Florida boy, 3, fatally shoots himself with uncle's gun

    By The Associated Press

Authorities say a 3-year-old Florida boy has died after shooting himself with a gun he found in his uncle's backpack.

The shooting happened Tuesday night in a bedroom Jadarrius Speights shared with his uncle at an apartment complex in Tampa. Authorities say the uncle, 29-year-old Jeffrey D. Walker, has been charged with culpable negligence.

It wasn't immediately clear whether Walker had an attorney. His phone number was not listed and jail records didn't give a lawyer for him.

Police say he has a concealed weapons permit.

Hillsborough County sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter says the uncle was not in the room when the shooting happened, but the child's parents were there. The boy was taken to a hospital where he died.

Last week, a 5-year-old Kentucky boy who received a .22-caliber rifle as a gift accidentally shot and killed his 2-year-old sister, according to state police.

Six-year-old critical after being shot by her 13 year old brother

    NBC 6 South Florida

A 6-year-old girl was shot by her 13-year-old brother in Oakland Park according to investigators.

    By Gilma Avalos, NBCMiami.com

A six-year-old Florida girl was in critical condition Sunday after being shot by her 13-year-old brother Saturday night in a city just north of Fort Lauderdale.

Neighbors said the two children were playing a game when the shooting occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday in Oakland Park, a city in Broward Country.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

"They were playing hide and go seek. I don't know how it went down but he shot his sister," said neighbor Peter Milano, who saw a frantic woman he thought was the children's aunt running down the block.

"She came up to me 'Is she ok? Is she ok?' At the time I didn't know what she was talking about," Milano said.

It's not clear if authorities will pursue criminal charges in the case. Detectives believe the shooting was accidental but were still trying to determine exactly how the teen got access to the gun. The children were home alone at the time of the incident, said Dani Moschella, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Homicide detectives spent time talking with the 13-year-old. Neighbors said he drew pictures for investigators as he described what happened.

"The kid's probably, well, how could you feel, you just shot your sister?" Milano said.

Though detectives are specially trained to deal with the most sensitive situations, Moschella said the fact that two children are involved made this job that much more difficult.

"It is very difficult when dealing with children, specifically children who've been through a very traumatic situation," she said. "This family will never be the same after tonight, no matter how it ends up."

The 6-year-old is in critical condition at Broward Health Medical Center.

When are authorities going to start charging the parents in cases like this with manslaughter for failing to secure their guns so that children can not access them? Just like the stupid, ignorant parents of the five-year-old boy who killed his toddler sister this past week.

Father cleaning shotgun shoots 10-year-old son in the head in N.C.

A 10-year-old boy was accidentally shot and killed by his father who was wiping down a shotgun, North Carolina police say. WMBF's Monique Blair reports.

    By NBC News staff

A father who was cleaning his shotgun accidentally shot his 10-year-old son to death at their home in North Carolina.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Christopher Stanlane was wiping the gun down Sunday afternoon when he shot the boy in the head, Capt. Anthony Thompson of the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office told NBC affiliate WMBF.

Stanlane dropped his gun and rushed his 8-year-old daughter to another room while his wife called 911.

The son, Christopher Jr., was pronounced dead by paramedics at the house in the town of Fairmont.

“Most people think that guns are what kill people, and it’s not,” said Sgt. Eric Gavaghan, another county sheriff’s official, who teaches gun safety classes. “The people and their inexperience, their lack of training, that’s what hurts other people with firearms.”

Reports: Father accidentally shoots, kills 10-month-old son in front of family

By John Newland, Staff Writer, NBC News

A 10-month-old boy was shot and killed by his father Thursday in an apparent accident at a Nashville, Tenn., hotel, local media reported.

Two police detectives from the Hermitage Precinct were close to the hotel when the call went out and made it to the scene within about three minutes but were unable to resuscitate the child, NBC affiliate WSMV-TV Channel 4 reported.

The child's mother Jacquelin Bass, 28, and the couple's other sons, aged 3 and 2, were in the room when the gun went off, the station said.

The baby was shot once in the chest as his father, Larry Bass, 30, handled the semi-automatic handgun, the Nashville Tennessean reported.

NBC News was unable to independently confirm the accounts early Friday.

Both news outlets reported that the family, from Texas, was at the Extended Stay America hotel near Nashville International Airport when the incident happened. Larry Bass was in town to work on construction of the Music City Center, a 1.2-million-square foot convention center.

The newspaper said the family had checked in on Jan. 29.

Ten-month-old Adam Bass would have had turned 1 in May, the Tennessean reported, quoting police spokesman Don Aaron as saying that the family was "very, very distraught over what's happened" and that "the police department does not believe this was an intentional act."

Attempts to reach the police department were unsuccessful early Friday. WSMV said a police investigation was continuing.

Investigation after teen points gun at classmate in video

New Mexico police are investigating a video posted on Facebook that shows a teen pointing a gun at a 16-year-old autistic boy and threatening to shoot him if he didn't kiss his shoes. KOB's Jill Galus reports.

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

A disturbing video of teenagers pointing a gun at one of their peers, taunting him, has led to a police investigation in New Mexico.

The video, in which a reportedly autistic boy is cornered in a bedroom while another kid holds a weapon up to his face, shows at least two other teens laughing and yelling.

One, referring to the gun, says "It's f***ing loaded, b*tch," then props his foot up on a bed. He tells the boy, "Kiss my shoes." The other says, "dude, you better f***ing kiss his shoe."

NBC affiliate KOB.com reported the video was recorded in January, but only recently posted onto Facebook. The father of the boy who was being taunted shared the video, which was taken down from Facebook, with the news station; the faces of all the teens have now been blurred to protect their identities.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

The 16-year-old boy who was being terrorized in the video was autistic, his father told KOB.com.

Calls from NBC to the Los Alamos police department were not immediately returned, but the school district confirmed the incident took place at a house in Los Alamos, off of school grounds.

"There were not any arrests," Los Alamos Superintendent Gene Schmidt said. "Two detectives did come onto our campus to interview potential witnesses. From what I understand, later on, a citation was issued."

KOB.com reported that the teen with the gun was charged with aggravated assault, but it was not clear if the other teens faced charges or if anyone was physically harmed.

The students all attended Los Alamos High School, Schmidt said.

He couldn't comment on disciplinary action in the case, but said, "We do have an active protocol when the school is concerned that bullying may or may not be taking place. We work very actively to set up a safety plan for those people involved. ... Our administrative team was aware of this investigation, and a parallel universe was developed in which safety plans for students at the high school was developed and deployed."

Boy, 5, shot in his bedroom in NYC

    By Lori Bordonaro, NBCNewYork.com

Police are investigating how a 5-year-old boy was shot in the shoulder in his home in The Bronx, New York City, Friday, authorities said.

The boy's mother and father were in their bedroom in Morrisania when they heard a pop noise shortly after 10:30 a.m., police said.

They rushed to their 5-year-old son's room and found him shot.

Police said it was not clear if the boy accidentally shot himself or if his 11-year-old brother accidentally shot him.

The father drove the boy to nearby Lincoln Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

    The investigation was continuing.

Woman shot by oven while trying to cook waffles

By M. Alex Johnson, staff writer, NBC News

An 18-year-old Florida woman was only slightly injured this week when she was shot by her friend's oven, police said.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Aalaya Walker was visiting a friend in St. Petersburg Monday when they decided they wanted some late-night waffles, The Tampa Bay Times reported. So Walker began preheating the oven — unaware that her friend, JJ Sandy, 25, was storing a magazine from his .45-caliber Glock 21 in the oven.

The magazine exploded about 9 p.m. ET, spraying casing fragments at high speed and striking Walker. She managed to pick some of the fragments out of her leg and chest and then took a bus to the hospital, where she was treated and released.

Sandy told police he'd stored the gun in a drawer but had stored the magazine in the oven. Four rounds were in the 13-capacity magazine, he said.

Gun and ammunition references indicate that the .45-caliber bullets commonly used in Glocks can explode at temperatures as low as 280 degrees — or even lower if they've been exposed to heat for a long time, which can degrades the structure.

Sandy "stated that he does not have a temperature gauge on the oven so he estimates the temperature based on how far the knob is turned," according to the police report, which was obtained by the Times. "I observed that the inside of the oven was damaged."

In a memorable 2007 episode, the popular science TV show "Mythbusters" found in several experiments that bullets can explode "once the oven was hot enough."

"Without a gun barrel to contain and direct the propellant gases, the bullets did not develop enough speed to pierce the glass or steel portions of the oven. The shell casings actually caused more damage than the bullets," it found — essentially reproducing what police said happened Monday.

Sandy wasn't charged because he had a proper concealed weapons permit, The Tampa Tribune reported.

After Obama SOTU address, gun dealer struggles to keep up with demand

President Barack Obama made gun control one of the biggest priorities in his State of the Union address Tuesday night. CNBC's Hampton Pearson reports that the political debate is driving sales at a shop in Chantilly, Va.

By Hampton Pierson, CNBC Washington Reporter
CHANTILLLY, Va. -- The day after President Barack Obama's emotional plea in his State of the Union message for a "vote" on new gun control measures, it is business as usual at the Blue Ridge Arsenal. The post-Sandy Hook boom in gun sales and even ammunition continues.

A special weeklong examination of gun violence, gun ownership and gun legislation. NBC News journalists will report across "NBC Nightly News," "TODAY," MSNBC, CNBC, NBCNews.com, and more. The conversation will also extend across NBC News and MSNBC's social media platforms using the hashtag #GunsInUSA.

Earl Curtis, Blue Ridge's president and owner, said law abiding gun owners are buying weapons that they fear might be banned; at the top of the list the AR-15 rifle and the Glock 22 handgun.

However, he's having trouble getting guns to sell.

"Usually we would get anywhere from 10 to 20 guns a week as far as ARs," he said. "Now we get about one or probably one a week if we're lucky."

The phenomenon of busy gun shops is born out by record FBI data on background checks required for gun purchases, the best barometer of gun sales which increased to record levels over the last two months.

Leading up to and after the Dec. 14 tragedy in Newtown, Conn., checks were hitting all-time highs. Background checks inDecember topped 2.78 million, an all-time record, and January came in at just under 2.5 million—-the second highest month ever and a million more than any previous January.

Complete coverage of 'Flashpoint: Guns in America,' an NBC News special report

Last fall, before the Newtown tragedy, Smith & Wesson reported a record $136 million in sales, a 48 percent increase from a year ago. Sturm Ruger's sales topped $118 million, a 50 percent increase.

"I see a win-win for the stocks, even if they did come up with more restrictive legislation … I don't see them completely banning weapons or completely banning the ability to buy them and again lighting that much of a fire for people who already own guns to buy more of them," said Randy Cloud, president of Cloud Capital LLC, which holds shares in gun makers. "An unsettled political turmoil may ultimately be better for SWHC and RGR than if there were no political threats."
However, manufactures will have to find the balance between figuring out how long the current increased demand will last and the political headwinds, Cloud said. No one wants to get stuck with excess inventory of potentially banned weapons or accessories.
CNBC's Stephanie Dhue contributed to this report

'Too young to leave us': Hundreds mourn slain Chicago teen at funeral

The first lady joined hundreds of mourners on Saturday at the funeral of Hadiya Pendleton, 15, who was killed at a park near her Chicago high school. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

    By Alexandria Fisher, NBCChicago.com

CHICAGO -- Hadiya Pendleton was remembered by many Saturday as a smiling young girl full of laughter and love.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

First lady Michelle Obama and hundreds of supporters attended a funeral for the slain teen Saturday morning at the Greater Harvest Baptist Church.

The service began shortly after 11 a.m. to a packed room.

"Hadiya was too young to leave us but not too young to make a mark," Pendleton's pastor Courtney Maxwell said at the start of the service.

The service was filled with uplifting testimonials and a few words on gun violence in the area.

One of Pendleton's close friends happily remembered their last moment together.

"Her smile lit up a room," she said. "The last thing I saw before they put her in that ambulance was her smiling and from heaven above I know that each day she's smiling down on all of us."

Hadiya's mother, Cleopatra Pendleton, thanked everyone for the kind words that were spoken about her daughter.

"I can stand up here and say my baby girl was good," she said. "But for all you to say she's good ... that's something different."

Cleopatra Pendleton also thanked her family for the support she received since her daughter passed.

"You don't  know how hard this really is," she said. "And for those of you that do know, I'm sorry. I'm sorry."

Though the family strived to keep the focus on Pendleton the  first lady's visit drew attention, and lots of security, to the funeral and shed light on the ongoing issue of gun violence.

Pendleton's godfather Damon Stewart, wearing purple accents to honor her with her favorite color, said he thinks her passing will help raise awareness for those who have lost their lives to violence.

"She is a representative to not only the people of Chicago but to the people of this nation who have lost their lives," he said.

One of her friends said he was being realistic about the tragedy because Pendleton "always kept it real."

"This is life," he said. "This is Chicago."

A letter from President Barack Obama offering his condolences to her parents, Nathaniel and Cleopatra Pendleton, was printed on the back of the program.

"We will continue to work as hard as we can to end this senseless violence," the letter read.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Rev. Jesse Jackson were also in attendance.

Pendleton was killed last Tuesday at Kenwood Park on the city's South Side days after she performed at some of President Barack Obama's recent inauguration festivities. She was shot to death blocks from her school and about a mile from the president's and first lady's Chicago home.

Hundreds flocked to pay their respects to the 15-year-old girl and emotions were high.

The church quickly filled to maximum capacity before the service began and many people were turned away, though a large group remains gathered outside.

Some of Pendleton's classmates were emotional when they couldn't get in and cried outside the church.

One man was arrested after a fight broke out among the line of mourners stretching down South State Street.

Michelle Obama to attend slain Chicago teen Hadiya Pendleton's funeral

    View more videos at: http://nbcchicago.com.

    By Lisa Balde, NBCChicago.com

Michelle Obama will travel to Chicago on Saturday and attend the funeral of a 15-year-old girl gunned down last week in Chicago, the White House confirmed Friday.

The first lady was not expected to speak, sources told NBC Chicago.

Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will also make the trip from Washington, D.C., to attend the service for Hadiya Pendleton at the Calahan Funeral Home on the 7000 block of South Halsted Street.

"That's a step in the right direction," the Rev. Jesse Jackson said Thursday. "Their coming give us a sense that somebody at the highest levels of government cares, and that is a big deal."

Pendleton was killed last Tuesday at Kenwood Park on the city's South Side days after she performed at some of President Barack Obama's recent inauguration festivities.

Two days after a teen who performed at President Obama's inauguration weekend was gunned down, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is set to yank 200 cops from desk jobs and make them fight crime on the streets. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

She was shot to death blocks from her school and about a mile from the president's and first lady's Chicago home.

"After all, this is in her neighborhood. This is less than a mile from the First Lady's house, and her children must walk these same streets, and so I'm sure that Michelle is acutely sensitive to just how close this is to her own family," Jackson said.

Friends of Hadiya Pendleton share their memories of the Chicago teen shot days after performing at some of President Obama's recent inauguration festivities.

    Read more from NBCChicago.com

Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said he believes Michelle Obama's visit "is rightfully bringing attention to the problems that every urban center in this country is experiencing every single day."

The reward leading to Pendleton's killer stands at $40,000.

A petition was started asking that Obama attend the funeral. Unconfirmed reports earlier this week said Michelle Obama had considered attending.

The Pendleton family's pastor confirmed the president called Hadiya's parents to offer his sympathies.

"We thank him for that, and if he does come, that's fine," Pastor Courtney Maxwell said. "If he doesn't, we know he sends his love."

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn also will attend the funeral, set for 9 a.m. Saturday at the Greater Harvest Baptist Church, at 5141 S. State St.

Cops: Texas couple fatally shot in argument over dog feces

    View more videos at: http://nbcdfw.com.

    By Frank Heinz, NBCDFW.com

A couple with four children were shot and killed in an argument over dog feces on Monday, police in Texas said.

Officers were called to a shooting at the Sable Ridge Apartments in Dallas at about 8 a.m. Monday.

When officers arrived, they found two people, later identified as 32-year-old Michelle Jackson and 31-year-old Jamie Stafford, dead at the scene from apparent gunshot wounds.  An infant inside the couple's apartment was not injured.

After talking with witnesses, police began searching for Chung Kim, a resident of the complex identified by residents as a man who lived in the unit below Stafford and Jackson and was seen leaving the complex after the shooting.

Police later located Kim in his black Lexus SUV nearby and took him into custody.

Investigators said the couple had been dumping dog feces on the patio and at the front door of Kim's apartment.

    Read more from NBCDFW.com

Police said Kim pulled out a gun and shot Jackson as she stood on her balcony. Police said Kim then went upstairs and into the couple's apartment and shot Stafford as he jumped off the balcony while trying to escape.

Police said Kim then stood over Stafford and shot him again.

Residents said they heard arguing followed by several gunshots.

"I heard about eight or nine gunshots just go off, ‘Bow, bow, bow,’ like three separate times,” said resident Michael Issa. “It was like, first there was two or three, then there was a pause for like 30 or 40 seconds and then there was another three or four shots, and there was a pause, and a couple more shots

"I waited for like three or four minutes and I ain't hear nothing. I came outside to smoke a cigarette and look upstairs and there's feet hanging over my head," he added.

A friend of the victim said there had been several arguments over pets and noise.

One neighbor, Yoland Washington, spoke of the couple's children, including the infant who was home at the time of the shooting.

"When they come home today, their mother and their father is gone. Little baby, they call the newborn Little Mama, Little Mama is not going to never know her parents,” said Washington.

Child protection officer Marissa Gonzales said they had taken temporary custody of a one-month-old child found unharmed inside the apartment and that three other children who were at school at the time of the shooting are now with relatives.

Keaton Fox, Greg Janda and Stefan Gorman, NBC5, contributed to this report.

'American Sniper' author Chris Kyle fatally shot at Texas gun range

A Marine allegedly turned his gun on two friends – including Chris Kyle, a celebrated Navy SEAL – at a gun range on Saturday. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

By Gil Aegerter and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

A former Navy SEAL who wrote "American Sniper," a best-selling book about his lethal career as a marksman in Iraq, was shot to death with another man at a gun range near Stephenville, Texas, on Saturday.

Chris Kyle, 38, and the other man were found dead at the shooting range of Rough Creek Lodge on Saturday afternoon, Texas Highway Patrol spokesman Lonny Haschel told KXAS.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

The gunman, identified as Eddie Ray Routh of Lancaster, Texas, was arrested after a brief pursuit, Trooper Haschel said. The other victim was named as Chad Littlefield, aged 35.

Routh, 25, was arraigned Saturday night on two counts of capital murder, said Haschel.

Officer Kyle Roberts at the Erath County Jail told the Associated Press that Routh arrived there Sunday morning and was being held on a combined $3 million bond. Roberts did not have information on whether Routh had a lawyer.

Capt. Jason Upshaw of the Erath County Sheriff's Office said Routh used a semi-automatic handgun, which authorities later found at his home, the Associated Press reported.

Routh is in the Marine Corps Individual Ready Reserve, a U.S. military official confirmed. As such, he is not active or drilling with a unit.

Routh's service record shows that he was an armorer with the rank of corporal and served from June 2006 to January 2010. He was deployed three times -- to Iraq, various locations in Europe and the Middle East, and to Haiti.

Kyle, a Texas native who grew up hunting, served four tours in Iraq with Navy SEAL Team 3. His shooting during battles in Ramadi and Fallujah became legendary, and insurgents nicknamed him the "Devil of Ramadi" and put a bounty on his head.

He was credited with 160 confirmed kills, including one in 2008 in which he said he fired from 2,100 yards away -- 1.2 miles.

The Star-Telegram described him as "America's deadliest sniper."

This photo provided by the Erath County Sheriff's Office shows Eddie Ray Routh. He was charged with murder in connection with a shooting at a central Texas gun range that killed former Navy SEAL and "American Sniper" author Chris Kyle and  Chad Littlefield, the Texas Department of Public Safety said Sunday Feb. 3.

Haschel said Routh is believed to have shot the victims at around 3:30 p.m. local time (4:30 p.m. ET) before leaving the shooting range and returning to his home in Lancaster in a Ford pickup truck. Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant said the truck belonged to Kyle.

Kyle and Littlefield had taken Routh to the range, said Travis Cox, the director of a nonprofit Kyle helped found. Littlefield was Kyle's neighbor and "workout buddy," Cox told The Associated Press on Sunday morning.

"What I know is Chris and a gentleman — great guy, I knew him well, Chad Littlefield — took a veteran out shooting who was struggling with PTSD to try to assist him, try to help him, try to, you know, give him a helping hand, and he turned the gun on both of them, killing them," Cox told the AP.

Kyle's nonprofit, FITCO Cares, provides at-home fitness equipment for emotionally and physically wounded veterans.

Rough Creek Lodge is a resort and conference center about 90 miles southwest of Dallas and 24 miles southeast of Stephenville in the Texas Hill Country. Lancaster is just south of Dallas.

In a February 2012 interview with NBC News, Kyle said he didn’t want to put the number of kills in the book but the publisher insisted.

Chris Kyle was credited with 160 kills during his time as a Navy SEAL marksman.

“If I could figure out the number of people I saved, that’s something I would brag about,” he told NBC News' Lester Holt.

After leaving the Navy, Kyle founded Craft International, which provides training to military, police, corporate and civilian clients, Reuters said.

"It just comes as a shock and it's staggering to think that after all Chris has been through, that this is how he meets his end, because there are so many ways he could have been killed" in Iraq, Scott McEwen, who co-wrote "American Sniper," told Reuters.

Kyle appeared on the NBC reality TV show "Stars Earn Stripes" last year.

Kyle was married with two children.

NBC News' Courtney Kube, Jim Miklaszewski and Mark Stevenson contributed to this report.

WFAA-TV (Channel 8) reported that Kyle was shot point-blank while helping another soldier who is recovering from post traumatic stress syndrome. The suspect was believed to be highly trained with military experience. http://crimeblog.dallasnews.com/2013/02/lancaster-police-arrest-man-in-connection …
