Pit bulls maul Southern California woman

    By Dan Whitcomb, Reuters

LOS ANGELES - A 63-year-old woman was fatally mauled by a pack of pit bulls while walking near her home in Southern California on Thursday and police were searching for the four dogs, law enforcement officials said.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

A driver called police Thursday morning to report that four dogs were mauling the woman by the side of a road in a remote high desert area near Palmdale, California, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Captain Mike Parker said.

When a sheriff's deputy arrived on the scene a few minutes later, he found the woman being attacked by one dog, which circled and moved aggressively toward him as he approached, Parker said.

The deputy fired twice at the animal before it ran into the desert. There was no sign of the other three dogs, Parker said.

The victim, who was not immediately identified, died in an ambulance while being taken to a hospital, said Los Angeles County Care and Control spokeswoman Evelina Villa.

Authorities were searching for the tan-colored dogs and issued warnings to residents of Palmdale, about 65 miles east of Los Angeles.

"Sheriffs deputies are knocking on doors in the neighborhood, patrolling and warning people in the area, but we have not picked up any leads since the deputy fired the shots," Parker said.

Homicide detectives were on the scene and Parker said the dog's owners could face charges.

Members of the woman's family had told police that she walked daily in her neighborhood, he said.

Two toddlers critically injured in attack by aunt's Rottweilers

    By NBC News staff

Two toddlers in Ohio were critically injured in an attack by their aunt’s three Rottweilers, according to local reports.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Richland County Dog Warden Dave Jordan said immediately following the Thursday attack family members took the dogs to a vet in Ashland, Ohio to be euthanized, the Mansfield News Journal reported.

The dogs will be tested for rabies by the Richland Health Department.

The toddlers -- Kaitlyn O’Brien, 22 months, and Reagan O’Brien, 3 -- were flown to an Akron hospital, which said Friday it couldn’t release any information about them, the News Journal reported.

Richland County Sheriff’s Deputy Joe Lewis told the newspaper that the girls’ aunt, Sandra Lynn Kinstle, went on a walk with her two nieces and three Rottweilers -- a male and two females.

Reagan reportedly ran ahead, and the male Rottweiler, which weighed about 180 pounds, chased and attacked her. The other two dogs followed and then turned on Kaitlyn.

The aunt then reportedly covered the girls with her body to stop the dogs and was injured. She was listed in fair condition at a Mansfield hospital Thursday.

Jordan said the owners reported having no previous problems with the dogs.

    No charges were immediately filed.

When will people ever learn not to own dogs such as Pittbulls and Rotweilers. Pittbulls were responsible for 71% of fatal dog attacks in 2011, though they make up only 5% of the toatal dog population, and Rotweilers were responsible for 13% of the fatalities. I am sick of hearing statements like "it …

Chicago man mauled to death by his own pit bull

By Andrew Mach, Staff Writer, NBC News

An autopsy has found that a Chicago man was mauled to death earlier this week by his pet pit bull.

Chicago police said the autopsy shows that 44-year-old Charles Hagerman was attacked and killed by at least one of his two pit bulls. Hagerman’s wife, Charlotte Williams, found him unresponsive with one of the pit bulls on top of him in their apartment around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Williams ran outside and called police on her cell phone. When police arrived, Hagerman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hagerman reportedly suffered multiple injuries from the dog attack, including a fatal neck injury, according to the autopsy. The death was ruled accidental, officials from the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

The family’s landlord, Muhammad Alameen, told the Chicago Sun-Times he arrived home at about 8:50 p.m. Wednesday to find police everywhere.

“They wouldn’t let me in my building,” said Alameen, adding that the dog owner's family moved in across from him a few months ago.

“His wife was just sitting there in shock, just staring off into space,” Alameen said. “She said, ‘The dog killed my husband.’”

The Chicago Animal Care and Control office removed both dogs from the home.

The family had owned the three-and-a-half-year-old pit bull, Scrappy, since he was a puppy, Charlotte Williams’s son, Daryl Williams, told the Chicago Sun-Times. They took in a second pit bull, Scrappy’s son, Rocco, a year and a half ago.

Daryl said the dogs were familiar and friendly with all three members of the household, which is what made the attack so puzzling. He said the incident has traumatized his mother, leaving her inconsolable and unable to sleep.

“Nobody knows,” Daryl said of how and why the pit bull attacked. “The dogs slept at the foot of their bed. He played with my nieces and nephews. We can’t figure this out.”

8-month-old boy dies after dog attack near San Diego

    NBCSanDiego.com

Officers restrain one of three dogs seized after a fatal attack on an 8-month-old infant in Lemon Grove, Calif., Thursday evening.

By NBC News and msnbc.com staff

An 8-month-old infant boy was mauled and killed by at least one dog Thursday evening in a San Diego suburb, according to the county Sheriff's Department.

    Follow @msnbc_us

Up to three dogs may have been involved in the attack, which happened just before 5 p.m. on the 3000 block of West Street in Lemon Grove, east of downtown San Diego, NBCSanDiego.com reported.

The circumstances of the attack were unclear, but deputies arrived within four minutes of getting the call, San Diego sheriff's homicide Lt. Larry Nesbit told The San Diego Union-Tribune.

    Read the story at NBCSanDiego.com

The child was pronounced dead at Rady's Children Hospital, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Authorities confirmed that three pit bulls were hauled away from the scene by Animal Control officers, NBCSanDiego.com reported.

"They were aggressive," Nesbit told NBCSanDiego.com. "They were restrained by animal control officers with the tools they have."

It's not clear if the boy's family owned the dogs or if the attack happened at their home.

"I can’t even imagine losing a child and to know that a family pet did it," next-door neighbor Regina Marlow told NBCSanDiego.com. "That’s horrific. I can’t even imagine what the family would be going through."

Neighbor Deirdra Canty said the dogs had been known to attack cats before.

"I don’t think that a dog like a pit bull, rottweiler, large dogs should be around little infants," Canty said.

Msnbc.com staff contributed to this report from Monica Garske and Lauren Steussy at NBCSanDiego.com.

Coroner's 'nightmare': Dog dismembers 2-month-old child

By Bruce Smith, The Associated Press

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. -- A 2-month-old child was killed and dismembered by a dog in his family's South Carolina home as his father slept, authorities said Friday.

    Follow @msnbc_us

Aiden McGrew's mother called 911 when she got home around 11 a.m. and discovered the boy's leg was severed by a retriever-Labrador mix the family had taken into the home a few weeks earlier, Dorchester County deputies said.

The boy died at the hospital a short time later, Coroner Chris Nisbet said in a news release.

Nisbet said the boy was bitten and dismembered, but he refused to answer additional questions about the infant's injuries. An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday.

"Today is one of the saddest days in my 20+ years of being in the Dorchester County Coroner's Office as I report to all of you one of the worst deaths I have ever handled," Nisbet wrote in his email to the media, which had the subject line "Today's Nightmare."

McGrew's mother was taking the family's 7-year-old child to the doctor. The father was sleeping in a bedroom with a 3-year-old child, while the baby was in a swing outside that room, Dorchester County Sheriff L.C. Knight said.

Investigators are still trying to sort out how the attack unfolded. The father was being questioned by deputies Friday afternoon, Knight said.

"It's terrible. I don't want to go into details about exactly what happened because the investigation is still ongoing," Knight said. "It was a real bad scene."

The two other children in the home have been taken into protective custody, Knight said. Prosecutors are also following the case and the sheriff expects all the investigators will meet next week to discuss if any charges should be filed.

A woman answering a number listed for the home refused to talk about what happened and told a reporter to not call her back.

The child had to be screaming, did the father sleep through that? The 3 year old too? Why was a 2month old left alone in a swing? If it was sleeping, it should have been in a crib, not left in a swing. There are a lot of questions that need to be answered. Something isn't adding up.
