California man busted in grocery bathroom with porn, cocaine and small child

By Andrew Rafferty, Staff Writer, NBC News

A very eventful trip to a Safeway grocery store ended with a California man's arrest after police say they found him in a bathroom with porn, drugs, and a child.

Police in El Cerrito, Calif. were responding to a shoplifting report early Sunday morning when alerted that a man had been spotted in the women's bathroom with a small child, a pornographic magazine and the heavy smell of smoke.

The 32-year-old El Sobrante, Calif. man was found by police in the men's bathroom, where he admitted to having been in the women's bathroom where he smoked a marijuana cigarette laced with cocaine, according to the incident report. Officers determined the man was under the influence of a controlled substance and arrested him.

The Californian also admitted to stealing a bottle of soda from the Safeway.

A young girl originally discovered the drug and porn-filled binge when she entered the women's bathroom. The girl told her mother, who alerted store employees.

Police just happened to already be on scene after responding to a complaint about a woman who had stolen batteries from the grocery store

The whereabouts of the child with him are unknown, according to NBCBayArea.com.

Police arrested the unidentified man on suspicion of theft, drug possession, possessing of drug paraphernalia and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Five-time wing-eating champ, 'El Wingador,' faces cocaine charges

By Vignesh Ramachandran, Staff Writer, NBC News

    Matt Rourke / AP

In this Feb. 4, 2011 photo, Bill "El Wingador" Simmons, left, embraces the winner of that year's Wing Bowl in Philadelphia, who won by a margin of a single wing. Simmons was reportedly indicted on cocaine charges this week.

A New Jersey man known as "El Wingador" for his championship titles in competitive wing-eating has been formally indicted this week on cocaine charges, local media reported.

Bill "El Wingador" Simmons was charged with multiple counts of possession and distribution of cocaine, the South Jersey Times reported. Simmons is known for his participation in a Philadelphia chicken wing eating contest known as the "Wing Bowl," organized each year before the Super Bowl by a local sports radio station.

Simmons, a 50-year-old Woodbury, N.J., resident, had been arrested last June and authorities recovered $8,000 worth of cocaine and $4,000 of cash, The Associated Press reported. Police told the AP they also found more evidence at two homes connected to the wing-eating champ.

A five-time winner, Simmons last won the Wing Bowl in 2005 for eating 162 chicken wings, according to the AP.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

The Wing Bowl has become a sort of tradition in Philadelphia on the Friday preceding each Super Bowl, since its founding by a local 94WIP radio host in 1993.

Last year, the eating competition attracted 29 contestants and over 20,000 fans, according to the event site. This year's 21st competition was held Friday at Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center, in advance of Super Bowl Sunday.

Cocaine, police dogs help 4th-grader win science fair

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

An ounce of cocaine doesn’t usually come with a blue ribbon, even in Miami.

That didn't stop Emma Bartelt, 10, from winning first prize in the science competition at Coral Gables Preparatory Academy with the help of three drug-sniffing hounds and 28 grams of the illicit white powder, all provided by the Miami-Dade Police Narcotics Bureau, according to the Miami Herald.

She also earned an honorable mention at the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Elementary Science Fair on Saturday, according to the paper.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

The Herald reported that the scientific-minded fourth-grader received help on her “Drug Sniffing Dogs” project from her dad, Detective Douglas Bartelt. The three contraband-seeking chows included a springer spaniel named Roger; a chocolate lab, Franky; and a spaniel, Levi, according to the Herald.

A spokesman for the school district told the Herald that science fair rules do not explicitly prohibit use of cocaine in projects. Bartelt’s dad handled all the cocaine for the project, according to the Herald, which involved timing how long it took the dogs to find the cocaine in a room.

“It was kind of my idea, because I wanted to do my dad’s job,” Bartelt said of her award-winning experiment, which took place at police facilities.

In a statement, a school district spokesman told the Herald there was nothing wrong with Bartelt’s experiment – even if the only white powder at science fairs is usually baking soda for papier-mache volcanoes.

“The student's science project involved a very unusual set of circumstances, including having a parent who is a well-respected police detective with experience in training dogs that sniff for illegal substances,” the statement read, according to the Herald. “From our understanding, the parent was the only person involved in working directly with the dogs and the hidden substances, which took place at a police training facility.”

I can't decide if this was cool or horrifying. And for a science fair project, isn't the idea to do the experiment yourself?

Florida mailman accused of delivering cocaine on mail route

    By NBC News staff

A postal employee was arrested in Orlando, Fla., on charges he was delivering cocaine while on his mail route, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Robert Hunt Jr., 24, was arrested Thursday following an investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service that began last week.

According to the Sentinel, inspectors at an Orlando processing and distribution center found four parcels suspected of containing drugs.

Three of the parcels did not have a specific apartment number, only street addresses. A narcotics K-9 alerted investigators the packages contained drugs, the newspaper reported, adding that the cocaine had been shipped from Puerto Rico to Orlando.

On Sept. 7, authorities watched Hunt as he drove on his carrier route to an apartment complex in Orlando, where he began delivering mail to the boxes.

A car pulled up, and Hunt took the four packages to the men inside, Hector Roman-Diaz and Ernesto Rodriguez-Jimenez. According to the newspaper, he was then handed $800 by Rodriguez-Jimenez.

All three men were arrested and remain jailed.

Cocaine shipment through Newark leads to 3 arrests in Spain, officials say

    By Jim Gold, NBC News

A cocaine shipment spotted by customs officers in Newark, N.J., helped lead to the arrest of three people in Barcelona, Spain, U.S. officials said Friday.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Special agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), along with the Spanish Guardia Civil, said they arrested Oleksii Stepanets, a Ukrainian national; Eduard Medvedev, a Russian national; and Edgar Palma Bofill, a Spanish national.

Customs and Border Patrol officers at Newark Liberty International Airport intercepted a shipment of pulleys containing approximately 2.23 kilograms of cocaine on Aug. 21, ICE officials said. The shipment originated in Costa Rica and arrived in Newark on a commercial aircraft, they said. The shipment’s manifest said it was auto parts destined for an auto shop in Barcelona.

HSI Newark agents coordinated with agents in Madrid to assist the Spanish Guardia Civil in the arrests, officials said.

Besides the arrests, police seized a total of 2.99 kilograms of cocaine and “precursor chemicals” used to process the drug, officials said.

The arrests were linked to a previous seizure of 10 kilograms of cocaine at the Newark airport, officials said.

The total wholesale value of the cocaine is over $500,000, they said.

"This cooperation with foreign governments represents HSI's broad footprint that extends beyond our border," said Andrew McLees, special agent in charge of HSI Newark.

The investigation was the latest in a series of drug-smuggling interceptions reported by ICE. Among others, which yielded larger drug seizures:

    • Two U.S. citizens were arrested and 1,048 kilograms of cocaine with a street value of $72 million were seized Aug. 6 from a boat towing a vessel off the southern coast of Puerto Rico.
    • Two U.S. citizens were arrested and 450 kilograms of cocaine with a street value of $10 million were seized July 31 from a suspicious 30-foot fiberglass boat with two outboard engines sinking off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico.
    • Six Dominican Republic nationals aboard a 25-foot unmarked fiberglass boat heading toward Puerto Rico were arrested and 330 kilograms and 1 kilogram of heroin with an estimated street value of $8 million were seized in early June.

Authorities search for grandmother, boyfriend after toddler ingests cocaine

    Follow @NBCNewsUS
By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

Georgia authorities are searching for a toddler's grandmother and her boyfriend after the 13-month-old was found to have ingested cocaine.

The toddler's mom brought him to Piedmont Newnan Hospital on Saturday, near his grandmother's Palmetto, Ga., home. He was transferred and admitted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where doctors confirmed he had cocaine in his system, Palmetto Police Sgt. Lee Gragg told NBC News.

Police were told the boy, whose name was not released, ingested the cocaine at the home where his grandmother lives with her boyfriend. Warrants for Ebony Daniel, 34, and her boyfriend, Charlie Martin, 22, were issued Monday.

Police have not had any contact with Daniel, but on Tuesday, Martin called the police sergeant.

"He called me and stated he wished to turn himself in, but as of yet, that has not happened," Gragg said Tuesday afternoon. "I told him that was good, it'd work out best for him and everyone else if he did that."

Martin did not provide any information on the whereabouts of his girlfriend, the toddler's grandmother.

The toddler's 17-year-old mother is considered a witness and hasn't been charged, Gragg said.

Toxicology reports to determine how much cocaine the boy ingested have not been returned yet, but the child had been released from the hospital after spending two nights there, investigators said Monday. He is expected to survive.

Police searched Daniel and Martin's apartment Saturday, trying to piece together what happened.

"According to witnesses, the cocaine was open and available on a table inside the house," Gragg said.

Daniel and Martin face charges of possession of cocaine, cruelty to children in the first degree, and reckless conduct, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
