

A suspect known only as "John Doe" is believed to have produced one of the most widely viewed series of child porn ever, but authorities have only one image of him.

"Once that image is taken of the child and the abuse that's occurring, it's on the Internet forever,” Child Exploitation Investigation Unit Chief Patrick Redling said.

Investigators with the Department of Homeland Security's Cyber Crimes Center have been after the man for more than a decade. The group based in Fairfax County works with global law enforcement allies to capture child predators anywhere.

"You can't work this crime alone,” said Ian Quinn, head of the HIS Cyber Crimes Center. “You need your international pa

rtners in order to even conduct these investigations.”

Detectives navigate through chat rooms and websites where child pornography is traded and then use state-of-the-art technology to zero in on the smallest of clues.

“We look for items, maybe it could be the plug on the wall that helps us identify that it's in North America,” Redling said.

    More news from NBCWashington.com

In 2010, Homeland Security arrested 912 child predators. That increased to 1,335 in 2011 and 1,655 in 2012.

Among several hundred arrests this year was Letha Mae Montemayor, who was arrested in California in January as part of Operation Sunflower. Detectives say she’s John Doe's counterpart.

The arrest warrant for John Doe is out of California, but Investigators say he could be anywhere in the country or the world.

Anyone with information about this case should call 866-347-2423 or visit www.ICE.gov/tips. Tips may be reported anonymously.

Priest jailed for 8 years after 5,000 child porn images found in church office

    By Reuters

A Roman Catholic priest who pleaded guilty last year to federal child pornography charges was sentenced on Wednesday to eight years in prison.

Bartley Sorensen, a 63-year-old former pastor of St. John Fisher Church outside Pittsburgh, Pa., pleaded guilty in May to receiving and possessing thousands of sexually explicit images of exploited children.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Sorensen was arrested in December 2011 after a parish employee who had undergone training to identify sexual predators saw him viewing child pornography on his computer and alerted authorities.

Investigators searched Sorensen's church office, where they found 5,000 images on three CDs as well as additional photos and videos.

The images included young boys either posing naked or engaged in sexual activity with other prepubescent males or adult males, according to affidavits.

U.S. District Judge Alan Bloch sentenced Sorensen to serve 97 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. He also ordered the suspended priest to pay a $25,000 fine.

Cops: Florida computer programmer suspected of soliciting dozens of girls online

    Lake County Sheriff's Office

Justin Slavinski was arrested in Florida after allegedly soliciting a law-enforcement officer posing as a 14-year-old South Carolina girl.

    By James Eng, NBC News

Authorities in Florida say a man arrested in an undercover child porn sting may have tried to lure as many as 40 girls he met online to have sex with him.

A search of Justin Slavinski’s computer turned up numerous photographs depicting child porn, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

At a press conference Tuesday in Orlando, Florida investigators appealed for possible victims to come forward.

“Cases of this nature are always disturbing, but I find this one particularly heinous,” said Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Gerald Bailey.  “I urge anyone with information about this investigation to contact FDLE Orlando Regional Operations Center.”

Slavinski, 32, of Apopka, Fla., was arrested on Thursday on warrants out of South Carolina alleging soliciting a minor via the Internet to engage in sexual activity, transmission of materials harmful to a minor, and lewd and lascivious behavior. He was being held in the Lake County Jail in Tavares, Fla., pending extradition to South Carolina.

Slavinski works as a computer programmer at a hospice in Tavares, authorities said.

He came under investigation in South Carolina during an undercover probe of child porn on the Internet, said Carrie Cuthbertson, a spokeswoman for the Georgetown County (S.C.) Sheriff’s Office.  A warrant was issued for him after he solicited a law-enforcement officer posing as a 14-year-old girl on a social-networking site in March, Cuthbertson said.

Undated photo of Justin Slavin that Florida law-enforcement officials say he sent of himself over the Internet.

Slavinski is believed to have sent more than 27,000 electronic messages, including obscene pictures, to minors since 2005, Florida investigators said.

“Agents have developed information that Slavinski has been in contact with as many as 40 young females throughout Florida over the Internet. FDLE is conducting an investigation to see if any of these girls are the victims of a crime.  Additional charges are anticipated,” authorities said in a press release.

Florida officials have so far found three children — two 14-year-olds and a 17-year-old girl — in Central Florida who have received pornographic images or other obscene material from Slavinski, FDLE spokeswoman Susie Murphy said, The Orlando Sentinel reported.

Another undated photo that Florida law-enforcement officials say Justin Slavinski sent of himself over the Internet.

Investigators also found videos of Slavinski performing a sex act on himself and lewd photos, as well as child porn, on his seized computers and external hard drives, Murphy said, according to the Sentinel.

It’s not known if Slavinski actually met any of the minors he allegedly communicated with online.

“There’s no timeline on Florida charges but we do anticipate charges forthcoming,” FDLE spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger told NBC News.

'Jane Doe' sought in production of child porn videos

    ICE / AP

A woman sought by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in an investigation into child pornography videos.

    By NBC News staff

Federal agents are looking for the public’s help in identifying a woman wanted for her alleged involvement in the production of child pornography. They are hoping her identification can lead to the rescue of at least two children.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

A "Jane Doe" arrest warrant was issued for the suspect in federal court in the District of Columbia this week.

The woman is believed to be involved in pornographic videos featuring herself and an unidentified man engaging in sexual contact with two children, one thought to be 5 to 7 years old and the other 3 to 5 years old, according to a news release from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Watch the Top Videos on NBCNews.com

“Jane Doe” is described by federal agents as a Caucasian female, 25 to 35 years old, with a medium build, dark brown hair and blue eyes, with a large mole on the back of her left thigh.

Although her whereabouts are unknown, investigators believe she lives somewhere in the United States.

Agents in Los Angles discovered the videos while investigating an unrelated child pornography case, according to the news release.

That material was submitted to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the national clearinghouse for child sexual exploitation material. The center, according to ICE, has not yet identified or rescued the child victims.

Homeland Security Investigations, a division of ICE, is requesting that anyone with information about “Jane Doe” contact the agency immediately through the ICE tip line, 866-347-2423, or online at www.ice.gov/tips/.

Guilty plea: Child rapist was accused of giving girls 'special juice' before assaults

    NBCPhiladelphia.com

Barry McOwen was accused of drugging and raping girls as young as 6 years old.

By Kelly Bayliss and Dan Stamm, NBCPhiladelphia.com

A Pennsylvania man pleaded guilty Tuesday to various child sex abuse charges, putting a surprising end to his trial on charges that he drugged and raped three young girls and posted images of the acts on the Internet.

    Follow @msnbc_us

Barry McOwen, 67, was charged with 651 total counts including multiple rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, sexual abuse of children, endangering the welfare of children, aggravated indecent assault, corruption of minors, invasion of privacy and drug violation charges.

He wound up taking the stand in court Tuesday -- the second day of the trial -- to plead guilty to some of those charges, including one count of child rape, three counts of indecent assault, four counts of creating child pornography and one count of dissemination of child porn, McOwen's lawyer George Yacoubian Jr. said.

The charges add up to 50 1/2 to 100 years in prison, Yacoubian said.

Read the original report at NBCPhiladelphia.com

He said McOwen pleaded guilty to spare himself even harsher punishment while also sparing family members from having to testify in the trial.

When McOwen was arrested about a year ago, authorities said that he used both allergy and prescription medications, which he referred to as his “special juice” to drug the girls, who were left in his care, before he sexually assaulted them.

"All the times I loved touching her and fondling her and the best part is she has no clue," McOwen allegedly said in one particular chat, according to a criminal complaint.

All of the victims were between six and 10 years old.

According to investigators, McOwen took pictures and videos of the incidents and shared them with others over the Internet.

Watch US News crime videos on msnbc.com

He often used Internet chats to share his horrific acts. The criminal complaint mentions one chat obtained by authorities in which McOwen allegedly told someone else, "I want to rape any pre-teen so bad."

McOwen also referred to his "sleep assaults" in many online conversations.

Investigators say the assaults took place over the course of five years -- between January 2006 and June 2011.

The investigation into McOwen began when authorities were made aware of child porn trading between McOwen and another individual, thanks to an investigation in Washington state. He was arrested in mid-June 2011.

Pediatrician admits possessing more than 100,000 child porn images, videos

Dr. Todd Parrilla, a Connecticut pediatrician, has pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.

    By NBCConnecticut.com

A Connecticut pediatrician has admitted to possessing more than 100,000 child porn images and videos.

    Follow @msnbc_us

Todd Parrilla, 48, pleaded guilty in Hartford Federal Court Monday.

Federal authorities began an investigation into Parrilla in July 2011, after a law enforcement officer in Kansas City, Mo., downloaded 104 images of child pornography from a directory on an internet file-sharing program maintained by Parrilla, according to prosecutors.

"This is a heinous crime," said David Fein, U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut. "That it was committed by a pediatrician, whose profession is committed to the well-being of children, makes it especially disturbing."

For more information go to NBCConnecticut.com

Parrilla was arrested in August 2011. FBI agents seized two computers and three detachable hard drives from Parrilla's home. Analysis of the computers and hard drives revealed more than 100,000 pictures and more than 10,000 videos depicting child pornography, according to prosecutors.

Parrilla was working as a pediatrician at the time of his arrest.

He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison when he is sentenced Oct. 24.

New Jersey child porn sweep brings 27 arrests, authorities say

    By Brian Thompson, NBCNewYork.com

More than two dozen people, including a township official, were arrested in a sweeping child porn investigation in New Jersey, officials said Tuesday.

    Follow @msnbc_us

The 27 arrested include a public works director in Morristown. Most of the suspects were charged with possession of child pornography; two were charged with distribution.

See the original story at NBCNewYork.com

"These people who create the demand for these images allow this industry to exist," State Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said.

Officials say one of the men arrested lived in a home connected to a child-care facility.

Authorities say the investigation began in January. The first suspect was arrested March 1. Authorities say the 23-year-old man lived next to a child daycare center.

Another suspect allegedly took pornographic photos while sexually assaulting a child, officials said. Yet another was downloading pornographic images when detectives got a search warrant.

Detectives say they traced digital fingerprints from the images as they passed through cyberspace.

The arrests took place in 20 New Jersey towns. It wasn't known if any of the suspects had lawyers.
