Fighter jets escort Seattle-bound flight in hijack scare

By Kari Huus, Staff writer, NBC News

A Seattle-bound flight from Hawaii landed safely, and on time, Thursday night after U.S. military jets were ordered to escort it because of hijacking concerns, NBC has learned.

FBI sources say the Honolulu field office of the bureau received a call, from the ground, stating that an individual aboard the flight was going to hijack the plane.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command, NORAD, called in fighter jets from the Oregon National Guard which flew alongside Alaska Air flight 819 from Kona until it landed at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport at about 7 p.m. (10 p.m. ET).

FBI agents met the plane when it landed in Seattle, and the individual was taken off the plane without incident, according to NBC-affiliate in Seattle, KING 5.

One individual is in FBI custody at this hour being questioned by agents, the report said.

According to Alaska Airlines officials, that individual slept through most of the flight, nothing out of the ordinary happened onboard and the crew did not perceive any danger.

The FBI says there is also no danger at the Seattle airport.

F-15 fighter jets intercept two small planes in Obama airspace

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Two F-15 fighter jets intercepted two small planes that strayed into President Barack Obama's airspace during a campaign visit to Connecticut on Monday and the planes landed without incident, NBC's affiliate in Connecticut reported.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command said the fighter jets intercepted a small plane over Long Island, New York, at 7 p.m. ET and followed it until it landed, and that the pilot was met by law enforcement authorities. (Link to statement on Facebook)

Roughly half an hour later, the jets intercepted a second small plane in Connecticut near New Haven, but it was allowed to continue to its destination, NORAD said.

NBC Connecticut reported that the planes had entered airspace temporarily restricted during Obama's visit to the state.

Typical pilot error so they were in his air space. Big deal and I'm sure somebody will try to make a big story out of this.Who cares.

NORAD intercepts plane loaded with pot in Obama no-fly zone

    Msnbc.com's Alex Witt reports.

By msnbc.com staff and NBC News

Updated at 7 p.m. ET: President Barack Obama may have inadvertently won a skirmish in the war on drugs Thursday when a small plane that encroached on his airspace was intercepted and found to be hauling more than 20 pounds of marijuana, sources told NBC News.

About 2 p.m. ET, the single-engine Cessna 182 entered airspace that had been restricted as Obama was returning to Los Angeles International Airport aboard Marine One, the presidential helicopter, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, said in a statement.

    KNBC-TV

President Barack Obama was returning to the Los Angeles airport, where he arrived Wednesday aboard Air Force One.

The pilot never responded to repeated attempts to make contact by air traffic controllers, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Two F-16 fighter jets from March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County intercepted the plane and followed it as it made its way to a safe landing, where the pilot was met by local authorities, NORAD said.

NORAD would give no further details, citing operational security, but sources told NBC News Justice Department correspondent Pete Williams that the plane was escorted to Long Beach Airport. Authorities searched the plane and found about 22 pounds of marijuana on board, the sources said.

Well, now it is official. Obama is more effective by accident than his predecessor could be on purpose.
