Two children killed in Minnesota field trip landslide

    Jim Mone / AP

Rescue personnel gather near an entrance to Lilydale Regional Park above the Mississippi River during a suspension of search efforts to find a fourth child missing after a landslide swept over a group of children on a fourth grade field trip Wednesday, May 22, 2013, in St. Paul, Minn.

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

Authorities recovered the body of a Minnesota child who went missing after a gravel slide swept several members of an elementary school class on a school fossil-hunting trip into a pit, bringing the death toll in the incident to two.

Crews recovered the boy’s body on Thursday after bad weather briefly let up, St. Paul Assistant Fire Chief Jim Smith said, according to NBC News affiliate KARE.

The boy’s family had been notified, Smith said.

The fourth-graders from a St. Louis Park elementary school were hiking in Lilydale Regional Park on Wednesday when a steep slope soaked by rain gave way, authorities have said. Two trapped children were dug out by firefighters who clawed away gravel with their hands and shovels, they said.

“It appears they were walking along and the ground, after the rain we’ve had, was so soft and it gave way and they fell into what became a hole and the earth came on top of them,” St. Paul Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard said at a news conference, according to KARE.

    Scott Takushi / AP

An emergency worker attends to a person on a stretcher, being evacuated out of a rockslide site by helicopter, on the West Side of St. Paul, Wednesday, May 22, 2013.

One of the children pulled from the pit later died, and has not yet been identified by authorities. One child injured in the slide has been released from the hospital and another remains in serious condition, officials said on Thursday.

“The slide had fallen down on top of them," Zaccard said. “One was partially buried, one was completely buried.”

The search for the missing student was suspended overnight as rescuers battled worsening conditions.

“Water is flowing right into the hole making it extremely dangerous for rescuers to work anymore,” Zaccard said. “We are working with our partners in Parks and Public Works to make the scene safe for what’s become a recovery effort for what might be a fourth victim.”

A man who identified himself as the missing child’s uncle said the student “liked geology,” according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.

“Thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the children and to our first responders who continue to deal with the situation as it develops,” said St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman.

Classes went on at Peter Hobart Elementary, where the students were from, on Thursday, district officials told KARE

“This is an incredibly sad time for our schools and our entire school community. Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and everyone touched by today’s accident,” St. Louis Park Public Schools Superintendent Debra Bowers said in a statement. “We, like everyone else, want to understand how this tragedy occurred, but today we ask for your continued thoughts and prayers for everyone involved.”

23-year-old skier found dead in creek near Oregon resort

    Don Ryan / AP

The body of a skier was found Sunday near Mount Hood, seen in this Dec. 14, 2009 photo.

By Ian Johnston, Staff Writer, NBC News

The body of a 23-year-old man who skied off into the night after he apparently drank alcohol in a hut on Oregon’s Mount Hood was found submerged in a creek late Sunday, officials said.

Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said it was “sad to report” the body had been found at about 7:15 p.m. local time (10:15 p.m. ET) Sunday near Highway 26 west of the Ski Bowl Resort.

“Searchers learned that a group of experienced skiers left the boundary of Ski Bowl's west side last night. The group gathered at a hut that is just outside the boundary,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

“Investigators learned from a member of the group that alcohol was being consumed and the subject appeared intoxicated,” it said. “The subject decided to head down the mountain alone but became disorientated when he left.”

“He had been in contact with a member of the group via cell phone but was still unable to find his way,” it added.

In a previous statement, the sheriff’s office said the man was last seen at 9 p.m. local time Saturday by campers at Mirror Lake and was reported missing at 11 a.m. Sunday.

It said the man “had left the group he was with to ski down the mountain. The group made plans to meet up later but the subject did not show up.”

The campers “had only been in contact with him from across the lake.  The campers attempted to direct him to their location but he never arrived,” the earlier statement said.

Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue, Mountain Wave Search and Rescue, American Medical Response Reach and Treat Team, and the Oregon National Guard were involved in the search along with a helicopter.

Three arrested in connection with deadly Denver bar fire

    AP / Ed Andrieski

Police work at Fero's Bar and Grill in Denver on Oct. 17, where the bodies of a man and four woman were discovered after firefighters extinguished a fire at the bar early Wednesday morning.

By Andrew Mach, Staff Writer, NBC News

Police in Denver arrested three suspects late Wednesday in connection with the bar fire that was started to cover up the murders of five people.

Denver police and federal agents arrested Dexter Lewis, 22, Joseph Hill, 27, and Lynell Hill, 24, around 11 p.m. Wednesday, Denver Police Commander Ron Saunier told reporters at a press conference Thursday.

Saunier said the motive in setting fire to Fero’s Bar & Grill was robbery.

“They came in there, it wound up being a robbery,” Saunier said. “The arson was set to try to cover up the crime scene.”

The Denver medical examiner identified the victims as Young Fero, 63, the bar’s owner, Daria M. Pohl, 22, Kellene Fallon, 45, Ross Richter, 29, and Tereasa Beesley, 45.

Saunier said detectives believe the victims were killed before the fire started. He also said there were obvious signs of trauma to the victims’ bodies.

Saunier said they do not expect to make any more arrests, but they will continue to investigate and execute search warrants. “At this time we believe we have everybody identified that’s been involved in this,” he said.

The three men are being held on various charges, including five counts of first-degree murder, felony murder, aggravated robbery, and arson. More charges are likely to follow.

Cops: Denver bar set on fire to cover five murders

Denver police believe a bar was set fire to hide the killings of the five people found inside. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

    By NBC News staff

Updated at 11:11 a.m.: Five people found dead inside a torched Denver bar were killed before the building was set on fire, officials said Wednesday.

Denver police Det. John White confirmed the deaths of four women and one man at Fero's Bar & Grill.

“It appears there was some trauma to the bodies – it also appears to be arson,” White told reporters at a morning briefing, the Denver Post reported.

Police and fire officials said they are investigating the incident as an arson-homicide, the Denver Post reported.

Denver Police Cmdr. Ron Saunier said detectives believe the victims were killed before the fire started and the blaze was set to mask the homicide, 9news.com reported.

"It's going to be a long, drawn-out investigation at this point," Saunier said, according to the Post.

The names of the victims were not immediately released, and autopsies were pending. Police do not believe anyone else was in the bar at the time.

Teen lesbian couple found shot in Texas park

Police are investigating the shooting of two teenage girls in a small Texas community along the Gulf of Mexico. KRIS reporter Lindsay Curtis has the story.

By Miranda Leitsinger, Staff Writer, NBC News

Two teenage girls in a relationship were found with gunshot wounds to the head in a south Texas park, with one of them dying from her injuries, media reports say. Police were searching for their assailants.

Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Christine Chapa, 18, were found in knee-deep grass in a nature area in Portland by a couple Saturday, said Portland Police Chief Randy Wright, who confirmed to msnbc.com details first reported by the Corpus Christi Caller Times.

    Follow @mimileitsinger

Olgin, originally from Ingleside but recently living in Corpus Christi, died; Chapa, of Sinton, was rushed to a hospital where she had surgery and was in serious but stable condition on Sunday, local NBC affiliate kristv.com reported. Wright said Chapa was still in the hospital on Monday.

Friends told kristv.com that the girls had been together five months. Wright said he didn’t have any information about their relationship, noting that “we understood from their friends that they were (in a romantic relationship). I know from … Mollie’s parents that they were very close.”

When asked if police had been able to determine if the girls' sexuality played any role in the shootings, Wright told msnbc.com: “That’s always something that we’re looking for, but as of this point, we have not been able to establish that that had anything to do with the attack.”

He said they had been in communication with Chapa. He noted all indications were that “third parties” were involved in the assault.

    Follow @msnbc_us

“If we had a name, you know, we’d be having a different conversation right now. But we have not been able to gather enough information to identify a suspect yet,” he said. “It appears as if … this was not just a random attack but that’s something that we really have to develop over time.”

Wright said police had recovered a bullet casing from a large-caliber gun at the scene, but they haven’t found the weapon. A resident living nearby reported hearing two loud bangs Friday before midnight but believed they were from firecrackers, the newspaper said.

The park, more of nature area with some parts overgrown and no lights, was generally frequented by visitors during the day. It is located along a bluff overlooking a bay, Wright said, with some homes situated nearby.

“We’re not really sure how they got to the point that they were found,” he said of the girls. “It is a scenic overlook with a wooden deck and there is a place at the edge of the deck where you can actually go down a very steep incline into a grassy area that leads down to the shoreline and that’s where they found.”

Friends of the girls gathered at a local high school on Sunday. Olgin's roommate, Samantha Garrett, told kristv.com that the fun-loving couple hadn’t gotten any negative responses to their relationship and could not think of why anyone would want to harm them.

The crime rate is low in Portland, a bedroom community of Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico, Wright said. The last homicide occurred two years ago.

Mississippi prison on lockdown after riot; 1 dead, 19 hurt

By NBC News and wire services

JACKSON, Miss. -- Officials say a prison for illegal immigrants in Mississippi was on lockdown after a riot that began on Sunday left one guard dead and at least 19 people injured.

All inmates were secured in their housing units by 2:45 a.m. Monday, nearly 12 hours after the disturbance began at the Adams County Correctional Center in southwest Mississippi, Mike Machak, a prison spokesman, said in a statement, according to WDSU-TV, an NBC News affiliate in New Orleans.

    Follow @msnbc_us

Officials haven't released the identity of the slain guard.

Machak said 16 other employees were treated and released from a hospital for various injuries. Three inmates were injured.

The 2,567-bed prison near Natchez houses adult male illegal immigrants, most of whom re-entered the U.S. after being deported, Emilee Beach, a prison spokeswoman, told The Associated Press. The facility is owned and operated by Nashville-based Corrections Corp. of America, WDSU-TV reported, which houses about 75,000 offenders and detainees in more than 60 facilities nationwide.

Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesman Chris Burke said the facility holds low-security inmates.

Watch the Top Videos on msnbc.com

Sunday's riot is not the first time CCA prisons have had disturbances.

In 2004, inmates at another CCA prison in Mississippi, the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility, set fire to mattresses, clothing and a portable toilet. No injuries were reported. The company announced after that disturbance that it would add about 25 guards at the Tallahatchie County facility.

In Idaho, the high level of violence at a CCA-run prison has prompted federal lawsuits, public scrutiny and increased state oversight. In 2010, Vermont inmates being held at a CCA prison in Tennessee were subdued with chemical grenades after refusing to return to their cells.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

NYPD: Girl, 13, shot dead; wounded mom says shooter is her son

    By Katherine Creag, NBC News

A 13-year-old girl was killed and her mother was seriously wounded in a shooting at a housing project in New York City's Harlem early Tuesday, police said, according to NBC New York.

The mother, 44, who was listed in critical condition in a local hospital, told police that the suspect was her 28-year-old son. The man was shot by police during a confrontation outside the building.

The suspect was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. No officers were injured in the exchange.

Police said they responded at 3:27 a.m. Tuesday after receiving a call of a female shot. They found the 13-year-old victim dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head.

The girl's mother was taken to Harlem Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds.

A sergeant and his partner saw the gunman running from the apartment building area and confronted him. A chase ensued and the suspect fired at officers, police said. Officers shot back, striking the suspect in the legs and torso.

The suspect was taken into custody and brought to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in serious condition. His weapon was recovered at the scene.

3 dead after woman tells husband she's leaving him at Cracker Barrel in Ohio

Three people were killed after a woman called 911 from a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Ohio, saying her husband was upset because she told him she was leaving him. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

BROOKLYN, Ohio -- An Ohio father opened fire on his family inside a Cracker Barrel restaurant Thursday evening, killing his daughter on her birthday and his wife, who told him she was leaving him, police said. Officers shot and killed the 51-year-old man after he walked outside the restaurant and refused to surrender.

    Follow @msnbc_us

Police say Kevin Allen fatally shot his 42-year-old wife, Katherina Allen, and their 10-year-old Kerri Allen, and also wounded the couple's other 10-year-old daughter, Kayla, who was in critical condition on Friday. Police records showed that it was Kerri’s birthday on Thursday, The Associated Press reported.

Authorities said Katherina Allen had called 911 from inside the restaurant, saying her husband was upset because she told him she was leaving him. He left the restaurant and was circling the parking lot, she told police. She also told police she was fearful he may become violent.

"I'm having some spouse problems," Katherina Allen told the dispatcher in the 911 call.

At the end of the call, Allen said, "He's here and the police are here, too. I have to ..." before she stops speaking.

The dispatcher replied, "Wait in the lobby for the officers. Do not go outside. Let them talk to him, OK? Ma'am?" The call then ends in a jumble of noise.

Witnesses told police Kevin Allen came into the restaurant with a long gun and "selectively" fired on his family.

Officers heard gunshots when they arrived and saw Allen, a resident of Strongsville, leaving the restaurant with a gun. Police Chief Scott Mielke said officers shot Allen when he refused to surrender. He died at the scene.

Jody McIntosh, a waitress at the restaurant, told The Cleveland Plain Dealer she was home when a co-worker called her, saying someone "had shot up the place."

Cracker Barrel spokeswoman Julie K. Davis said the restaurant will be closed until an investigation is complete.

"This appears to be the result of a domestic dispute between two guests and no Cracker Barrel employees were involved," Davis said in an email, according to the AP.

Woman found dead with 3 kids was 'good mom'

    By msnbc news services

A woman found dead with her three children at a ranch in Missouri was a "very good mom" who was always caring for her daughters, neighbors say.

The woman and the girls -- Christine Adewunmi, 37, Lauren, 8, Samantha, 6, and Kate, 3 -- were found Saturday afternoon near a SUV at the Blue Springs Ranch campground in Bourbon, Mo., media reports say. Each victim was shot once, and a handgun was located nearby.

    Follow @msnbc_us

Evidence at the scene suggests that it was a murder-suicide, though the investigation was ongoing, Crawford County Sheriff Randy Martin told msnbc.com.

The highway patrol was still trying to track down some leads, such as where the handgun came from, he said.

“We’re pretty confident that this was a murder suicide … we’re not looking for anybody else right now,” he said.

When asked if authorities had an indication of what the motive could have been, Martin said: “No, not that I can give out at this point.”

Leonard Adewunmi had reported his family missing about 6 p.m. Friday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Neighbor Lisa Stemler, 46, said she saw Christine Adewunmi Friday afternoon, and they waved to one another.

“That smile on her face ...,” Stemler, 46, told the newspaper. “I have her face plastered in my mind.”

Stemler said Adewunmi was a stay-at-home mother who could be seen shuttling her daughters to the Girl Scouts and sports practices.

“Those kids were her life,” Stemler said, noting that she didn't know the husband as well: “None of us really saw him a whole lot.”

Leonard Adewunmi, 42, is listed on LinkedIn as a managing partner of CRI Commercial Properties, which says it owns and manages several apartment and commercial units in the St. Louis area, the Post-Dispatch reported.

Msnbc.com's Miranda Leitsinger contributed to this report.
