There’s a rogue superhero on the loose in Hollywood.

Police are on the hunt for Spider-Man after the masked web-slinger snatched a paper bag filled with $6,000 in cash and credit card information from an employee of the Starlines Tour Bus company.

It happened Friday morning as the worker was leaving the firm’s Hollywood Boulevard headquarters, said Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Rich Galbaldon, a watch commander at the Hollywood Division.

Hoping their web-head didn’t make it too far, police have been rounding up other Spidey impersonators who were seen milling about in the area, which sits near the TCL Chinese Theatre, formerly Grauman's, a tourist mecca.

So far, no arrests have been made.

Other local superheroes -- among them Superman, Batman and Catwoman -- have said they would help the police in the search for the masked felon around the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Starline Tours is the oldest and largest sightseeing tour company in Los Angeles, according to its website. It offers tours of Hollywood, the city of LA, and tours of celebrity homes.

    John Shearer / AP, file

Police said they had not yet been in contact with Chris Brown.

By Marian Smith, Staff Writer, NBC News

Updated at 7:30 p.m. ET: Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown is being investigated following an alleged fight over a parking space in West Hollywood, police said early Monday.

Authorities responded to a call of a fight involving six males on Santa Monica Boulevard, the LA County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

"Deputies talked to witnesses who stated that Chris Brown and the victim were involved in an altercation over a parking space," the statement added. "The altercation allegedly led to Chris Brown punching the victim."

Brown had already left when officers arrived, police said.

The police say that according to witnesses, Brown punched R&B artist Frank Ocean in the fight. Steve Whitmore, the LA County Sheriff's spokesman, said that no charges have been filed against Brown yet, but that Ocean "is desirous of prosecution in this incident."

Police said they had not yet been in contact with Brown, and the singer's rep has not released a comment. No arrests have been made.

Alleged illegal dentist accused of kissing woman's buttocks

    Broward Sheriff's Office

John Collazos, 47, was arrested Monday and faces one count of practicing dental hygiene without an active license, according to a complaint affidavit.

    By Karen Franklin, NBCMiami.com

A Florida man accused of performing illegal dental work was arrested again after police said he had administered a shot for a woman's toothache and then kissed her buttocks.

John Collazos, 47, of Hollywood, was arrested Monday and faces one count of practicing dental hygiene without an active license, according to a complaint affidavit.

Hollywood Police said Collazos posed as a dentist and treated the woman, who paid him as much as $65 for his services in a Hollywood apartment.

Collazos put a paste in the woman's mouth to help alleviate pain from a toothache. After she continued to complain of pain, he told her she would need to pull her pants down to administer a shot, the affidavit said.

Clandestine dentist arrested in Miami after filing teen girl's teeth

Then, in a room fully equipped with dental equipment, the man touched her private area and kissed her buttocks, according to police.

The woman told police officers that Collazos did not answer her when she asked him why he touched her.

Collazos was previously arrested in September after Davie Police said he performed illegal dental work out of a warehouse.

"He was, for lack of a better term, preying on people whose immigration status may have been questionable and had no other place to go and he used that to his advantage to get these people into his business," Davie Police spokesman Dale Engle said.

Cops: At least 3 shot during Halloween celebrations in Hollywood

By Samantha Tata and Alex Calder, NBCLosAngeles.com

LOS ANGELES -- At least three people were shot during Halloween celebrations that became unruly in Hollywood late Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The shooting occurred shortly before 10 p.m. local time (1 a.m. ET) near the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Whitley Avenue, Los Angeles police Sgt. Andrew Chao told City News Service.

A 17-year-old boy was shot in the chest and leg, and taken to the hospital in critical condition, Chao told CNS. A 14-year-old boy was shot in the foot and a 25-year-old man was struck in the buttocks, Chao said. The pair was transported to the hospital.

It was not immediately clear whether the shooter or shooters were apprehended, though aerial footage of the scene showed at least two people being detained by LAPD officers.

    More stories from NBCLosAngeles.com

Officers were already deployed in the area due to Halloween celebrations. Unruly crowds began to form up and down Hollywood Boulevard throughout the night, and it appeared that as soon as officers stabilized one area, another area would erupt in violence. Early reports suggested revelers were fighting and throwing bottles.

Dozens of cops in riot gear started responding to Hollywood and Highland shortly after 10 p.m.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Largely-costumed crowds spilled into traffic, ran in between cars and confronted officers starting as early as 9:30 p.m.

A skirmish line of mounted officers was briefly stationed at the intersection of Hollywood and Wilcox. Throngs of officers on mounted patrol, bicycles and motorcycles descended on the area. Several LAFD crews were also on scene.

Halloween celebrations in Hollywood pale in comparison to those in adjacent West Hollywood, where some 400,000 people were expected to attend the annual Costume Carnaval.

Still, Hollywood has become an increasingly popular spot for Halloween revelers and hundreds lined the streets Wednesday night.

Russell Means, Indian activist and actor, dies at 72

    Joshua Lott / Reuters file

American Indian activist Russell Means, seen here at his Scottsdale, Ariz., home in October 2011, helped lead protests for Native American rights.

By NBC News staff and news services

Russell Means, the American Indian activist who helped lead the 1973 uprising at Wounded Knee and who later became a Hollywood actor, has died. He was 72.

Means died Monday at his ranch in Porcupine, S.D., on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Oglala Sioux Tribe spokeswoman Donna Salomon said. The firebrand former leader of the American Indian Movement and one-time Libertarian Party candidate for U.S. president had been battling advanced esophageal cancer.

Born on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Means joined the American Indian Movement in 1968 and soon became one of the group's prominent leaders. He took part in an occupation of the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs headquarters in Washington in 1972, and helped lead the 71-day standoff with federal authorities at Wounded Knee on Pine Ridge in 1973.

He found himself dogged for decades by questions about AIM’s alleged involvement in the slaying of a tribe member and the several gun battles with federal officers during the occupation of Wounded Knee, but denied the group ever promoted violence.

Russell Means, an American Indian activist who led the 1973 uprising at Wounded Knee, died Monday at his ranch in Porcupine, S.D. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

"You people who want to continue to put AIM in this certain pocket of illegality, I can't stand you people," Means said, lashing out an at audience member question during an April gathering commemorating the uprising's 40th anniversary. "I wish I was a little bit healthier and a little bit younger, because I wouldn't just talk."

Means told The Associated Press in 2011 that before AIM, there had been no advocate on a national or international scale for American Indians, and that Native Americans were ashamed of their heritage.

"No one except Hollywood stars and very rich Texans wore Indian jewelry," Means said. "And there was a plethora of dozens if not hundreds of athletic teams that in essence were insulting us, from grade schools to college. That's all changed."

The movement eventually faded away, the result of Native Americans becoming self-aware and self-determined, Means said.

Leaders of the American Indian Movement, from left, Dennis Banks, Russell Means and an unidentified third man appear at a press conference to list demands of the federal government for an increase in financial aid for the town of Wounded Knee, S.D., on March 16, 1973.

Means was arrested numerous times during his long career of protest and spent several periods in jail.

He ran unsuccessfully for president of his tribe and sought the Libertarian nomination for U.S. president, losing to Congressman Ron Paul at the party's 1987 national convention.

Means’ acting career began in 1992 when he portrayed Chingachgook alongside Daniel Day-Lewis' Hawkeye in "The Last of the Mohicans." He also appeared in the 1994 film "Natural Born Killers," voiced Chief Powhatan in the 1995 animated film "Pocahontas" and guest-starred in 2004 on the HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

Means kept busy with his Hollywood career even as he battled the cancer that finally took his life. The Internet Movie Database reports that Means had recently completed projects, and had more in the works.

Means appeared in a film called "Tiger Eyes," which was based on a Judy Blume novel. Means' son, Tatanka Means, starred. The film screened Sunday at the Sante Fe Independent Film Festival.

The Means duo also are credited in "Winnetou: The Beginning," set for a 2013 release.

Means recounted his life in the book "Where White Men Fear to Tread." He said he pulled no punches in his autobiography, admitting to his frailties and evils but also acknowledging his successes.

"I tell the truth, and I expose myself as a weak, misguided, misdirected, dysfunctional human being I used to be," he said.

Salomon, the tribal spokeswoman, called Means' death a "great loss" for the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

Hollywood movie premiere ends in clash between police and skateboarders

    View more videos at: http://nbclosangeles.com.

By Michelle Valles and Jason Kandel, NBCLosAngeles.com

A mob of skateboarders and skate fans who ran amok through Hollywood Saturday night attracted a swift crackdown by riot police.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

In a video captured by a driver caught in the middle of the mayhem, skaters are seen vandalizing businesses and throwing bottles, as bystanders can be seen running — a melee that more than 100 Los Angeles police officers in riot gear were deployed to quash.

The incident began before 9 p.m., when about 1,500 skaters and skate fans showed up to a theater that only holds 600 people to watch a free premiere of the skateboard movie, “Bake and Destroy.”

    More news from NBCLosAngeles.com

Those who were turned away reportedly reacted violently, police said.

“I just saw everyone in the street going crazy," witness Huckleberry Hamill said.

The caretaker of the Vine Theatre that hosted the event refused to talk to an NBC4 reporter.

Jay Mok, the owner of Hollywood Tattoo, which is next door to the theater, said he hid inside his shop while vandals etched his car with the letter A for anarchy.

Mok said this is not the first time a melee has broken out at the theater.

"It happened a few years back, a few times," Mok said. "They didn't get into a riot, but ... out of control."

Police dispersed about 500 skateboarding fans in less than three hours. No injuries were reported.

Los Angeles Police Sgt. Raul Jovel said several people threw rocks and bottles at officers during the clash. At least two cars were also damaged.

Tree trimmer crushed to death by palm fronds in Los Angeles

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

A tree trimmer was apparently crushed to death by heavy palm fronds that fell on him while he worked, authorities told The Los Angeles Times.

Emergency personnel responding to a call on Saturday about a trapped tree trimmer in Hollywood found the body of an unidentified man buried in palm fronds about 30 feet above the ground, according to the Times.

“Palm fronds like this have been known to weigh as much as half a ton,” Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey told the newspaper.  “In these scenarios, the tree trimmer can be crushed, asphyxiated or have their neck broken.”

Humphrey added that the cause of death has not yet been determined.

Fog vapor causes burns at Hollywood pre-party for Teen Choice Awards

    By Janet Kwak, NBCLosAngeles.com

LOS ANGELES -- More than a 20 people, including some teenagers, suffered respiratory irritations and burn injuries Saturday evening after exposure to "theatrical fog vapor'' at a pre-party for the Teen Choice Awards in Hollywood, a city fire official said.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Witnesses said the incident at the Avalon Hollywood resulted in chaos, calling to mind for a panicked moment Friday's shooting massacre at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo.

The incident was reported at 6:04 p.m. at 1735 N. Vine St. (map), Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

See the original report at NBCLosAngeles.com

Rescuers believe a special-effect fog system caused the injuries. Most victims felt better after fresh air and examination, Humphrey said.

"Along with respiratory irritation, a few patrons who contacted dripping liquid from apparent heavy use of smoke effect have superficial burn (injuries),'' Humphrey said.

Six people were taken to hospitals in unspecified condition. A total of 22 patients were assessed, according to Humphrey.

A hazmat team was investigating, Humphrey said.

The party was called off after the incident, he added.

Vine Street was closed between Franklin Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard while the group was assessed, he said.

Cold case: 1940s starlet's death is a mystery

    Bettmann-Corbis

Jean Elizabeth Spangler, a television actress, went missing in 1949.

    By Patrick Healy, NBCLosAngeles.com

It was one of those cases that seemed straight out of pulp fiction, a noir mystery written by one of those hard-boiled scribes who liked to surround damsels in distress with mobsters and movie stars.

Yet it was real life. And it defied solution.

Not because there were no clues. Perhaps because there were too many--all pointing in different directions.

    For more, visit NBCLosAngeles.com

The damsel was aspiring actress Jean Spangler, 26, whose mysterious 1949 disappearance is still considered an "open case" by LAPD's cold case unit.

"It's absolutely a classic noir mystery," said Denise Hamilton, a  former LA Times reporter turned novelist. She reveals that her mystery, "The Last Embrace," was inspired by the Spangler case.

"You have a beautiful, young starlet. Brunette. She's sultry. She's tall. She's leggy. And she's trying to make it in Hollywood," Hamilton said.

Black and white images from the Los Angeles Public Library Photo Collection reinforce Hamilton's description of Spangler, who appeared in half a dozen movies, just bit parts.

The late 1940s was a time when the studios still reigned over Hollywood, the mob ruled the Sunset Strip, and crooked politicians and police brass ran Los Angeles.

    'She's a party girl'
A divorced mother of a five-year-old, Spangler was still looking for her big break, and making time for an active social life.

"She's a party girl. She goes out with a lot of people: gangsters, movie stars, Hollywood executives. They found her little black book after she disappeared, and there were a lot of prominent names in it," said Hamilton.

She was last seen near her Park LaBrea area apartment on the Friday evening of Oct. 7, 1949.

Over that weekend, a Griffith Park Ranger found a purse near the entrance to Ferndell. Inside was Spangler's ID, and also a cryptic note addressed to someone named Kirk.

"Kirk: Can't wait any longer," it began. "Going to see Dr. Scott. It will work best this way while mother is away."

Perhaps it was written in a hurry. It was not signed.

"Well, the supposition was that she was pregnant by this Kirk and that she was going to have an abortion," said Hamilton.  One acquaintance said Spangler was coming to the end of the first trimester.

The most famous Kirk then in Hollywood was the actor Kirk Douglas, who had just finished filming, "Young Man with a Horn," in which Spangler had a small role.

Douglas spoke twice with LAPD investigators, insisting there was no personal relationship.  Detectives believed him, and Douglas was cleared. Since abortion was then illegal, it was assumed that Dr. Scott was a phony name, and who he might have been was never pinned down.

Hamilton speculates there may have been a medical complication, perhaps it was fatal, and perhaps Dr. Scott--whoever he was--decided to hide the remains.

This was less than three years after the infamous Black Dahlia murder. The remains of victim Elizabeth Short had been surgically severed.

The Black Dahlia case has never been solved officially. And the possibility Spangler died during an illegal abortion remains a possibility never proven.

The discovery of the purse did prompt a massive search of Griffith Park. But no other clues were found. How the purse got there remains just one of the mysteries.

Detectives at the time pursued other leads. Shortly before her disappearance, Spangler had been seen partying in Las Vegas with two hoods named Frank Niccoli and Davey Ogul, henchman for LA mob boss Mickey Cohen.

They also disappeared about the same time. Like Spangler, they were never found. Perhaps Spangler got caught in the wrong place with the wrong people at the wrong time.

    Possible, but never proven.

Spangler had spoken of expecting to come into some money, prompting speculation that perhaps she was planning to blackmail someone.  Perhaps that someone responded by killing her. Again, possible, never ruled out, but never proven.

Finally, there were ongoing tensions with her ex-husband, Dexter Benner. After their divorce, the child custody dispute over their daughter had been fierce. Benner accused Spangler of being an "unfit mother," and the sensational headlines in the local papers gave her more name recognition than she had gotten for her budding movie career.

Spangler's sister-in-law recalls that on that fateful final Friday evening, Spangler said she was going to meet with Benner to discuss overdue child support. Detectives contacted Benner and his new wife.

They said they had been together all evening, and they never saw Spangler. Detectives believed them. Not long after, Benner moved his family out of Los Angeles to the other side of the country, re-settling in Florida. Benner lived to the age of 87. He died five years ago.

In the years that followed Spangler's disappearance, reported sightings popped up in the media--as would happen later with Elvis. But none proved out.

"We never get to the bottom of it," observed author Hamilton, while re-visiting Ferndell, where Spangler's purse was found. "At every step along the way in this case there are more questions."

Hamilton suspects we may never learn what happened to Spangler. That of course, is part of the enduring fascination.

"The Jean Spangler case is a cautionary tale for all of us," Hamilton said. And we're drawn to the darkness like moths to a flame."

Hollywood body parts identified as retiree

    By msnbc.com staff

Updated 12:10 a.m. ET Saturday:  The man whose head, hands and feet were found in the Hollywood Hills was identified by police as 67-year-old retiree Hervey Medellin. Medellin was a resident of a Hollywood apartment building investigators searched earlier in the day. Sources told the Los Angeles Times that Medellin was a former Mexicana Airlines employee.

    Original story

LOS ANGELES -- Authorities have identified the man whose head, hands and feet were found in the Hollywood Hills, but have not yet released his name, officials said Friday.

Coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter told NBCLosAngeles.com that the name was being withheld at the request of the Los Angeles police detectives who are continuing to investigate the crime. Officials also want to notify the man's family before releasing the information to the public, the television website reported.

On Thursday evening, police served a search warrant in an apartment complex in Hollywood, close to Sunset Boulevard and Vine Streets, according to the Los Angeles Times. They towed a silver Honda from the building, the Times reported.

Although no arrests have been made in the case, the Times is reporting that at least one person was questioned by detectives Thursday. Sources close to the investigation said police were also looking to talk to at least one other man.

Meanwhile, investigators in California were downplaying any possible connection between the body parts case in Los Angeles and a dismembered body found earlier this month in a rural area of Tuscon, Ariz.

"It's fairly implausible that somebody would drive parts of a dead body five hours from Arizona to our Griffith Park," Los Angeles Police Cmdr. Andrew Smith told Reuters.

Smith added there was also no evidence that the man in California was the victim of organized crime or a serial killer.

Arizona sheriff officials say they are are awaiting DNA results, expected Tuesday, to try to definitively rule out any connection between the two cases.

Pima County Sheriff's Deputy Dawn Barkman said two men were cutting grass along the side of a rural road on Jan. 6 found a body without a head, hands or feet. Investigators determined the body had been in that location for only 24 hours, and a search turned up none of the missing body parts, she said.

Los Angeles police believe their victim was killed elsewhere and the body parts were buried or hidden to deter identification, according to NBCLosAngeles.com.

“They may have been disturbed by animals, but initially they were left off trail and not intended to be found,”  Smith told the NBC website.

By early afternoon Thursday, police ended their search in the Hollywood Hills area for the parts, after determining that major portions of the remains – the torso, the arms and the legs – were not in the park, NBC reported.

LA on edge after arson fires hit vehicles and homes in Hollywood area

Police in Los Angeles are searching for suspects after a string of 19 arson fires in the Hollywood area overnight. Investigators are asking the public for help in tracking down leads. NBC's George Lewis has more.

By NBC News and msnbc.com news services

Update at 8:02 p.m. ET: Los Angeles officials say they'll pay at least $35,000 in rewards for information leading to the conviction of the arsonist or arsonists. County supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky says the county is offering a $25,000 reward and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is adding another $10,000.

Original post: LOS ANGELES -- Police and fire officials on Friday were scrambling to investigate a series of 19 arson fires that ripped through parked cars in Hollywood and West Hollywood overnight and spread to some nearby homes -- including one once occupied by Doors frontman Jim Morrison.

There were 13 vehicle fires within the borders of the city of Los Angeles, and another six in West Hollywood areas patrolled by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

“We’ve called in additional investigative teams,” said Los Angeles Fire Capt. Jaime Moore. “The county has brought in L.A. County Sheriff arson bomb teams, and the LAPD is on tactical alert.”

We will "be preparing for what may be coming tonight," said Los Angeles County fire Battalion Chief Tom Sullivan.

Fire officials couldn't say whether the rash of fires was the work of a copycat. There was a series of other arson fires early Thursday, also in Hollywood. Two people have been arrested and remain in custody for those blazes, officials said.

On Friday, they scoured video from the parking garages where some of the cars were located in hopes of finding an image of whoever set the fires.

An investigator works the scene where fire caused damage to a two-story apartment at 1156 N. Cahuenga Blvd. in Hollywood, section of Los Angeles on Friday.

"This is an arsonist working," said LA City Fire Deputy Chief Mario D. Rueda. "These are very dangerous fires." So far, the only injury was to a firefighter injured in a fall, but Rueda warned that "these fires can lead to loss of life and injury."

West Hollywood Mayor John Duran heatedly spoke directly to the person or persons suspected of starting the fires.

“What were you thinking?” he said. “This is the most dense part of Los Angeles. If you’re trying to say something, this is not the way to say it.”

Investigators hoped to make enough progress Friday to prevent additional arson attacks tonight and over the holiday weekend.

The four-hour onslaught started shortly after midnight and sent firefighters scrambling to douse the flames. In nearly every case, the fire started in a parked car. Dozens of people were rousted from their homes, and power was disrupted in several neighborhoods.

One of the homes was in Laurel Canyon, where Morrison and his girlfriend once lived, neighbors said. The winding road was the inspiration for the Doors' hit "Love Street," and the 1922 house was listed for nearly $1.2 million earlier this year, according to real estate website Zillow.com.

Sandy Gendel, who owns a nearby restaurant, said he heard explosions from what he later determined were likely car tires. He saw flames 30 feet high coming from the deck of the former Morrison house and a gutted Mazda Miata.

"It was just like a towering inferno," Gendel said.

A Los Angeles Fire Department engine arrives at a fire in the Laurel Canyon section of Los Angeles early Friday,

Jeff Dorman, who lives in the neighborhood, said he and his wife were awakened by noise in the street.

As he and his neighbors watched the firefight, he said they worried about embers floating toward their houses because they are so close together. They also were concerned about a firebug being loose in their neighborhood.

"One spark could have been a huge problem," Dorman said. "The fire department did a fantastic job."

Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge, who represents much of the Hollywood area where blazes were set, urged residents to call 911 or a fire hotline at 213-893-9800 if they have information about the fires, or if they see someone who appears to be preparing to set new fires.
