Half-ton of pot found on bus at border

    By Christina London, NBCSanDiego.com

One bus driver took going green to a whole new level this week, filling his gas tank with a thousand pounds of pot.

Customs and Border Protection officers near San Diego discovered the stash hidden inside a commercial bus in line to cross at the San Ysidro port of entry.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

A 56-year-old Mexican citizen was waiting with the bus, according to border officials. An officer sensed something was off, and a detection dog confirmed the suspicion. An imaging system revealed oddities with the bus's gas tank.

Read the original story on NBCSanDiego.com

CBP officers searched the bus and found 110 packages of marijuana inside the tank, according to officials. They weighed 1,071 pounds and have an estimated street value of $482,000.

Officers took the driver into custody.

Witness: San Diego police shoot knife-wielding woman warning it's Judgement Day

    View more videos at: http://nbcsandiego.com.

By Brandi Powell and R. Stickney, NBCSanDiego.com

A witness to a fatal shooting Saturday described a tragic scene in which a knife-wielding woman warned a man that it was Judgment Day before she was shot and killed by a San Diego police officer.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

“We thought it was a couple having an argument but apparently it was more than that,” said Omar Orihuela. He was drawn into the dramatic confrontation when he heard a woman yelling outside his Bay Terraces home.

"She was using a lot of religious words, accusing him of things and telling him Judgment Day was here and she had 1,000 souls behind her,” said Orihuela.

“She was very eloquent. She was very, very loud. A lot of people came out,” he said.

Shortly after midnight, San Diego police were called to the 6800 block of Quebec Court where a woman had stabbed her 9-year-old son with a knife and hit her 16-year-old son in the head with a vase.

They were met by a 43-year-old man who said his girlfriend had stabbed him and the children, police said.

Lt Jorge Duran with the San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit said the woman was in the parking lot when officers arrived.

“She was armed with a knife. The officer ordered the female to drop the knife several times according to witnesses who heard the officer calling out to her,” Duran said.

The woman raised the knife above her head and charged at the officer, witnesses told officials.

That’s when Orihuela said he heard three shots.

"As soon as the police drew his gun I figured it wasn't safe for me to be watching anymore, so I closed my window, and my door, and then I saw the shots, and we saw the shots we just closed the door completely, and kneeled down, and I told my wife: 'Go into the room with the kids'," he said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identification has not been released. The county medical examiner is planning an autopsy on Sunday.

"When the stretcher came her son or relative was yelling: 'Why did you do it mom, why did you do it'," Orihuela said.

The 9-year-old was hospitalized at Rady Children’s Hospital with multiple stab wounds and is expected to survive his injuries according to Duran.

The boyfriend was transported to Mercy Hospital and is expected to survive his injuries as well, officials said.

The officer who shot the woman has been placed on administrative duty while the investigation is conducted.

Police: Drug runners use magnets to clasp pot to unsuspecting woman's car

San Diego Police Dept. via NBCSanDiego.com

Approximately 30 pounds of pot were secured to the undercarriage of a woman's vehicle using magnets. Detectives say she unknowingly transported the drugs across the border.

    By Monica Garske, NBCSanDiego.com

San Diego narcotics detectives are investigating an incident in which a woman may have unknowingly transported a large quantity of marijuana across the border.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

According to investigators, a 33-year-old woman who lives in Mexico and works in downtown San Diego crossed the border in her personal vehicle around 3 a.m. Friday.

    Read original report at NBCSanDiego.com

She arrived at work early and was seated inside her car when, at about 4 a.m., two unknown males approached her parked vehicle and began removing items from the undercarriage.

Investigators say the woman startled the men, and they ran to a black sedan nearby and took off.

The woman contacted police officers, who discovered six packages had been secured to the undercarriage of the woman’s vehicle with strong magnets.

Inside the packages officers found more around 30 pounds of marijuana.

Investigators believe the woman unknowingly transported the drugs across the border. At this point, it is unclear who actually strapped the marijuana to her car.

No arrests have been made, and police say the investigation is ongoing.

Narcotics detectives want to remind drivers to check their vehicle before crossing the border to ensure it’s free of contraband, illegal items or unknown items.

Thank God for her she didn't get stopped at the border. That would have been hard to explain. Actually it's a bit frightening she didn't given she had 6 large packages attached to the bottom of the car. They used to use mirrors, what ever happened to simple solutions?

Border Patrol agent cleared of charges he abused undocumented immigrant

    NBC 7 San Diego

Luis Fonseca, center, leaves the courthouse in downtown San Diego after his acquittal.

By Paul Krueger and R. Stickney, NBCSanDiego.com

Jurors acquitted a U.S. Border Patrol agent of charges he abused an undocumented immigrant.

Luis Fonseca hugged his attorney just moments after jurors returned the verdict in San Diego Friday.

Prosecutors had charged Fonseca with a felony civil rights violation arguing the agent kneed and choked a 27-year-old immigrant the Border Patrol's Imperial Beach station in July 2011.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Jurors saw a video tape of the incident, captured by a surveillance camera inside the station.

Fonseca's lawyer, Stuart Adams, said that video was incomplete and misleading. He also said the alleged victim faked his injuries.

During the trial, Fonseca was on unpaid administrative leave. He’s lost everything from his dignity to his house and his car, Adams said.

Outside court, Adams said the verdict will help restore his client's reputation.

"Clearly this is a huge step,” Adams said. “This was the block that was in the way. It's been pushed aside."

He added that his client loves the Border Patrol and hopes to return to his position with the agency.

In a statement released following the verdict, U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy expressed disappointment.

“We believe it is our responsibility to stand up for the civil rights of everyone and felt this was an important case to bring. The U.S. Attorney’s office will always elect to bring such cases when we believe the evidence is sufficient to do so -- no matter how tough the case may be.”

Teen dies after being hit in chest with softball on birthday

    By Monica Garske, NBCSanDiego.com

A Ramona, Calif., high school student who turned 16 on Wednesday died after being hit in the chest with a softball during a physical education class, officials confirmed.

The teen -- identified as Taylor Dorman by friends, fellow students and Ramona High School principal Tony Newman -- collapsed on a school field after being struck by a ball just before 11:30 a.m. local time (2:30 p.m. ET).

Newman confirmed that Wednesday was the 10th-grader's birthday.

Dorman was airlifted to Palomar Hospital. Details on the teen’s condition at the time of his transport to the hospital were not immediately released.

The San Diego County medical examiner’s office will determine Dorman's official cause of death at a later time, as well as confirm whether possible contributing medical conditions played a role in his death.

On Wednesday night some students gathered at Ramona High School to mourn the sudden loss of their classmate. Students signed a memorial poster for Dorman and placed flowers near the poster.

Last May, an 18-year-old student at Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, Calif., died suddenly after collapsing in the school gym.

In that instance, senior football star Anthony Vaeao was playing basketball with friends when he fell to the ground. He was rushed to hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later.

In August 2012, a report released by the medical examiner’s office determined Vaeao's cause of death stemmed from a heart problem, with obesity listed as a contributing factor.

24-year-old dies after wisdom teeth surgery

    View more videos at: http://nbcsandiego.com.

By Melissa Pamer and Tony Shin, NBCSanDiego.com

A family is asking questions after a 24-year-old man died following an oral surgeon's operation to remove his wisdom teeth late last month.

Marek Lapinski, of Murrieta, Calif., went into cardiac arrest during the common surgery, according to medical records provided by a friend of the family.

Lapinski died three days after the March 21 surgery at a clinic run by Dr. Steven Paul in Temecula, Calif.

Thomas Keiser, the friend of Lapinski's family, called the death a "senseless tragedy."

Paul's attorney said in an email that the surgeon provides "state of the art services and monitoring for his patients," but wrote that "no surgical procedure is without risk."

"All standard protocols" were followed during surgery, Paul's attorney Clark Hudson said in the email.

"The circumstances regarding Mr. Lapinksi’s complications are not completely understood. What is understood is that Mr. Lapinski’s complications occurred despite the fact there were no apparent contraindications for his oral surgery, routine anesthetic medications were being used for the procedure, and immediate measures were undertaken to revive the patient as soon as the patient began to decompensate," Hudson wrote.

The ambulance report states Lapinski's doctor told first responders that he began to wake up and cough during the procedure, and was then given propofol, a surgical anesthetic that killed singer Michael Jackson. Lapinski had "surgical gauze in (his) airway," the report stated, as well as a "small 'surgical cone'" that could not be removed.

Lapinksi was taken to Rancho Springs Medical Center from Paul's office. The patient was later transferred to UCLA Medical Center, according to Keiser.

    More news from NBCSanDiego.com

An investigator at the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner said Lapinski's body still had not been examined, so no cause of death was available.

April Lapinski told NBC4 her son had been an "good kid."

"Our lives are ruined," April Lapinski said. "We don’t have him and he was the center of all of our lives."

She wants a full investigation of the death.

Marek Lapinski was a founding partner in a San Diego company called Total 3rd Dimension, which developed thermal and night-vision equipment for military use.

Lapinski had grown up in Wexford, Penn., and attended Duquesne University before moving to the San Diego area for work.

He played football at Duquesne, where a coach told a local Patch website that he was being mourned.

A day before his surgery, he had tweeted, "gettin my wisdom teeth out tomorrow. Loading up on some #soup and #yogurt."

A memorial page for Lapinski has been set up on Facebook. The website in his honor includes a way to make donations for a memorial fund.

    By Olsen Ebright, NBCSanDiego.com

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Rescue workers saved a hiker who was trapped under rocks for as many as eight days without any food and water, according to firefighters.

Hiker Ramon Llamas and his German shepherd-mix "Molé" discovered the man about 8:30 a.m. PT (11:30 a.m. ET) Monday on Mount Rubidoux in Riverside, Calif.

"I said to the guy, 'You need help? Are you OK?' When he reacted, he says, 'Somebody there? Please don't leave me. Don't leave me,'" Llamas said. "'You got some water?' And I gave him water, and a minute later, he said, 'You got some more?' Are you by yourself? 'Yeah, I'm a tourist here. I'm hungry.'"

About an hour later, rescue workers were able to free the 44-year-old man whose foot was pinned under rocks. He was hospitalized with symptoms of dehydration.

    More news from NBCSanDiego.com

The man -- who identified himself as Paul -- told firefighters he lived "back east" and was trapped for four to six days, although officials said it could have been as long as eight days because the victim was unconscious at times.

The man did not have any food or water with him, firefighters said.

Gunman opens fire with assault rifle outside fast-food restaurant; 1 dead

By Wendy Fry, Lea Sutton and Monica Garske, NBCSanDiego.com

SAN DIEGO -- A man was fatally shot at close range by a semi-automatic assault rifle Saturday evening outside a fast-food restaurant, authorities confirmed.

The shooting happened at around 5:30 p.m. PT (8:30 a.m. ET)  in the parking lot of a Carls' Jr. on Sweetwater Road in National City, Calif. The gunman fled the scene after fatally injuring a male victim.

The victim was shot approximately 10 times from a distance of about 10 to 15 feet, according to Lt. Robert Rounds. When police arrived, the victim was lying on the ground in critical condition.

He was transported to UCSD Medical Center, but died a short time later.

Police immediately began searching the area for the suspect, who fled the parking lot in a white 1970s Ford pickup truck with an orange stripe on it.

Investigators roped off the parking lot in the Sweetwater Town and Country Shopping Center with crime scene tape as they searched the area for bullet casings.

    'Boom-boom-boom-boom'
Witnesses Muhammed Camran and Michael Ybarra told NBC 7 San Diego that they were right across the street at the time of the shooting, playing golf at a nearby golf course.

The sudden sounds of gunfire shocked both of them.

“We were over here at the golf course just hitting some balls and we hear a loud ‘boom.’ The first one was really distinctive like ‘boom-boom-boom-boom’ and we kind of ducked because it was out of nowhere,” recalled Camran.

Meanwhile, witness Trevor Hermann was working at Pet Mart, less than 200 yards from the scene of the deadly shooting.

“I was helping a customer, looking at dog food, and then all of a sudden we heard all of the gunshot. Then I went out and thought it could have been someone's backfire from a truck, but I didn’t think that much, and then I looked further away and there was a guy just lying there,” he explained.

Hermann said he saw the suspect speeding away in an orange and white truck that drove right past his storefront.

“It had a little bit of speed on it and it went away a little quick, and that’s how I knew it was that truck that did the shooting,” he added.

Police say witnesses describe the suspect as a Hispanic male wearing a black-hooded sweatshirt. He was last seen driving east on Sweetwater Road in the distinctive truck.

The shooting victim's name has not yet been released. A report from the county Medical Examiner's office confirms the man was a 43-year-old National City resident.

23 years later, police seek boyfriend of strangled woman

    San Diego Police Dept.

Pedro Antonio Guzman-Gonzalez is wanted in connection with a 1990 murder.

    By Monica Garske, NBCSanDiego.com

Exactly 23 years to the day after Maria Vargas was found strangled to death inside a home in Logan Heights, San Diego, homicide detectives renewed appeals for the public’s help in finding her killer.

On March 17, 1990, San Diego Police Department officers responded to reports of a death at a home in the 2900 block of National Avenue.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Vargas’ lifeless body in the bedroom of her boyfriend, Pedro Antonio Guzman.

Detectives say Vargas had been strangled to death. Guzman had fled the scene before police could question or detain him.

Since that St. Patrick’s Day murder more than two decades ago, police have been after Guzman, who’s suspected of killing Vargas.

    More from NBCSanDiego.com

Detectives say it is likely Guzman, who is now 49 years old, fled to Mexico following the murder.

He is described as 5-foot to 5-foot-3, Hispanic and weighing approximately 140 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. Guzman was 26 at the time of Vargas' murder.

On Friday, the SDPD released a photo of Guzman in hopes of locating him and reopening the case.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact the SDPD Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. Up to a $1,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of Guzman, and tipsters may remain anonymous.

32-year-old man adopted by former foster mother

    View more videos at: http://nbcsandiego.com.

By Monica Garske and Lea Sutton, NBCSanDiego.com

Nearly 20 years after being ripped apart from his foster parents, a 32-year-old man was officially adopted Friday in San Diego, Calif., by the woman he has always considered to be his mother.

Maurice Griffin was abandoned as a baby. At age three, he found a loving family in foster parents Lisa Godbold and her husband, Charles.

“The whole reason we got into foster care in the first place is because we wanted to adopt Maurice,” recalled Godbold.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Over the next 10 years, Godbold and her husband eventually became Griffin’s foster parents, giving him the stable, happy home he had always dreamed of.

“It was a great, loving family,” said Griffin, remembering the trips to Sunday school and brunch with his foster family.

But Griffin’s happy family life didn’t last long.

Griffin says the foster system failed him, and he was abruptly taken away from the family at age 13. He and Godbold didn’t want to get into specifics about why Griffin was taken from the family, but both of them agreed it was a very painful and difficult time.

“It’s like being abducted from your family and being told to deal with it,” said Griffin.

“It was torture; it broke our hearts,” added Godbold. “Not knowing where he was and not being able to have contact with him was like having a child abducted.”

From there, Griffin bounced from other foster homes to group homes, where he says he was abused and mistreated.

Through the years and tough times, Griffin held on to his fond family memories.

Meanwhile, Godbold tried time and time again to find her long lost foster son – never giving up.

In 2009, Godbold tracked Griffin down on the internet using social media. From that point on, they vowed never to lose each other again.

Their enduring mother-son bond led them to a San Diego courtroom Friday, where Godbold officially adopted Griffin as her son.

”I’m excited – this is 20 years overdue,” said Griffin minutes before heading into the courthouse with his soon-to-be mother.

Though the adoption proceeding was short, Griffin said it was the moment he’s been waiting for all his life.

“This is probably the happiest moment in my life. I love my family and I’m happy to be home,” said Griffin, adoption paperwork in hand.

Godbold was also overwhelmed with emotion and said adopting Griffin – even at 32 years old – was a privilege.

“This completes the circle. He’s always been my son, but this just completes the circle,” she added.

Griffin now joins Godbold and her two biological children to form a happy family once again. Sadly, Godbold’s husband passed away during the time they lost contact with Griffin.

Griffin said he would have loved to be adopted by Charles Friday too, as he was a man he always admired and loved. Both Godbold and Griffin believe Charles was proudly watching over them on this special day.

Their story of family, love, loss, struggle and perseverance is something they hope will impact other foster children and foster families out there.

Godbold says the message is simple: don’t give up.

“Don’t give up – persevere. Keep looking for that love, that family connection, whether it’s with an infant or your 32-year-old child,” she added.

Griffin lives in San Diego and Godbold lives in San Jose, Calif., but now that they’re mother and son, they’ll be getting together often.

“She’s my mother,” said Griffin. “She has always been my mother.”

Two teens shot dead in California park; two others wounded

    View more videos at: http://nbcsandiego.com.

    By Sarah Grieco, NBCSanDiego.com

Four teenagers were involved in a shooting at an Oceanside, Calif., park Wednesday, according to police. Two of the teenagers were found with gunshot wounds and two were dead, investigators said.

The incident happened around 9 p.m. at Libby Lake Park in the city near the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base.

Oceanside Police received multiple calls of shots fired at 8:50 p.m. They scoured the park and found one person shot and injured.

A couple of minutes later they found two other people shot and killed, then another person shot and injured in the same general area. At least of the two victims were shot more than once, officials said.

Witnesses said they saw several people running from the scene.

Officers are looking for two or more suspects, possibly in a gray or silver 2005 or 2006 Toyota Tacoma or Toyota Tundra extended-cab pickup.

Edgar Sanchez Rios, 16, and 13-year-old Melanie Virgen were found dead at the scene. The two wounded victims are also younger than 18 and were taken to Palomar Medical Center.

    More news from NBCSanDiego.com

Melanie was an 8th-grade student at Caesar Chavez Middle School and Edgar was a student at El Camino High School. Friends and family created a makeshift memorial at the park for the victims.

“The things that happen in this park startle me to death,” said Lt. Leonard Cosby of Oceanside Police Department. “It shouldn’t be happening.”

This shooting took place not far from a memorial in the park for a fatal shooting that occurred here just under two years ago.

The bodies of Fernando Felix Solano, 16, and Sandra Salgado, 14, were found May 3, 2011, in the northeast area of the park, which is located north of the San Luis Rey River.

The residential area is near several schools, including Libby Lake Elementary.

“I don’t want it to be a reflection on either the people in this park or the city of Oceanside, because it’s not that way,” Cosby said.

Cosby said his heart goes out to the community because he has worked a majority of his 26 years in the area.

The victim's friends are pleading for any new information of a suspect.
