Priest pleads guilty to drug-peddling charges

Monsignor Kevin Wallin of the Diocese of Bridgeport, 2010.

    By LeAnne Gendreau, NBCConnecticut.com

A Connecticut Roman Catholic priest pleaded guilty on Tuesday to selling 1.7 kilograms of methamphetamine.

Monsignor Kevin Wallin, the 61-year-old former pastor of St. Augustine Parish in Bridgeport, was arrested on Jan. 3, accused of receiving shipments of crystal meth from a California distributor and selling drugs to an undercover officer six times between September 2012 and January 2013.

According to court documents, Wallin had a crystal meth addiction and sold the drug out of his Waterbury apartment. He also sold drugs from the parking lot of Land of Oz in North Haven, an adult specialty store and smoke shop, that he bought in the fall.

Investigators believe that Wallin bought the store with drug proceeds and might have intended to use it to launder drug money.

On Tuesday, he pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute 500 grams or more of a mixture and substance containing methamphetamine. In doing so, he admitted to receiving and distributing 1.7 kilograms of meth, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Wallin resigned in 2011 citing health and personal issues and was suspended from public ministry last May by the Diocese of Bridgeport. He will be sentenced on June 25.

He originally pleaded not guilty in December, but changed his plea on Tuesday.

Teacher finds meth lab remnants on Tennessee playground, authorities say

    By NBC News staff

A Tennessee teacher discovered the remnants of a mobile methamphetamine lab on a playground when she took her class out for recess, WSMV.com reported.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

"Meth-making material that was part of a shake-and-bake meth lab was discovered on the school playground," Sgt. Kyle Evans, Murfreesboro, Tenn.,  police spokesman, told WSMV.

Children did not come in contact with the drug-making paraphernalia -- a soda bottle and plastic tubing -- but the area was decontaminated as a precaution, WSMV said. No drugs were found inside the bottle, which had a hole poked in the top.

According to the report, one of the ingredients used to prevent grass from growing in the mulch can also be used to make meth.

"To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time we've had anything like this happen on one of our campus," Lisa Trail, Murfreesboro City Schools spokeswoman, told WSMV. "We hope it's the last time, but this is a learning experience."

Police said they have no leads yet as to who left the materials at the playground, News Channel 5 reported.

"Our teacher and our assistant principal handled it wonderfully," Trail told News Channel 5. "We did reach out to our parents, to let them know in advance what was found here, and how it's been taken care of."

The Mitchell Neilson Primary School in Murfreesboro is home to kindergarten, first grade and second grade students, according to News Channel 5.

Bay Area elementary school principal accused of dealing meth

    View more videos at: http://nbcbayarea.com.

By Lisa Fernandez and Kris Sanchez, NBCBayArea.com

Updated at 5:30 p.m. ET: The principal of a Bay Area elementary school was arraigned Monday on five felonies and one misdemeanor -- all related to the sale of drugs.

Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office via NBC Bay Area

Principal Eric Dean Lewis, of Montague Elementary School in Santa Clara, Calif., was arrested Friday on drug charges.

Eric Dean Lewis, principal of Montague Elementary School in Santa Clara, Calif., was in custody on Monday, following his Friday arrest, and declined NBC Bay Area's request for a jailhouse interview. His bail was set at $25,000. He did not enter a plea during his brief court hearing and was ordered to return on Friday. He was referred to the public defender's office.

Court documents show the 42-year-old Lewis was charged with possessing and transporting with the intent to sell controlled substances including methamphetamine, the club drug GHB and MDMA, otherwise known as Ecstasy. Lewis also faces a lesser charge of having an opium pipe, the documents show. When police showed up at his home, he had 4.8 grams of meth, 7 Ecstasy pills, about 450 grams of GHB and clear baggies, documents state.

Police reports by the Santa Clara County Specialized Enforcement Team that were obtained by NBC Bay Area on Monday show that Lewis became a target in September, after an anonymous tipster told a Mountain View police officer that the principal was selling meth in San Jose and San Francisco.

Last Tuesday, the Mountain View police officer, using an alias, contacted Lewis through an online dating service the principal allegedly used, which is where the principal wrote: "Let's kick it n (sic) blow someclouds. (sic)."

Blowing clouds, the officer wrote, means to smoke methamphetamine. Lewis then told the officer in the pretext conversation that he'd bring the drugs to a San Jose hotel with "the goods," the report states. But then Lewis changed his mind, the report states, saying he'd rather make the exchange in San Francisco. All the while, the report states, Lewis was texting about meth from his workplace in Santa Clara.

On Thursday, the officer secured a search warrant for Lewis' home and car, and was able to arrest him with a team of officers in San Francisco. When he was put into handcuffs, Lewis appeared confused, though he later acknowledged to police that he was the principal of Montague Elementary, the report states.

The news came as a shock to his school community, where he has taught for seven years. He was put on unpaid administrative leave following the arrest.

Santa Clara Unified School District spokeswoman Tabitha Keppler-Hurley told NBC Bay Area on Sunday night that Lewis has been a well-liked principal, and that the community was "in shock" over the allegations.

DEA: Cops searching for stolen iPads find $34 million in meth

    By Mike Anderson, NBCBayArea.com

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A San Jose home was the scene of one of the largest methamphetamine busts in United States history Thursday, according to the DEA. Three suspects were arrested on state drug violations after about 750 pounds of the drug was discovered in a home on the 4400 block of The Woods Drive. The find carries an estimated street value of $34 million.

Detectives from the Palo Alto Police Department were investigating a case of stolen Apple iPads Thursday. During a search of the San Jose home, they found a large amount of methamphetamine.

The DEA was called in and a state search warrant was issued.

During the search, they found what appeared to be a methamphetamine conversion laboratory, where the drug is transformed into crystal or "ice" form, according to the DEA.

Multiple items believed to be stolen from Palo Alto were also found at the home.

The investigation is ongoing and the names of the suspects have not been released.

Cops: Woman spent six hours in a Wal-Mart making meth

    Tulsa County Jail

Alisha Greta Halfmoon is accused of making meth inside an Oklahoma Wal-Mart.

    By msnbc.com

TULSA – Tulsa police arrested a 45-year-old woman they said mixed chemicals together to make methamphetamine inside a Wal-Mart store.

“She didn’t have the money to make the purchases of the chemicals that were needed so she was taking what was needed in the bottle,” Tulsa Police Officer David Shelby told FOX23.com.

Police said the suspect, Elizabeth Alisha Greta Halfmoon, had been in the store since noon on Thursday, taking chemicals from bottles and mixing them in order to make meth. She had been in the store for six hours, according to police.

Security officials called police once they spotted Halfmoon acting suspiciously.

Shelby said it was the first time he had seen anyone actually attempt to mix and make the drug in a store.

“When firefighters were on the scene she made statements to them that is what she was doing, she was attempting to obtain these chemicals and was in the process of trying to manufacture meth. However, she said she was not very good at it,” Shelby told the TV station.

One police officer received minor injuries when the chemicals in the bottle burned his hand. Nobody else was injured.

Shoppers expressed shock and outrage at the incident.

“Something could have happened, something could have blown up in there,” shopper Jonathan Tary told a television reporter.
