Fake cops trying to rob heroin gang caught 'red-handed' in DEA sting

    NBC New York

A Bronx robbery crew posing as police officers planned to rob a heroin distribution ring Wednesday but walked into a Drug Enforcement Administration sting operation instead, law enforcement officials said. The crew were armed with guns, fake police vests and shirts.

    By Jonathan Dienst, NBCNewYork.com

NEW YORK — A robbery crew posing as police officers planned to rob a heroin distribution ring Wednesday but walked into a Drug Enforcement Administration sting operation instead, law enforcement officials said.

Using informants, DEA agents were able to infiltrate the Bronx gang which planned to carry out the drug deal rip-off and arrest the 16 suspected gangsters. The crew, allegedly led by Javion "King Kong" Camacho, were armed with guns, fake police vests and shirts.

Prosecutors said Camacho boasted to an informant that the "wolves are hungry" and that he liked the sound of "the job." In addition to recordings, investigators said there were text messages about the plot.

DEA agents said the suspects were set to carry out the holdup using a caravan of six cars, guns, ski masks, police T-shirts and a police scanner. Camacho admitted he was caught "red-handed," according to court papers.

"As alleged, this was a marauding gang of armed and violent thieves in the Bronx who masqueraded as police officers in order to trick their narcotics-dealing targets so they could steal their drugs and their cash," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said.

Others arrested and charged include Gary Sanchez, Ramon Jiminez, Victor Morel and Joshua Roman. The suspects were expected to be arraigned in Manhattan federal court late Thursday.

Attorney information on the suspects was not immediately available.

So let me get this right, the DEA setup a sting to nab thieves posing as cops who had intentions of robbing drug dealers? Seems to me that instead of using the tax payers money to setup a fake sting, why not setup real drug dealers with the fake cops, let the fake cops take down the real drug dealer …

'Everybody started running': 7 hurt as NYC crane collapses

    View more videos at: http://nbcnewyork.com.

By By Pei-Sze Cheng and Jonathan Dienst, NBCNewYork.com

NEW YORK -- A crane collapsed at a New York City construction site Wednesday, injuring seven workers, authorities said.

Officials said the mobile crane unit collapsed shortly before 2:30 p.m. The construction site is behind the famed Pepsi-Cola sign in Long Island City, Queens.

Three construction workers were trapped under the crane and had to be extricated, an FDNY deputy chief on the scene said. The most seriously injured suffered broken bones.

    'Everybody started running'
Carpenter Preston White said he was standing on scaffolding about 20 feet from the ground with some colleagues when the cable on the crane snapped while moving a stack of wood.

"You could hear the cable snap, and it recoiled back toward the crane," said White. "Everybody started running out of that way because that was all that was coming, the cable. And you heard a snap, and the next thing you know, the crane just buckled and it came crashing down."

"You could hear people screaming," he said. "You could hear people calling out, trying to find people. I was surprised I was still on the deck."

A 25-story residential building is being built on the site by developer TF Cornerstone.

    More stories from NBCNewYork.com

Matthew Knell, who lives across from the construction site, said he "heard a big bang."

Randall Todd said he was walking his dogs nearby when he heard the sound of what he described as breaking metal.

    View more videos at: http://nbcnewyork.com.

He looked over and saw "the top horizontal arm of the crane dropping, but it folded on itself, accordion-style, including the vertical tower, which seemed to snap in half."

The cause of the collapse was not immediately clear.

In a statement, TF Cornerstone said: "Site safety is always our first priority as it relates to construction, and we are cooperating fully with all relevant authorities to try and determine what caused this occurrence."

The work at the site was being carried out by subcontractor Cross Country Construction. The crane had been leased to Cross Country Construction by New York Crane.

FBI: Second suspect arrested in cannibal cop case

The FBI confirmed 23-year-old Michael Vanhise, of Trenton, was arrested early Friday in connection with the case of an NYPD officer who allegedly threatened to kidnap, cook and eat women.

By Shimon Prokupecz and Jonathan Dienst, NBCNewYork.com

A second man has been arrested in connection with the case of an NYPD officer who allegedly threatened to kidnap, cook and eat women in a bizarre plot where he fantasized about how "tasty" one victim looked and said it would be easy to roast a person in his oven, federal officials said.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

The FBI confirmed 23-year-old Michael Vanhise, of Trenton, was arrested early Friday. The agency would not provide additional details on his alleged involvement in the case until after his Manhattan court appearance later Friday. No information on an attorney was available.

According to court papers, Vanhise and 28-year-old Gilberto Valle, who was arrested in October, may have plotted via e-mail to kidnap and eat women.

    For more, visit NBCNewYork.com

Valle, of Queens, was previously charged with two counts of attempted kidnapping in the shocking case that includes online transcripts of his alleged plans, at one point telling a co-conspirator that his oven is "big enough to fit one of these girls if I folded their legs."

"I was thinking of tying her body onto some kind of apparatus ... cook her over a low heat, keep her alive as long as possible," he is accused of saying in the July conversation.

"She does look tasty, doesn't she," he added, according to the complaint.

According to the criminal complaint, Valle had files on his computer that referred to at least 100 women, including photographs, addresses and physical descriptions.

Ten of those women were interviewed by the FBI and confirmed that they know Valle, the complaint said.

Defense lawyer Julia Gato had said in court Valle's online chats were "just idle talk," pointing out no ropes, chemicals or other suspicious material were found in his home.

"We're talking about someone with a fantasy, in a deviant world where people talk about unreal things," said Gato. "At worst, he has sexual fantasies about people he knows."

Gato said Valle was a respected officer in the NYPD, with six and a half years on the force. He was suspended from the NYPD pending the outcome of the case.

Gunbattle on New York subway leaves 2 cops injured; 3rd cop shot elsewhere

    View more videos at: http://nbcnewyork.com.

By Andrew Siff and Shimon Prokupecz, NBCNewYork.com

Two New York police officers were shot by an armed subway rider in Brooklyn and an off-duty officer was shot during an attempted robbery at a Bronx auto shop in the span of an hour Thursday, bringing the number of NYPD cops wounded by gunfire in the first three days of 2013 to a quarter of the total shot all of last year, authorities said.

In Brooklyn, a lieutenant and three officers assigned to the transit division were in plainclothes on patrol in two subway cars of a Manhattan-bound N train shortly after 7:30 p.m. when they noticed a man moving illegally between the cars. Officers Lukasz Kozicki and Michael Levay stopped the man as the train pulled up to the Fort Hamilton Parkway stop in Dyker Heights, intending to question him and pull him off the subway, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Thursday evening.

    More news from NBCNewYork.com

When asked for identification, the suspect appeared to reach for a wallet, but pulled out a 9-millimeter Taurus and opened fire on the officers, Kelly said. Kozicki, 32, was hit three times -- once in each thigh and once in the groin. Levay, 27, was hit once in the lower back but was able to return fire, fatally shooting the suspect.

One passenger was grazed in the gunfire exchange and wasn't seriously hurt, Kelly said. Other passengers on the train were able to flee onto the platform when the gunfire erupted. The station was not crowded at the time of the incident, Kelly said.

Kozicki and Levay were taken to Lutheran Medical Center, where they were listed in stable condition and are expected to make full recoveries. A witness told police the gunman appeared to notice the officers' bullet-resistant vests and aimed low before he fired.

The unidentified suspect had a past criminal record of five assaults, including one with a knife, officials said.

Earlier Thursday, an off-duty officer was shot in the Bronx during an apparent robbery attempt. Officer Juan Pichardo was working at his family's dealership when two men, one of them armed with a handgun, walked into the store and, after pretending to be interested in a vehicle, brandished the weapon.

Pichardo was shot in the leg during the fracas that ensued; he was not armed. He and another employee managed to wrestle one of the suspects to the ground and disarm him. The second suspect who had entered the store fled to a getaway vehicle outside the building, while Pichardo held the other suspect until police arrived. Police caught up with the getaway car a short time later and arrested three occupants inside. Their identities are unknown.

Pichardo was taken to the hospital with a bullet wound to the leg, but is expected to be OK. He was the third NYPD officer to be shot on Thursday, the third day of the year. Only 12 police officers were shot in all of 2012, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Thursday.

“In recent weeks, we've heard some people say that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. But sometimes the good guys get shot – and sometimes, they are killed," the mayor said Thursday night from the hospital where the two officers wounded in the Brooklyn incident were recovering. "Tonight, thank God, three good guys – three New York City police officers, who acted heroically – are going to make it. But we owe it to the good guys to do whatever we can to protect them – just as they do whatever they can to protect us. Instead, Washington is letting the bad guys shoot our police officers, our children, our neighbors – and it just has to stop."

Bloomberg's "good guys with guns" remark was an apparent retort to the National Rifle Association'srecent statement that "the only thing that stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." The mayor has been a vocal advocate for tighter gun control.

1 dead, 33 injured in Long Island Expressway pileup

    View more videos at: http://nbcnewyork.com.

    By NBCNewYork.com and wire reports

SHIRLEY, N.Y. -- A tractor-trailer hauling debris from superstorm Sandy triggered a deadly 35-vehicle pileup on the Long Island Expressway in New York on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The truck struck several cars near exit 68 in the town of Shirley, which is located about 70 miles east of New York City.

The collision set off a chain-reaction crash that left the tractor-trailer and two additional vehicles ablaze. A 68-year-old woman driving a Toyota Camry was killed, police said. An additional 33 people were injured, including a 57-year-old man who is in serious condition.

A car involved in the initial collision with the tractor-trailer was incinerated beyond recognition, with its tires punctured and paint burned off its body. Some SUVs and cars suffered extensive damage while others appeared to have barely a scratch; all were haphazardly stopped across the highway, which is up to six lanes in parts.

    'It sounded like thunder'
One driver described the crash unfolding next to him while he was on the freeway.

"All we heard was crashing behind us, it sounded like thunder," said Jimmy Batjley. "Looking back, all I saw was glass and metal, and they went right past us, at least 40 miles per hour."

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

"If you can imagine all the cars were lined up, and [the tractor-trailer] just came right in and just pushed that entire line," said Batjley. He said the tractor-trailer driver was pulled out before the truck burst into flames.

Full Sandy coverage from NBC News

Aerial footage provided by News12 Long Island showed the trailer partly incinerated at dusk, alongside at least two cars that appeared to be blackened and burned. Multiple other vehicles, including a box truck, were scattered nearby, apparently having collided into one another or the guardrail.

The tractor-trailer was driven by 42-year-old Raymond Simoneau of Rockingham, Vt. Police told The Associated Press that Simoneau wasn't injured.

    More news from NBCNewYork.com

The tractor-trailer and several of the vehicles involved in the crash were impounded for safety checks.

Five fire departments responded to the scene as well as 19 Emergency Medical Services agencies, police said.

The weather was clear at the time of the crash, according to Reuters.

"Anybody rolling up on this scene you would think there would be definitely more than just one fatality," said John Mirando, chief of the Ridge Fire Department. "It's just lucky that it's only one, but it could have been a lot worse."

NBCNewYork.com, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Three-story high tower of trash remains in Sandy's wake

    View more videos at: http://nbcnewyork.com.

    By Brian Thompson, NBCNewYork.com

A pile of household debris from Sandy's ruins in Long Branch, N.J., is drawing complaints from residents of an apartment complex next door.

The tower of trash is roughly three stories high and sits on an empty lot next to the upscale Pier Village shopping and apartment development on the city's beachfront.

Full Sandy coverage from NBC News

"You pay to live in a nice community, and this should not be your view," said Liz Angrisani, who has lived in Pier Village for two years.

Families are still living in hotels paid for by FEMA vouchers, and on Wednesday FEMA said there are an estimated 10,000 people who require alternate housing yet there are only 6,000 rental properties available. NBC's Katy Tur reports.

Now Angrisani worries about rats and other rodents in her neighborhood.

Mary McDonnell, who owns The Stone Hut, a gift boutique, said the pile on Ocean Boulevard makes passing motorists think the shops are closed, when in reality they suffered no damage from Sandy.

Mayor Adam Scheider told NBC 4 New York that the city has had no other choice than to store the debris, which includes mattresses, sofas, toys and countless other items, on the vacant lot.

"We just weren't going to get the streets cleared," said Schneider, explaining that sending dump trucks to a landfill would take two hours total.

But he said the City Council will meet Friday to award a contract to start hauling it away, and he expects activity to begin a day or two later.

Rock legends perform at Sandy benefit show

That can't come too soon for the merchants of Pier Village. In the meantime, residents like Angrisani say the trash tower reminds her of the work ahead.

"It keeps you motivated to help the community and rebuild," she said.

Cops: 2 arrested over alleged gas hoarding in Connecticut

    Orange Police Department

These are the buckets Yunus Latif used to fill up gas in Orange. He planned to take them to his friends and neighbors in Queens, N.Y.

    By NBCNewYork.com

Police arrested two men on Sunday for their involvement in alleged gas hoarding in Connecticut.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Police say Yunus Latif, 47, of Richmond Hill, Queens, filled 30 five-gallon plastic tubs with four gallons of gas each at a station in Orange, Conn., with the intention of bringing it back to neighbors in New York.

Fuel shortage expected to last for days, Cuomo says

A witness told police they saw Latif loading up plastic containers filled with gas into his truck. When police arrived, they discovered the tubs with gas loaded in the back of the truck. The plastic lids were expanding, police say.

Gas can only be transported in Department of Transportation-approved containers.

    Full coverage of Sandy's aftermath

Police also arrested the attendant at the gas station, 41-year-old Muniruzzaman Gomosta, who sold the gas to Latif but said he did not realize he was buying so much gas because the store was busy.

They were both issued misdemeanor summonses for violation of regulation concerning flammable or combustible liquids

NBCConnecticut.com reported that Latif and Gomosta are expected to appear in court on November 19.

Gas lines continue to stretch onto highways as New Jerseyans try to get back to normal following Sandy. NBC's Richard Lui reports.

Well, the headline says hoarding. But it doesn't say they were charged with that. Clearly the way he was transporting it was a problem, but besides that I don't see how they could charge them with anything else unless there was some legally designated rationing limit. By Brian Thompson and Chris Glorioso, NBCNewYork.com

Officials say 336,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the waters between Staten Island and New Jersey after a storage tank was lifted and ruptured from the surge from Sandy.

All of the spilled fuel is believed to be contained by booms put in the Arthur Kill waterway, the Coast Guard says.

The liquid leaked at the Motiva oil tank facility in Woodbridge, N.J., according to authorities.
