Messy face tips off cops to 'ice cream junkie' bandit

By Jeff Black, Staff Writer, NBC News

A Missouri burglary suspect was caught red handed — with a messy face, police say.

Police booking photo of Andrew Steven Jung

A self-described “ice cream junkie” has been charged with a felony after breaking into a church freezer and making off with an undetermined amount of the frozen delight, police say.

Police say Andrew Steven Jung, 24, of St. Charles, Mo., was intoxicated when he smashed a glass door to the kitchen at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on March 8. He went into the church’s deep freezer to steal the ice cream, police told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Jung was found walking some three blocks from the scene of the crime, police said. And, apparently, he was easy to spot: The still-drunk man had ice cream smeared on his face and clothing, police told the newspaper.

In a videotaped interview referred to in court documents, Jung said he was an “ice cream junkie,” the paper reported.

At the time of the incident, Jung was on probation for the burglary of another St. Charles church, the Post-Dispatch reported.

Jung, according to the St. Charles County court records, does not yet have an attorney. He remains in jail on $30,000 bond. He is charged with burglary, theft and property damage. A hearing is set in the case for March 25.

Jung was ordered to have no contact with St. Peters parish, according to court documents.

Ice cream store worker fired after posting racial slur about Obama on Facebook

    By NBC News staff

A California woman has been fired from her job as an ice cream store manager after she referred to President Barack Obama with a racial slur on Facebook and wrote “maybe he will get assassinated.”

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Denise Helms, 22, of Turlock, posted the Facebook statement on Tuesday night after Obama won re-election to a second term. The post referred to the president using the N word. “Maybe he will get assassinated this term..!!” Helms wrote, according to the Modesto Bee.

Helms later deleted the post after negative reaction to it began circulating on social media.

In an interview with FOX40 News on Thursday, Helms wasn’t apologetic about what she posted and maintained she is not a racist.

“The assassination part is kind of harsh,” Helms told FOX40. “I’m not saying I’d go do that or anything like that, by any means, but if it was to happen I don’t think I’d care one bit.”

Helms worked at the Cold Stone Creamery franchise store in Turlock.

The national Cold Stone Creamery chain tweeted Thursday night that Helms "is no longer w/ the company."

On Friday, Chris Kegle, director of the Turlock Cold Stone Creamery store, said he was shocked by Helms’ post.

"We found her comments to be very disgusting, and they do not reflect our opinions here," Kegle told the Bee. "We never saw anything from her at work like those comments."

A Secret Service agent in the Sacramento office said the agency would look into Helms’ comments.

Chocolate, vanilla or pot? Ice cream truck driver busted

A Maryland man faces charges after allegedly selling marijuana alongside frozen treats out of an ice cream truck. WRC-TV's Darcy Spencer reports.

A Waldorf, Md., man faces charges after being busted for allegedly selling drugs out of an ice cream truck.

After receiving a tip through Crime Solvers, Charles County sheriff’s deputies found bags of marijuana and a stash of cash in a truck operated by 20-year-old Alexander Hoskins, authorities said.

“Ice cream or marijuana, you can take your pick with this guy,” said Diane Richardson, of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

    For more, visit NBCWashington.com

Police stopped the truck at Bayswater Court and Sheffield Circle. They found the marijuana and cash in Hoskins’s underwear.

He apparently had been dealing from the truck for some time, according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

“We wish we got that call just a bit sooner so we could have found more drugs, but what we did find was significant enough to show that he had been dealing it, and for us, we’re removing a drug dealer off the streets,” Richardson said.

Hoskins was selling to teens and young adults through word of mouth, authorities said.

He was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

Hoskins is out on bond and out of business, authorities said. He won’t be selling ice cream again anytime soon.
