Anybody missing a giant head? College crew team found one floating in river

A giant foam head floats on the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Monday, April 22.

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

A huge foam and fiberglass head was discovered floating in New York's Hudson River by a college crew team earlier this week, and days later nobody knows where it came from.

The head, which is at least 7 feet tall and 5 feet wide, was found Monday morning by the Marist College men's crew team.

"The coach, who is in a motorboat, took a quick spin out and investigated it, and was as baffled as anyone by what he saw," said Greg Cannon, spokesman for Marist College. "But because it was a navigation hazard, he felt it was his duty to haul it in. It took about 10 members of his team to haul it in."

Because it was waterlogged, it weighed "at least a couple hundred pounds," he said. The head -- which has a foam core but is covered in a fiberglass shell and has metal rods in it -- has had a home in front of the Marist boathouse since it was dragged from the water.

Members of the Marist college crew team stand by a giant foam head found floating in the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Monday, April 22.

It's attracted lots of visitors and theories as to where it came from, including one suggestion that it came from a Mardi Gras parade and floated to Marist, which is located in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., overlooking the Hudson. But there have been no claims of ownership.

"It's not like someone just built it as a hobby, I don't think. It was definitely for an art installation, or a theater project," Cannon said.

The head, which has a gray shell and fleshy tones underneath, is missing some chunks, including its nose.

"It's kind of like a lost puppy," Cannon said. "If the owner shows up, we'll certainly return it, but I think the people will be sad to see it go."

Pair rescued after plane crashes into Hudson River

Two people have been rescued from a single-engine plane that crashed and sank into the Hudson River.

Police say the small plane with two people aboard crashed just before 5:30 p.m. ET Sunday off Yonkers, N.Y.

Authorities say the two survivors were wearing life vests when they were plucked from the waters about 20 to 30 minutes after the crash and taken to Jacobi Medical Center.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman described the plane as a Piper PA-32 single-engine aircraft. She says the pilot told local authorities that the flight departed from the Trenton-Robbinsville Airport in Robbinsville, N.J.

    More news from NBCNewYork.com

Lt. Toni Scherer of Empress Ambulance Service says the two — a man and a woman in their 30s — were treated for hypothermia and were listed in stable condition at Jacobi.

johmmyt is correct, no regulations for life jackets. I am guessing it was cold and they were wearing goose down type vest for the flight and the media reported them as life preservers. The media did get airplane right, it had two wings and a propeller. The media is not much on accuracy. 50% right is …

Police: Car in Hudson River was apparent suicide attempt

    NBC New York

A car that was pulled out of the Hudson River on Thursday morning.

By NBC and msnbc.com news services

A driver who was pulled out of Manhattan's Hudson River Thursday morning drove her car into the water in a possible suicide attempt, NBCNewYork.com reported Thursday afternoon.

The woman was rescued and hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation, NBC New York said. She was not physically injured from the incident.

Initially, NBC New York reported that a vehicle went into the river after an elderly driver lost control, plowing off the Henry Hudson Parkway at about 10 a.m. The station later clarified that the woman, who was a 42-year-old New Jersey resident, had driven the wrong way on the West Side Highway ramp. A witness said she drove through a park, collided into a guard rail, and went into the river.

According to NBC New York, police said she then climbed out of the car and yelled that she had made a mistake and needed help. She left a suicide note behind, they said.

FDNY officials threw a life ring to her and an officer jumped in to pull her out, according to CBS New York.

“We didn’t get any information from the victim herself,” Deputy Fire Chief Dan Donoghue said, reported CBS New York. “She was quite confused, really didn’t know what was going on.”

The car has been pulled out of the river. An investigation is ongoing.
