Cops: Man shoots up Philly club with AK-47

    View more videos at: http://nbcphiladelphia.com.

    By Lauren DiSanto, NBCPhiladelphia.com

Philadelphia Police say minutes after two men were kicked out of a gentleman's club, one of them returned, brandishing an AK-47.

Surveillance video released today shows the man, who police identify as Henry Pettigrew, running from the parking lot into the Purple Orchard, located at 61st and Passyunk Avenue, with the assault rifle in hand.

He slips and falls twice, before opening the door of the club and spraying gunfire inside.

One person was injured in the May 11 shooting, but police say that victim will survive.

The video also shows Pettigrew firing several shots at a car in the parking lot.

According to court records, Pettigrew was arrested in 2008 for a dozen charges-- including several charges involving firearms. All 12 of those charges against him were withdrawn.

The second suspect, who police are working to identify, is believed to have been the getaway driver who fled the scene in a light-colored sedan.

Pettigrew is considered armed and dangerous and police say to call 911 if you spot either suspect.

Sean - there is no need to defend him. My question is why in 2008 when he was arrested for "several charges involving firearms" did the system let him off - dropping all charges? The problem is still the lack of enforcement of the laws, not the laws themselves.

On camera: Baby in stroller falls onto train tracks

    View more videos at: http://nbcphiladelphia.com.

    By David Chang, NBC10.com

A 14-month-old girl was hospitalized after falling onto commuter train tracks in West Philadelphia.

Surveillance video shows a woman on the platform with her daughter in a stroller at the 56th Street SEPTA station around 1 p.m. Wednesday. Suddenly, the stroller slowly rolls toward the eastbound track and topples over.

"What it looks like to us is that the mother became distracted by something, didn't apply the brake on the stroller and the stroller was able to move off the platform and onto the tracks,'' said Scott Sauer, director of system safety for SEPTA.

The stroller came to rest on the outer rail, which carried no charge. The woman jumped off the platform to free the baby and hand her off to a man standing on the platform above.

    More news from NBC10.com

As the mother rescued her child, another woman ran to an emergency call box and hit the button, alerting SEPTA controllers of the incident.

The controllers then alerted an approaching train that was only one station away.

If the woman had not pressed the emergency button, the mother and her child could have had less than a minute to get off the tracks before the next train arrived.

Police say another good Samaritan hopped down the tracks to help the mother up.

The child was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for treatment of a cut on her forehead but is expected to be okay.

Sauer said during a news conference that watching the video was "gut-wrenching.''

"With the stroller moving at such a slow rate of speed, you know, you want to call out to someone, 'Hey, the stroller's moving! Somebody grab the stroller,''' Sauer said.

SEPTA police said no charges will be filed but the accident serves as a reminder for other riders to lock stroller brakes when waiting on platforms.

Teen killed after being dragged from home by gunmen

    View more videos at: http://nbcphiladelphia.com.

    By David Chang, NBC10.com

A 19-year-old man is dead after police say he was dragged out of his Pennsylvania home by several gunmen and was later found lying on the side of a road at least two miles away.

On Sunday, shortly after 2 p.m., police responded to a home invasion report at a house in West Pottsgrove Township, about 30 miles north-west of Philadelphia.

Police say several gunmen entered the home and demanded money from the homeowners. Neighbors say an older woman lives at the home with her adopted children.

"I believe that she adopted those children, maybe three or four," said Dee Bleacher.

The gunmen then allegedly dragged one resident, 19-year-old Kareem Ali Borowy, out of the house at gunpoint. Investigators say Borowy was targeted and that the home invasion was not a random act.

    Read more stories from NBC10.com

Shortly before 2:30 p.m., officials say a passing motorist found Borowy lying on the side of a road in Lower Pottsgrove Township. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after ambulance crews arrived.

Bleacher says there have been prior issues at the house where the home invasion took place.

"Police have been there numerous times," said Bleacher. "Maybe once every two months on average."

Investigators have not yet revealed how Borowy died and they are still trying to determine a motive.

Sources tell NBC10's Daralene Jones that preliminary information suggests that drugs were involved however.

No arrests have been made. Police have not yet released any descriptions of the suspects.

Cat that went missing after Sandy turns up at home six months later

Uranie Roberts only has one way to describe it.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

    "It's a miracle," she said.

Lost for half a year, her beloved pet cat “Porsche” somehow found his way home.

Last November, Roberts and her family, including Porsche, had to be evacuated by boat from their home in the Chadwick Beach Island section of Toms River, N.J., after Superstorm Sandy hit the area. The family temporarily relocated to a relative’s home in Point Pleasant Borough before returning to Toms River. While the family was in Point Pleasant however, Porsche went missing.

“He got out of the house and that was the last we saw of him,” said Carol Baumann, Uranie’s daughter.

Baumann believed Porsche was gone for good. That was until Wednesday when she heard the familiar sound of meowing coming from the back deck of their Toms River home. When she walked toward it, she saw something she never thought she would see again.

“I saw the green eyes and I said, ‘My God in heaven, it’s Porsche!’” said Baumann.

Somehow the cat managed to travel eight miles through storm destruction, traffic and even over a bridge to get back to his original home.

“It’s just amazing how he found his way home,” said Baumann. “I wish he could talk.”

Baumann and Roberts plan to have Porsche checked out by a vet next week. They say however that it doesn’t look like he missed many meals in the past six months.

“You could see he was eating,” said Uranie. “His fur is sleek and soft.”

Whether he’s just extremely resourceful or truly does have nine lives, Baumann and Roberts are just glad to have him back.

“It’s wonderful,” said Baumann. “I missed him so bad.”

Yer out! Ejected Little League coach smacks 17-year-old ump

    By NBCPhiladelphia.com

Witnesses say a Little League baseball coach in New Jersey slapped a 17-year-old umpire who had ejected him from the game.

Berkeley Township, N.J., police say 43-year-old Thomas Murphy was given summonses for simple assault and simple assault at a sporting event in the presence of children under 16.

Thursday's game between the Dodgers and Mets included players who ranged in age from 10- to 12-years-old.

Det. Sgt. Jim Smith told the Asbury Park Press there was an argument about a call on the base paths and the coach smacked the teenage ump in the ear after the umpire threw him out of the game.

“When the umpire walked away, the coach smacked him in the ear,” Smith told the newspaper.

The umpire didn't require medical treatment.

Army couple charged with force-feeding foster kids hot sauce, withholding water

    Family Photo

Carolyn and Major John E. Jackson

    By Karen Araiza, NBCPhiladelphia.com

A U.S. Army major and his wife from Pennsylvania are accused of abusing their three foster children — force-feeding them hot sauce, withholding water, and breaking their bones, according to U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman.

In one instance, according to court documents, the couple even made one of their biological children stand guard to make sure the foster children would not be able to quench their thirst with water from the toilet.

The wife was arrested this morning and husband John Jackson surrendered to authorities at their home in Mount Holly, New Jersey.

John E. Jackson, 37, is a U.S. Army major, formerly with the Picatinny Arsenal Installation in Morris County, N.J. Jackson and his wife, Carolyn Jackson, 35, are charged in a 17-count indictment.

"Carolyn and John Jackson are charged with unimaginable cruelty to children they were trusted to protect," Fishman said in a statement.

    READ: The entire indictment

According to court documents, the Jacksons have three biological children and had three foster children who they adopted. The indictment alleges that the parents agreed to use "disciplinary and child-rearing techniques that were neglectful and cruel" on their adopted children, and that they physically assaulted all six children. One of their adopted children died in May of 2008.

Federal prosecutors outline a story of physical and emotional abuse, primarily against the adopted children.

The alleged abuse occurred for almost five years, from approximately August of 2005 until April of 2010 while the family lived in Morris County, according to the indictment.

Prosecutors say the Jacksons physically assaulted their children with various objects, withheld proper medical care for their adopted children, forced two of them to consume foods like red pepper flakes, hot sauce and raw onion, which caused pain and suffering to the children.

They're also accused of withholding water from one child while forcing him to eat salt-laden food and substances, which led to a life-threatening condition.

According to court documents, the parents told their biological children that they were "training" the other children to behave through a variety of methods. They told their biological kids that the physical assaults were justified and that they should not talk about what was going on to others.

When one of the biological children did confide in a family friend, after that friend confronted the father, the boy was allegedly beaten with a belt.

Other allegations in the indictment include the parents allegedly forcing the kids to eat hot sauce, red pepper flakes and raw onion that caused the children "pain and suffering."

The children are in the care of the state right now.

The U.S. Army said it is cooperating fully with investigators and could not comment any further. They referred all inquiries to the U.S. Attorney's office.

The Jacksons have not responded publicly to the charges, but an online search reveals a petition and articles written about the ordeal, dating back to 2011.

According to the petition, the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services removed the remaining five children from the home in April of 2010. The petition was a move to pressure DYFS to return the children:

Army Major Jackson and his wife, Carolyn, have been staunch advocates for children, adopting children, in addition to their biological children, who would have been hard to place because of their medical needs. They have provided their children with a stable, loving home. NJ DYFS must do what is in the best interests of the Jackson children and return them to their parents. We urge you to intervene on their behalf.

622 people signed the petition. And there has been other online support, characterized in World Net Daily as a “Christian family broken apart by a state agency holding 5 kids.”

The article said Jackson and his wife are “devout Christian homeschoolers with a history of serving as adoptive and foster parents ... During the course of a nine-month legal battle to regain custody of their children, the Jacksons say they have encountered prejudice against their religion and homeschooling as they fight a state agency determined to see the children adopted by strangers no matter what the evidence says."

According to the article, the Jacksons complained that one DYFS worker in particular, would not allow them to pray with their children. Major Jackson also claimed in the report that DYFS misrepresented statements he and his children made in order to build a case against the parents.

“My children are being held hostage, they’ve been kidnapped,” he told the independent, a conservative news website.

"Devout Christian homeschoolers." I suspected this long before I read it. If these pigs get any of these kids back, they'll likely end up murdering them. Lock them up for good, shoot them or hang them, but don't allow them near children or animals.

Wife accidentally kills husband during gun lesson: Police

    David Chang, NBCPhiladelphia.com

A fun night for a Pennsylvania couple turned deadly after police say the woman accidentally shot and killed her husband.

On Friday, around 9 p.m., police say Michael Wanko, 43, and Michele Wanko, 42, were “casually drinking” vodka and lemonade together inside their home on West Roland Road in Parkside, Penn. Around 3:30 a.m., police say the couple went into their basement so that Michael could show his wife how to use a semiautomatic pistol. The couple went into a work room where several weapons were kept inside a safe.

“He took several of the weapons out, handguns and was demonstrating to her how the weapon worked as far as taking the magazine out, making sure it was safe, and how to pull the slide back,” said Parkside Police Chief John Egan.

As Michael reached into a safe to grab a gun, police say Michele picked up another gun and pulled the slide back, just as her husband had instructed her.

“When she let go of the slide, the weapon went off,” said Chief Egan.

Michael was struck in the upper chest. At the time, police say, the couple’s 2-year-old and 5-year-old sons were sleeping upstairs. Police say the 5-year-old was awakened by his mother’s frantic screams as she called 911.

Police arrived at the home around 4 a.m. Michael was taken to Crozer-Chester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Michele was charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and possessing an instrument of crime. She was processed at the Chester City Jail and released on $250,000 unsecured bail. Her two children are currently staying with relatives.

Police say the gun Michele used was turned over to the Delaware County ballistics unit where investigators would “ascertain if the weapon malfunctioned or if it operated properly.”

Neighbors described the Wanko family as “nice people” who always did things with their children and were well respected throughout the neighborhood. Chief Egan says police were called to their home a year ago for a domestic dispute but that it was only “a shouting match between the two.” No one was charged in that incident.

10-year-old boy's fake gun stunt almost goes terribly awry

    View more videos at: http://nbcphiladelphia.com.

    By Vince Lattanzio, NBCPhiladelphia.com

Philadelphia Police say they questioned a 10-year-old boy seen in a video pointing what appears to be a semi-automatic handgun at a girl and later a U.S. Marine -- who went and got his own weapon. Police sources tell NBC10 they were later able to determine that the boy's gun wasn't real.

The young boy, escorted by his parents, turned himself into police this evening but was released, according to the authorities.

Wearing a backpack, red T-shirt and shorts, a young boy was captured on surveillance video trotting up to a group of girls walking near 16th and Ontario Streets in the Tioga section of Philadelphia around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

The boy, believed to be between 10 and 12 years old, pulls the toy handgun out of his pants and points it at one of the girls. The young woman can be seen putting her hands in the air as she slowly walks across the street. Moments later, an older boy comes up to the child with a backpack and takes the gun away.

That boy then walks down Ontario Street, drops to one knee and points the gun in the direction of a group of kids walking towards him. He then jumps up and runs towards the group brandishing the weapon.

"The other guy is following the boy closely to make sure he gets that gun back, so I would never presume that it's a toy gun." Philadelphia Police Lt. George McClay said.

Twenty minutes later, police say the same boys approached a 27-year-old man along the 3300 block of North 16th Street. Police say one of the boys then reached into his backpack, pulled out the handgun and said, “Hey buddy.”

The man, a U.S. Marine, ran into a nearby home and called 911. Lt. McClay said the unidentified Marine also grabbed his weapon. In the meantime, the kids fled south on 16th Street toward Allegheny Avenue.

Read the original story on NBCPhiladelphia.com

"By the time he gets back outside, these guys are already gone," Lt. McClay said. "Luckily enough, they are gone, cause this could've turned out to be a real disaster."

Surveillance video later shows the kids surrounding a SUV as it pulls up to a stop sign. The teens pile on top of the hood as others speak to the occupants of the vehicle. A few minutes later, the car drives off without an incident.

Philadelphia Police say they are searching for three kids in relation to these incidents. Their identities are unknown. Police believe smaller boy is between 10 and 12-years-old and that the two others are between 14 and 16-years-old.

Residents who live near where the incident took place were shocked by what happened.

"You can't just leave your kids on the streets like that, let the streets get a hold of them, you know," Karen Brown told NBC10.

"Oh my gosh, that gotta be the parent's fault," said Marian Brown. When I was coming up, you ain't have to worry about all of that."

This incident comes two weeks after two Philadelphia teens were shot outside Overbrook High School. Bernard Scott, 17, was killed after being caught in the crossfire during a fight at a playground across from the school.

Two suspects were taken into custody in that case, but charges have yet to be filed.

In response to gun violence at city-owned parks and recreation centers, officials passed a gun ban on those properties in March. Mayor Michael Nutter signed the ban into law a few weeks later.

Under the ban, violators face a fine of up to $2,000.

Anyone with information about the handgun assault case is asked to call Philadelphia Police's Northwest Detective Division at 215.686.3353.

Mom convinces son he has cancer to scam money from friends, cops allege

    View more videos at: http://nbcphiladelphia.com.

    By Danielle Johnson, NBC10.com

Police have charged a New Jersey mother who allegedly lied and said her son was suffering from cancer in order to deceive friends and loved ones out of thousands of dollars.

Investigators say Susan Stillwagon, 35, stole as much as $3,500 through cupcake and bracelet fundraisers by claiming that her 9-year-old son had a type of lymphoma and needed medical care.

"You tell people your son has cancer and they want to help," said Police Lieutenant Michael Probasco in Pennsauken, N.J.

Police got a tip earlier this week that Stillwagon’s story about her son wasn’t adding up. Investigators subpoenaed medical records and discovered she had been lying.

Probasco says Stillwagon even convinced her son he was sick to carry out the scheme.

    More news from NBC10.com

The suspect’s mother, who did not tell NBC10.com her name, says that her daughter is being treated at a local hospital.

“I will just tell you my daughter is sick and something snapped in her head. That’s why she is where she is so that we can find out what’s wrong with her,” said Stillwagon’s mother. “I am very concerned for my daughter, very concerned. We will get through this but people have to leave us alone or we will never get through it.”

New Jersey’s Division of Youth and Families checked on Stillwagon's four children Tuesday.

“They came to make sure the house is livable, food in fridge and that the kids aren't being mistreated and they didn’t find any of that,” said Lieutenant Michael Probasco.

Tamara Disalvo, a neighbor, says her thoughts are with the little boy.

“Just as a friend and neighbor you do feel deceived by this. He must be pretty confused because of he was deceived this way by his mother, that’s got to feel awful,” said Disalvo.

Stillwagon was charged with theft by deception and using her own son to commit a crime.
