Mom on bus caught on cell phone video: 'I didn't toss my baby'

    View more videos at: http://nbcconnecticut.com.

    By Debra Bogstie, NBCConnecticut.com

A mother caught on cell phone video apparently throwing her baby across the aisle of a bus, prompting a police investigation, says she didn't do it.

"I didn't toss my baby. I set her down," said the woman when NBC Connecticut confronted her at her Hartford home.

The startling scene was caught on tape by a concerned passenger during a bus ride on Albany Avenue Wednesday morning. It's since gone viral with internet postings on YouTube, Facebook, and elsewhere.

The two minute video shows a woman screaming obscenities at another passenger, as her baby sits on her lap at times holding her little ears.

The woman repeatedly asks other passengers to take her child so she can fight the woman. "I will thrash you. Somebody grab my baby. I'm going to beat the... of you on this bus," she's heard saying in the video. Then, it gets worse.

The woman is seen throwing the baby across the aisle into the arms of another passenger. Then, she heads up front and gets into a fist fight.

    Read more stories on NBCConnecticut.com

The bus driver pulled over to the side of the road and opened the doors, according to CT Transit. As he called for help, the woman retrieved her baby and left the bus. So did the other passenger involved in the fight.

When NBC Connecticut arrived at her home Friday night, police and child welfare workers were inside talking to her. After they left, we knocked on the door and the woman answered.

When asked if she had any comment on the situation, the woman said, "No. Connecticut Transit, get the full video. I didn't toss my baby. Get the full video."

She then closed the door, only to open it once again.

"I never tossed my baby," she said. "Get the full video from Connecticut Transit. I didn't toss my baby. I set her down."

The video was so shocking that an NBC Connecticut viewer brought it to our attention. We asked Hartford police if they knew about it, and they launched an investigation.

Hartford police have not filed any charges in the case.

As part of their ongoing investigation, they're reviewing a second cell phone video from a different angle. The camera on board the bus was not working at the time of the incident, so there is no surveillance video available from CT Transit.

BB gun sparks scare, arrest near Obama motorcade

President Obama renewed his plea for gun control Monday on the heels of a "60 Minutes" interview featuring the families of Newtown.  NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

    By Stephanie O'Connell, NBCConnecticut.com

Police have taken a man into custody who was in possession of a BB gun while watching President Barack Obama's motorcade depart the University of Hartford on Monday.

According to police, the man was standing near the intersection of Charter Avenue and Cottage Grove Road in Bloomfield, Conn., while Obama's motorcade passed.

Officers said they noticed the man acting suspiciously and pacing back and forth before he pulled out what appeared to be rifle.

The man was aggressively taken into custody, and it was learned that what had appeared to be a rifle was actually a BB gun.

    More news from NBCConnecticut.com

The man has been charged. The exact charges and the suspect's name were not immediately available.

The man will be in court on Tuesday.

3 teens held over destruction of 100 gravestones in Jewish cemeteries

    By NBCConnecticut.com

Three teenagers have been arrested for allegedly destroying nearly 100 gravestones at Jewish cemeteries, police in Connecticut said. More than $20,000 worth of damage was caused during the attack.

Hartford Police, which started to investigate this case in mid-October, recently got a tip that three teens that live in the neighborhood were responsible and the arrests were made over the weekend.

Dozens of headstones are still toppled over at the Tower Avenue Jewish Cemeteries.

At first police investigated the case as a hate crime, but after talking to the teens, they said this was no longer the case.

Leonard Holtz, with Congregation Ados Israel, said the vandalism "basically attacked the defenseless and the emotions of those survivors."

"(The arrests) don't lessen the pain for people who have had their monuments desecrated," he added.

    Read more from NBCConnecticut.com

Holtz said visitors were still uneasy. “It has taken away the feeling that you can go here with peace of mind,” he said.

Hartford Police said that the suspects may have destroyed the gravestones while they were using it as a shortcut to a nearby park.

“It's a crime that inflicts pain and suffering on other families,” Holtz said.

'Just sickening': Vandals smash nearly 70 gravestones in Alabama cemetery

He said he wanted those responsible to be held accountable, and to understand the damage wasn’t just aesthetic.

“A cemetery should be a sacred place, holy ground, this should never happen,” Holtz added.

The names of the suspects were not released.

Connecticut toddler falls from roof while baby-sitter sleeps, police say

    By NBCConnecticut.com

Police in Hartford, Conn., have charged a 25-year-old babysitter with risk of injury after the 2-year-old boy in her care fell off a roof, according to police.

When Chantelle Turner was arraigned on Tuesday, she was ordered to have no contact with children.

Police said it appears that the boy opened a window at Turner's residence at 32 Mahl Ave. in Hartford, crawled onto a second-floor roof and fell off.

Hartford police responded to 1978 Main St., located around the corner about 400 feet away (see a map here), just before 5:30 p.m. ET on Monday and found the little boy crying and suffering from visible head injuries, police said.

It is not yet known if the boy walked the distance on his own or whether someone brought him there.

American Medical Response took the child to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a skull fracture and cranial bleeding, according to police.

Police said the child was supposed to be in Turner's care and she told officers she had fallen asleep.

Turner was charged with risk of injury to a minor and arraigned on Tuesday, where bond was set at $100,000.

The pendulum of justice has swung much too far against this babysitter. She did not harm the child. In fact, she's probably a decent babysitter. Report: Suspect in Conn. jeweler murder kills self

By msnbc.com staff and NBC News

A man suspected of killing a jeweler in the tony town of Westport, Conn., last month and stealing $300,000-worth of diamonds has killed himself in a Spanish prison, according to The Hartford Courant.

Andrew Robert Levene, 41, of West Haven had been arrested in Spain and charged with shooting and killing 65-year-old Yekutiel Zeevi at Zeevi’s office in a shopping center on Dec. 8, after pretending to buy several diamonds.

Levene fled the U.S. on a flight from Philadelphia to the Netherlands and then went on to Spain, authorities alleged.  He was arrested by Spanish national police on Monday, NBC News reported.

According to The Hartford Courant, a source said law enforcement officials in Connecticut were notified Thursday that the 41-year-old former Army Ranger had committed suicide. Authorities were trying to determine the cause of death.

Levene had training in the use of weapons, according to an affidavit and had family members in Connecticut and New York, NBCConnecticut.com reported.

Emergency crews responded to the school for a report of possible drowning on Wednesday afternoon and the victim, a male student, was transported to Connecticut Children's Medical Center.

The source said students saw the student at the bottom of the pool, the teacher jumped in and performed CPR.

Principal Matthew Ryan sent a letter home to parents saying a student had an accident at the school.

"The student was given assistance at the school and transported to the hospital. EHHS personnel responded and followed trained safety procedures," Ryan wrote. "The East Hartford Police Department and Emergency personnel were contacted and responded."

Occupy protesters in Cincinnati court Tuesday

    By msnbc.com staff

An Ohio judge Tuesday is hearing about 60 criminal trespassing charges filed by the City of Cincinnati against protesters who were arrested in recent months as part of the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations.

Hamilton County Municipal Judge Dwane Mallory is expected to hear the charges against everyone arrested, according to a report Tuesday on cincinnati.com.

“We were told the city prosecutors could take all day presenting witnesses and we may take all day tomorrow presenting our side,” Josh Spring, a member of the Occupy Cincinnati group, told the website.

About 30 Occupy Cincinnati members were in the court galley, wearing red fabric bands tied around their right biceps. Spring is also among those facing criminal trespassing charges, the website reported.

City may issue Occupy Albany permit

    By WNYT.com

The Albany, N.Y.,  Fire Department will be at Occupy Albany Tuesday afternoon.  If there no violations found, city officials are likely to issue a permit allowing the group to continue stay overnight in Academy Park.

The protesters have already agreed to reduce their tent encampment by two-thirds in exchange for a city permit. They had about 90 tents late last week, now they are down to 30.

Part of the compromise bans individual space heaters in tent city.

BofA workers told to be careful amid Occupy protests

    By msnbc.com staff

Bank of America employees are being told to be careful Tuesday as housing activists and Occupy protesters gear up to take over foreclosed homes and empty lots and help defend families facing eviction in at least 25 cities.

"Your safety is our primary concern, so do not engage with the protesters," said a bank memo issued Tuesday.

The move by activists is part of a bid to re-energize the grassroots movement and put the spotlight on the ongoing housing crisis.

"As ungrateful bailed-out banks continue to foreclose on American families, Occupy Wall Street takes fight to the ‘home front’," said a press release sent to Business Insider.

In response, bank officials reportedly sent out a memo telling their employees to be extra careful, and even referred to a specific story on occupyourhomes.org that features a Bank of America customer they're "researching."

Thanks to zerohedge.com for providing a copy of the memo.

Occupy Hartford protesters told to vacate

    By msnbc.com staff

Occupy protesters in Hartford, Conn., have until 6 p.m. Tuesday to leave their encampment or risk being arrested after the deadline passes.

"I don't anticipate any trouble, but I will take appropriate corrective action," Hartford Police Chief Daryl K. Roberts told the Hartford Courant.

Roberts said that Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra notified the campers of his decision early Tuesday morning through a written statement handed out by city employees, the Courant reported.

The decision to vacate the site was reportedly prompted by continuing reports of illegal activity, including drug use and a sexual assault last week.

Amanda Robinson told the Courant that she has been camping at the site since Oct. 24.  When asked what response the protesters might make to the deadline notice, Robinson said: "I'm sure we're going to make it interesting."
