New York mother charged with murder of 4-year-old son

A New York mother was charged with the murder of her 4-year-old son after his body was discovered in an apartment complex. WNBC's Andrew Siff reports.

Police have charged a 46-year-old Westchester, N.Y., woman with murder after they found her 4-year-old son dead in the bedroom Monday.

Manuela Maria Morgado was arraigned in Village of Mamaroneck Court and was remanded to Westchester County without bail.

She is due back in court on Oct. 4. It was not immediately clear whether she has an attorney.

Officers were called to 1035 East Boston Post Rd. in the village of Mamaroneck at about 10:20 a.m. Monday, when a concerned family member asked them to check on the well-being of Morgado.

When police entered the bedroom there, they found the boy, Jason Reish, dead, and his mother groggy and semi-conscious.

Morgado was transported to the hospital for evaluation. Authorities were looking into whether she may have killed her son, then tried to kill herself.

"He was a great kid," said Reish's pre-school teacher, who did not want to be identified. "That's all I can say."

The tragedy startled neighbors at the suburban apartment complex in Mamaroneck. Those who knew the Reish family said there was no hint of any trouble in the home.

"She's just a sweet person," neighbor Andrew Landau said of the boy's mother. "Nothing bad I could say about her. Nothing that would say I saw them fighting or whatever. Nothing at all."

I love how neighbors, relatives and friends always say the person who just killed their child was "sweet, kind, loving, the best person you know....". Um...obviously they weren't. They were just good at hiding their problems from you.
