Seven people, including four children, died in a crash involving a tractor-trailer in upstate New York. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By M. Alex Johnson and Christopher Nelson, NBC News

Seven people, including children, were killed Wednesday evening in Truxton, N.Y., when a trailer detached from a tractor-trailer rig and hit a minivan, authorities said.

Cortland County Sheriff's Capt. Mark Helms told NBC News that seven of the eight occupants of the minivan were killed. The accident occurred at approximately 6:05 p.m. ET Wednesday, according to a statement from the sheriff's office.

The four children and three adults who died in the accident were identified later Thursday.

Teresa Bush, 26, died in the crash along with her two daughters, Alexis Bush, 4, and Jasmine Bush, 5, according to the sheriff's office. Lena Beckwith, 21; Carino Vanorden, 24; Alyssa Mead, 7; and Tyler Mead, 4, also died.

The father of two of the children killed in the crash, Shawn Mead, was being treated at Upstate Medical Center with unspecified injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.

The two occupants of the tractor-trailer, which was hauling crushed cars for a salvage company, weren't injured in the accident, which occurred on Route 13 in Truxton, about 25 miles south of Syracuse.

The driver was identified as Ryan Dorward, 26, and his passenger as Duane Newton, 44. The investigation is ongoing.

There were thunderstorms in the area Wednesday evening, but it wasn't known whether weather played a role in the crash. Thousands of customers were reported to be without power in the area after the storms swept through.

NBC News' Matthew DeLuca contributed to this report.

Wrong-way minivan collision on Ohio highway kills 4

    By NBC News staff

A minivan going the wrong way on a southwestern Ohio highway struck another minivan head-on early Sunday, killing four people and critically injuring two others, authorities said.

The first minivan was carrying a family leaving a Christmas party, and the vehicle it struck was carrying a family going to see grandparents for the holidays, The Associated Press reported.

The accident happened about 2:30 a.m. on Interstate 75 near milepost 35 in Warren County, near the town of Franklin.

In a news release, Ohio State Patrol Lt. Anne Ralston said a 1997 Dodge minivan was traveling south in the northbound lanes on I-75 when it struck a 2000 Chrysler minivan.

The driver of the Dodge minivan, Joshua Nkansah, 40, of Fairfield, Ohio, and his 7-year-old son, David Nkansah, died at the scene, Ralston said. A 4-year-old boy in the van was transported to a hospital in Middletown and then flown to Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati with what troopers said were life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Chrysler minivan, Michele Barhorst, 31, of Madisonville, Tenn., also died at the scene. Her husband, Scott Barhorst, 37, was flown to a hospital in Cincinnati where he died from his injuries, troopers said. A 9-year-old in the van was flown to Dayton Children's Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Two other children, ages 8 and 11, were being treated at a Middletown hospital for serious injuries, and an 18-year-old was being treated there for minor injuries, the patrol said.

Alcohol was a suspected factor in the crash, Ralston said.

Ohio State Patrol Sgt. Stan Jordan told the AP that investigators smelled liquor in the minivan that was going the wrong way and found a bottle of alcohol in the vehicle.

The accident shut down the highway for several hours Sunday morning, WDTN-TV reported.

Well, thank goodness cannabis is outlawed, and alcohol is legal. Much sympathy to all.

Van plunges off ferry after being hit by a Mercedes

    By Yvonne Beltzer , NBCLosAngeles.com

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- A minivan with two parents and two children on board plunged off the Balboa Ferry Friday morning after it was struck by another vehicle.

A ferry worker dove into the water and helped the family escape, getting the fourth person out of the minivan just seconds before it sank 15 feet into Newport Harbor.

No one was hurt -- the van went under just after the final passenger was rescued.

In addition to the ferry worker who led the rescue effort, two boaters pulled alongside to help.

Witnesses said a black Mercedes-Benz accidentally accelerated as it boarded the ferry. It rammed the minivan, pushing it into the water.

The Mercedes was left teetering off the end of the ferry.

The incident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. on the Balboa Island side of the ferry run.

Witnesses also said the minivan floated for about a minute and a half before it sank.
