3 dead after medical helicopter crashes in Rochelle, Ill.

By Lauren Petty and Alexandra Clark, NBCChicago.com

A pilot and two nurses from a Rockford hospital were killed Monday night in a medical helicopter crash in Lee County, authorities confirm.

The helicopter was traveling from Rockford Memorial Hospital to a hospital in Mendota, Ill. when it crashed around 8:30 p.m., according to Federal Aviation Association spokesperson Tony Molinaro.

Pilot Andy Olson and flight nurses Jim Dillow and Karen Hollis were identified as the deceased. No patients were aboard the helicopter.

The helicopter went down in a cornfield in Compton, a small town near Rochelle. The debris scattered across the entire field, according to Lee County Sheriff John R. Varga.

"Basically what we got was a phone call of an aircraft flying low," Varga said. "People in the area were familiar enough with aircraft that comes across this way, and one of the farmers in the area actually spotted the wreckage."

Federal inspectors are investigating what caused the crash.

"At Rockford Health System, our hearts our heavy," the hospital said in a statement. "We grieve the loss of three heroes who dedicated their careers to serving others."

The health system said they're looking into the possibility of weather playing a role in the crash. At 8 p.m. Monday, light snow and flurries were reported at an airport near Rochelle.

Surgeons remove barbecue brush bristle from Washington man's gut

A 31-year-old Washington state man gets a barbecue tool bristle stuck in his stomach. KING's Chris Daniels reports.

By Chris Daniels, KING 5 News

TACOMA, Washington – A man underwent emergency surgery after a steel bristle from a barbecue grill brush got into his steak became lodged in his intestinal tract.

Adam Wojtanowicz went to Tacoma General Hospital after antibiotics and medication didn’t ease his acute stomach pain on Sunday.

“I would say it was more like being stabbed in the gut,” said the 31-year-old.

His case came despite a warning from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – published to coincide with the 4 July celebrations and reported by msnbc.com Vitals – into the danger posed by barbecue grill brushes.

Physicians at the hospital performed a CAT scan, and Dr. Steve Norton performed emergency surgery on Wojtanowicz, removing a thin, metal bristle from his intestinal tract.

Something not so tasty in your barbecue? Brush debris

    KING5

A doctor performed emergency surgery on Adam Wojtanowicz and pulled out a thin, metal bristle from his intestinal tract.

Wojtanowicz said he recently hosted a barbecue at his house, and the steel bristle from his grill brush likely fell on to his steak.  He said he probably swallowed it without knowing.

The CDC says it knows of at least six people who have recently suffered similar injuries from brush bristles.  It does not blame a particular brand or type of brush.

Read the full story at KING 5

“This is a huge public safety issue,” says Norton, who says if untreated, the bristle could lead to internal intestinal leakage resulting in death.  “I’m now going to think every time now that I go out and barbecue my steaks.”

Wojtanowicz was expected to make a full recovery.

“This solidifies the fact it’s the most expensive steak I’ve ever bought,” he said.

Cops: 51-year-old man cross-dressed to fake medical claims

By Vikki Vargas and Julie Brayton, NBCLosAngeles.com

LOS ANGELES -- Authorities say a man masqueraded as a female to get into three local hospitals, charging more than $100,000 in medical bills to a woman's medical card.

    Follow @msnbc_us

"He had enough personal information, including the victim's address, to obtain some type of health care card under the victim's name," said Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Jim Amormino of 51-year-old Perla Serrano.

Police said Serrano was arrested initially because he was found sleeping overnight along a roadside in San Clemente. Investigators described him as a transient, and believed he was a woman.

"He wore clothes that females would wear, such as a female-type sweatshirt with a hood, or female-type shirt or blouse, not necessarily a dress," Amormino said.

He was also wearing an identification bracelet from a San Clemente hospital, one of three in South Orange County where he is accused of racking up $100,000 in medical bills, police said.

Serrano is facing six charges of identity theft, burglary and impersonation. The victim is said to resemble Serrano.

"This has been a nightmare for the victim," Amormino said, adding "as one could imagine."

USDA cites Harvard's primate research center in animal death

    By msnbc.com staff

Harvard Medical School officials promised to improve conditions at the school's research center after a federal report cited a number of problems involving the treatment and condition of its animals -- including the death of one primate.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture report listed five citations at the New England Primate Research Center in Southborough, The Boston Globe reported on Wednesday.

The citations, including one issued in the death of one primate in October, involved concern over the center's enclosures and hair loss and unusual behavior of its four monkeys. The report said the research facility had corrected all of its citations.

The primate’s death, which happened after the animal escaped from its cage in October, was the second animal death at the facility in 2011, according to the Globe. In February, a primate died at another Harvard facility after anaesthesia was improperly administered, the Globe reported.

According to The Telegram & Gazette newspaper of Worcester, Mass., USDA spokesman David Sacks said no action has taken place and he didn’t know if an investigation would ensue.

“Is five a pretty large number of non-compliances? It is. But are they reaching a level of egregious mishandling or systemic problems in terms of inhumane treatment of animals? I don’t see that here,” Sacks told the Telegram.
