'House of horrors': Abortion doctor set to go on trial in 8 deaths

Dr. Kermit Gosnell in an undated photo released by the Philadelphia District Attorney's office.

By Maryclaire Dale, The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA -- Three years after drug agents searching a suspected "pill mill" at a West Philadelphia clinic instead found a medical "house of horrors," an abortion doctor is going on trial on eight counts of murder.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 72, the clinic owner, is charged with killing a pregnant refugee and seven viable newborns. He also faces a separate federal trial on prescription drug charges.

Gosnell, who has pleaded not guilty, saw himself as a medical missionary in the blighted neighborhood where he worked and lived for 40 years. His Women's Medical Center treated the poor, immigrants, teens and women with late-stage pregnancies who could not get abortions elsewhere.

"I feel in the long term I will be vindicated," Gosnell told the Philadelphia Daily News in a March 2010 interview, a month after the federal drug raid. "I aspire to perfection, certainly for my patients."

But some of those patients were left with infections, perforated bowels and other injuries after barbaric abortions were performed by untrained, unlicensed staff, according to numerous lawsuits and a lengthy 2011 grand jury report. And 41-year-old Karnamaya Mongar lost her life there in 2009.

Jury selection starts Monday in the death penalty case. All but one of the nine clinic workers arrested with Gosnell have pleaded guilty, three of them to third-degree murder, which carries a potential 20- to 40-year prison sentence.

Unlicensed doctor Steven Massof of Pittsburgh told the grand jury that he used scissors to snip the spines of more than 100 babies born alive. He worked for Gosnell for a few hundred dollars a week. He pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in the deaths of two babies allegedly stabbed by Gosnell while Massof assisted with the abortions.

    Gag order
Gosnell's third wife, Pearl, a cosmetologist, pleaded guilty to performing an illegal, late-term abortion and other charges. She does not have to testify, but other co-defendants have said they would.

It's not clear if Gosnell plans to testify, because a gag order has been issued in the case. But it's possible, given his posture in the Daily News interview.

"Many times people have not been able to fully pay me for my services," Gosnell said. "As a principle, I have not refused to provide them care."

Yet he made millions over the years, both from abortions and a thriving side practice where staffers allegedly dispensed his pre-signed prescriptions for OxyContin, Percocet and other highly addictive painkillers.

Related federal drug charges await Gosnell after the murder trial, which is expected to last several weeks. Opening statements are scheduled for March 14.

It's not clear if Pennsylvania jurors have ever been asked to send a man of Gosnell's age or occupation to death row. Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams called Gosnell's macabre medical clinic — where agents found fetal body parts in glass jars and staff refrigerators, and patient rooms filthy and blood-stained — a "house of horrors."

"Dr. Gosnell is never going to get the death penalty," defense attorney Jack McMahon said early on, noting his client's age and the cost of protracted capital cases.

The gag order now prevents McMahon from commenting about the case. But he met with Gosnell at the courthouse on Thursday, with prosecutors and the trial judge nearby, in what some viewed as late-hour plea discussions.

Mongar's family has a civil suit pending over her death. The 4-foot-11 woman from Bhutan — who did not speak English — died after allegedly receiving lethal doses of sedatives and painkillers from Gosnell's untrained workers.

She and her husband and three children had survived 20 years in refugee camps before settling in rural Virginia. She was referred to Gosnell's clinic to seek a second-term abortion.

Medical technician Sherry West, during her plea to third-degree murder and other charges, admitted she may have administered drugs to Mongar while Gosnell was off-site.

"She's very sorry about the death of that young lady," defense lawyer Michael Wallace said after her plea. "She got caught up in a series of things that probably she did not realize the significance of."

Cops: Elderly patient fatally shoots doctor in clinic

By Jason Kandel, Vikki Vargas and Angie Crouch, NBCLosAngeles.com
A doctor was fatally shot and the suspected gunman was in custody on Monday after a shooting at a doctor's office in Newport Beach, police said.
The shooting happened at 2:45 p.m. in a second-floor patient room at 520 Superior Ave., said Kathy Lowe, of the the Newport Beach Police Department.

Lowe said police received a call from someone reporting hearing up to seven shots fired in the medical office. Police arrived and found both the gunman and the shooting victim in the office.

The gunman, a man in his 70s whose name was not immediately released, was arrested without a struggle. An employee who works in the building said the gunman had a scheduled appointment with the slain doctor.

Police did not identify the person who was shot, but witnesses told NBC4 that the man was possibly a urologist.

Because the building is so new, witnesses initially thought the shooting was the sound of construction.

"I thought it was construction, like a nail gun," said Kristin Crotty, an employee at the medical facility.

The doctor has a wife and two children. His family declined to comment late Monday.

    By Jane Yamamoto, NBCLosAngeles.com

A California doctor was arrested Tuesday on a warrant accusing him of possessing about 1,000 images of child pornography on a computer he used at work.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Dr. Pete Thomas, of Coastline Podiatry in Santa Ana, Orange County, turned himself in to a judge when an arrest warrant was issued for him, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

The judge sent Thomas to police, where he surrendered himself and was booked on one count of felony possession of child pornography, Bertagna said. He was out on $50,000 bail Tuesday night.

Thomas, 58, of Long Beach, came under suspicion when a computer technician spotted the questionable material on his computer while installing new printing software on the office's system, Bertagna said.

Some images allegedly depict children from 7 years old to their early teens engaging in sex acts with other minors or adults, Bertagna said.

Police don't believe Thomas had any contact with the children in the photos.

NYC doctor accused of manslaughter over patients' overdose deaths

    By The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- A New York City doctor who wrote prescriptions for a man who killed four people in a pharmacy robbery was hit Thursday with manslaughter charges that accuse him of causing the overdose deaths of two patients.

Dr. Stan Li already had been accused of prescribing prescription drugs to addicts.

Li prescribed more than 500 pills to a 21-year-old man in the five weeks leading up the discovery of his body in a parked car in Queens in 2010, authorities said.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

The cause of death was acute intoxication caused by a combination of Xanax and oxycodone.

    'Do no harm'
Authorities said they believe it's the first time a physician has been charged in New York with manslaughter in an overdose death.

"Dr. Li flouted the fundamental principle in medicine -- first, do no harm," Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget Brennan said in a statement announcing the indictment.

Li, of Hamilton, N.J., appeared in court Thursday.

The 58-year-old Li has previously pleaded not guilty to peddling prescriptions to addicts and drug dealers from a Queens weekend clinic where he saw as many as 120 patients a day, moonlighting from his full-time job as an anesthesiologist at a New Jersey hospital.

One of Li's patients, David Laffer, shot and killed two employees and two customers while holding up a Long Island pharmacy for painkillers in June 2011. Authorities have said that Li provided 24 prescriptions filled by Laffer.

Laffer is serving a life sentence for murder.

LA plastic surgeon accused of secretly videotaping disrobed patients

Plastic surgeon Lance Wyatt is accused of secretly filming his female patients disrobing at his office in Beverly Hills, Calif. KNBC's Beverly White reports.

By Samantha Tata and Patrick Healy, NBCLosAngeles.com

A Los Angeles doctor was arrested Thursday on suspicion of secretly filming at least two disrobed patients and committing sexual battery against another patient, according to the Medical Board of California.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Lance Everett Wyatt, M.D., has been charged with two counts each of unlawful filming of another and unlawful viewing of another; and one count each of sexual battery on a patient and unlawful use of force and violence on another, officials said in a statement released Thursday.

    All counts are misdeamanors.

Wyatt's office was unavailable for comment Thursday afternoon.

The investigation into Wyatt began about a year ago after the Medical Board received a complaint that the doctor secretly filmed a patient while she was naked during a follow-up visit, officials said.

Police say a woman brought them a camera she found in the doctor's office in the East Medical Tower adjacent to Cedars Sinai Medical Center.

Then the Medical Board, LAPD and the Los Angeles City Attorney discovered another alleged victim.

The rules are clear for doctors to photograph patients, according to NBC4's Medical Editor, Dr. Bruce Hensel.

"There are reasons for plastic surgeons to take photos, before or after, or for computer images to show you how you'll look," says Dr. Hensel, "but in those cases, you need to give consent, or it's not appropriate, and it's not legal."

The 42-year-old Wyatt -- who specializes in plastic and reconstructive surgery -- boasts an accomplished practice on his website, citing a Harvard University education, awards from UCLA and the National Institute of Health and several patient testimonials.

"I was really impressed with his personality. He's extremely friendly, treats you like a friend, not a patient," one woman said in a testimonial. "He goes out of his way to call you back whenever you need it."

Wyatt was being held on $50,000 bail. If convicted, he could face two years in county jail.
