No jail time for former 'teacher of the year' who had sex with student

    By Jen Maxfield, NBCNewYork.com

A former "teacher of the year" won't serve any prison time after admitting she had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student.

A state Superior Court judge in Newark, New Jersey, sentenced 33-year-old Erica DePalo to lifetime parole supervision.

She also will have to forfeit her teaching certificate and register as a sex offender.

A tearful DePalo made a brief statement in court Monday expressing regret for her actions, and saying she was trying to rebuild her life.

She pleaded guilty in February to child endangerment.

Prosecutors said the Montclair resident had a brief sexual relationship with a student in her honors English class at West Orange High School.

She initially was charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and child endangerment and could have faced up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Her attorney, Anthony Alfano, said DePalo suffers from bipolar disorder and was on bad medication that can cause errors in judgment.

Another women who needed a "safe" sexual relationship. They either pick older men or boys. Everyone assumes that since it was a woman and a younger male that no harm was done. That isn't always the case. Some boys are emotionally harmed by these exploitive sexual encounters.

Third ex-teacher pleads guilty in student sex case that rocked NJ school

    By Dan Stamm, NBCPhiladelphia.com

A former Triton High School teacher pleaded guilty Thursday in relation to a sex-with-students scandal at the school in Camden County, N.J.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Former Triton High School Nick Martinelli, 28, of Cherry Hill, pleaded guilty Thursday to a fourth-degree count of hindering apprehension. In court he admitted to impeding the progress of investigators looking into an improper relationship he later admitted to having with a Triton student, according to a press release from Camden County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Jason Laughlin.

As part of his plea Martinelli isn't allowed to have contact with the former student and must forfeit his teaching certificate. He will receive a year of probation when he is sentenced on April 12, according to Laughlin.

Two other former teachers, Jeff Logandro, 32, of Blackwood, N.J. and Daniel Michielli, 27, also of Blackwood, both pleaded guilty in February to third-degree conspiracy to commit official misconduct after they carried on improper physical relationships with students that they held authority over, Camden County Prosecutor Warren Faulk announced in a press release at the time.

Both Logandro and Michielli will be sentenced Friday, prosecutors said.

Former Triton principal Catherine DePaul, 55, of Woodbury also pleaded guilty in February to a disorderly person charge of failure to report a crime, after she didn't report the teachers' alleged abuses to law enforcement, prosecutors said.

"It's obvious there existed a culture at Triton High School whereby teachers thought they could get away with improper relationships with their students and administrators turned a blind eye," Faulk said after the educators were arrested last year.

Prosecutors say that in April 2012 that a Triton student alerted a substitute teacher that teachers were having sex with students. In turn, that teacher told DePaul but prosecutors say that the principal failed to report the allegations to law enforcement.

As part of her plea, DePaul agreed to forfeit her job, never hold a public job in New Jersey again and serve one year of probation, prosecutors said.

The school’s vice principal, Jernee Kollock, still face charges.

Firefighter charged in 12-year sex slavery case commits suicide

    View more videos at: http://nbcconnecticut.com.

Frank Meyer, a 911 dispatcher and volunteer firefighter charged with slave trafficking and sexual assault, committed suicide on Tuesday night while out on bail in Vermont.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Vermont State Police arrested Meyer, 39, a volunteer West Haven, Conn., firefighter, in Ludlow, Vt., on Feb. 27 after a sting operation in which the victim wore a wire.

Brett Bartolotta, a 42-year-old former firefighter with the department, was also arrested and charged in connection with the case.

Police said the firefighters bribed the boy with money and gifts, including a dirt bike and a hunting bow, since 2001 to get him to perform hundreds of sexual favors over the 12-year span.

    Read more stories at NBCConnecticut.com

The boy first met Bartolotta when he went to a friend's house to ride dirt bikes and Bartolotta approached the teen to join his racing team, according to documents filed with Superior Court in Vermont.

Soon after, Bartolotta offered to sell the teen a dirt bike, which he could pay off in weekly installments, according to documents.

The interaction turned sexual when the teen was unable to make a payment, according to officials.

Bartolotta offered himself as someone for the boy to speak with about problems and also to teach him about sex, court reports states.

Bartolotta paid the teen for sex acts until he paid off the bike, according to court records.

About two weeks after the bike was paid off, it was stolen.

The victim told police that he thought, in hindsight, that Bartolotta might have stolen the bike to continue meeting at his house.

When Bartolotta eventually got married and sold his condo, Bartolotta would take the teen to houses of construction clients in the Ludlow area, according to court documents.

A year after the first meeting, Bartolotta introduced the victim to Meyer, and the sex acts would occur on Friday nights, prior to Saturday races, according to court documents.

Meyer is currently a volunteer firefighter for the West Haven Fire Department at Engine 23. he has been a 911 dispatcher for the city of West Haven since 1999, according to city officials.

He is also the captain of the explorer program, a department program for youths, and photos online show him standing in front of Explorer Post 3.

As time passed, Meyer brought teens from Connecticut to Vermont and once asked the victim to perform a sex act on another 17-year-old boy, according to court documents, but the teen refused.

Police said Meyer also asked the teen to alter his appearance to look young and boyish and offered to pay for a new hunting bow in exchange for sex.

Bartolotta was a former volunteer firefighter for the department several years ago and now lives in Cavendish, Vermont, according to O'Brien. He also served as a past president of the Explorers, according to the department's Web site.

Police made the arrests on Wednesday after the victim recorded a conversation with Meyer at a Vermont restaurant. On the recording, Meyer acknowledged knowing the victim since he was 12, and alluded to sexual acts, police said. After Meyer was taken into custody, police searched Bartolotta's home and took computers and a gray box into evidence.

When police interviewed Bartolotta. he admitted to a "minor sexual relationship" with the victim over a five-year period, according to police, then later admitted to a more in-depth relationship that involved bondage and sex toys.

He also told police that the sexual encounters happened when his wife was at work and out of the house so they would not be discovered, according to court records.

Meyer and Bartolotta were both charged with aggravated sexual assault and slave trafficking. Their bail was set at $50,000.

They each pleaded not guilty in court.

Porn star teaches sex seminar at the University of Illinois

    By Alexandria Fisher, NBCChicago.com

A University of Illinois residence hall reportedly brought in a former porn star to educate student residents in a week-long sex education seminar.

The program, which began Feb. 3, featured former porn star Annie Sprinkle and ended Thursday with an "orgasm workshop," according to a blog post by campusreform.org.

    Follow @NBCNewsWorld

The program, hosted by resident community Unit One, included speeches by Sprinkle about life as a porn star, a presentation on "Eco-sexology," a free sidewalk sex Clinic, and a screening of "Annie Sprinkle's Amazing World of Orgasm."

The week reportedly involved hands-on, but not nude, participation from University of Illinois students and was funded with student fees paid by residents of the community, the blog reported.

Sprinkle, an internationally known artist, visits colleges around the country to teach sex education and her work is frequently used in educational programs and equal rights campaigns.

This seminar is not the first time she has presented at the university, as she spoke at the school nearly two years ago. But as she expanded her sex talks to the campus' Allen Hall at the end of the week, community members and students had mixed reactions to the racy films and clips, the Daily Illini reported.

Former teacher indicted over claims she had sex with four of her students

    View more videos at: http://nbcdfw.com.

    By Ben Russell, NBCDFW.com

A former high school teacher in Texas has been indicted over accusations she had sex with four of her students.

According to a September 2011 search warrant, parents of a graduate and former student of Tonya Flink, 39, reported to police that their son was living with her at her apartment.

They told police that they believed the relationship began while their son was a senior at Haltom High School in Haltom City, which is near Fort Worth.

In the same month, investigators learned of other relationships, according to the warrant.

According to the report from police, the former student in question admitted that the relationship began when he would stay after school and Flink would help him with his grades. Flirting led to Flink "pushing herself onto him," according to police.

Flink would go on to tell the student that "she loved him," that she "liked young Hispanic kids like him" and that their eventual sexual relationship involved "everything you could imagine," police said in the warrant.

Police also reported that they found evidence that Flink made at least 850 phone calls to one of the students in question over a period of a few months.

Investigators also reported that she bought clothes for some of them and that she went to the home of one of her students and secretly knocked on his back door so she could meet with him.

    Read more news from NBCDFW.com

According to police, Flink resigned from her position as a computer technology teacher at Haltom High in August 2011, shortly before police began their initial investigation.

Flink went on to teach for a time at Carter Riverside High School in the Fort Worth Independent School District, but resigned from her position long before the district ever learned of her alleged involvement with students, a district representative said.

She was indicted by a Tarrant County grand jury.

Flink is free after posting $10,000 bond. She is due in a Tarrant County courtroom next week, according to her attorney.

Yes, I know, and I agree with everyone that for a teacher to have a relationship with a student is just awful and stinks. Why, when I was an oversexed, young kid in high school, could I not have her as my teacher? Life is strange....

Florida county busts 78 people in crackdown on online prostitution

    Polk County Sheriff's office

An image of the 78 suspects netted in a crackdown on prostitution in Polk County, Fla., posted on the Polk County Sheriff's Facebook page.

By Kari Huus, Staff Writer, NBC News

Officers from Polk County, a largely rural area sandwiched between Tampa and Orlando, arrested 78 people on prostitution and related charges between Thursday and Sunday in an ambitious undercover vice crackdown on online solicitation.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

"It’s sending a message," said Polk County public information officer Donna Wood. "We don’t want it in our county. We do not want prostitution or anything with illicit sexual activity in our county… We don’t want your drugs, your diseases, and all the other crimes that accompany it."

The operation was run by third-term Sheriff Grady Judd, who spearheaded an effort decades ago, when he was in the vice squad, to shut down hundreds of Polk county strip clubs, adult book shops, massage parlors, and video stores and other operations that tend to facilitate prostitution.

According to a profile published by the Tampa Bay Times, moral outrage once prompted Grady to even run a sting on a suspected child porn publisher in Colorado, and then send two officers more than 1,800 miles to arrest him.

This time, the third-term sheriff was targeting the newest gathering place for prostitutes and potential clients — Internet sites such as backpage.com and Craigslist. The operation targeted both the prostitutes who posted Internet ads offering their services in Polk, as well as would-be customers who responded to fake ads — with the presumably unintended effect of luring some of the suspects into Polk county from outside.

The sheriff's office announced the crackdown with much fanfare on Monday, offering up details of who-agreed-to-what-sex-act-for-what-price, as well as the jobs, marital status and other details about the perpetrators. He posted their pictures on Facebook.

The sheriff’s office reported that 18 of the 78 people booked into Polk County jail admitted they were married, including two suspects who were married to each other. It noted that more than 30 of the suspects had criminal histories — including nine registered felons. Fourteen were on public assistance and 22 said they were unemployed.

They said 50 of the suspects were working — citing jobs that included "microbiologist," "city employee," "food server" and "porn star." One is a Law Enforcement Academy trainee who was preparing to graduate this week, police said.

"Some will argue that this is a misdemeanor, and a victimless crime. That is absolutely not true," said Wood, adding that one of the suspects left her three small children with a virtual stranger when she set out to turn a trick with a client who turned out to be an undercover officer.

Another suspect, who is married, allegedly arranged with the undercover officer to pay extra for unprotected sex, she said.

"It’s a question of quality of life. The sheriff is adamant about maintaining that quality of life for our residents," Wood said. "One of the ways we do that is by fighting prostitution."

All the suspects were booked into the Polk County jail, though many have since posted bond and been released.

According to Wood, this is typical when the county runs vice operations, which it does regularly.

"They frequently are arrested and bond out and hopefully they never come back to our county," she said.

50 Grades of Grey: Harvard becomes latest college to accept BDSM club

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

    University of Chicago

A poster promotes the Nov. 1 meeting of RACK, the BDSM club at the University of Chicago. Click the image for the full-size version.

It's a club where you might, in fact, use a club: Harvard University has joined the small but growing roster of U.S. colleges that have approved official student organizations devoted to kinky sex.

Follow M. Alex Johnson on Twitter and Facebook.

Harvard administrators were to formally approve the group, Harvard College Munch, on Friday, The Harvard Crimson reported. The recognition means the group, which has grown to 30 members since its informal founding earlier this year, can officially meet on campus to discuss issues related to the bondage-discipline, dominant-submission, and sadism-masochism communities, known collectively as BDSM.

More important, its founder told the newspaper, speaking under the pseudonym "Michael," is that the move bestows "the fact of legitimacy."

While Harvard's club drew widespread attention this week, it's far from the only BDSM club officially recognized by, or at least tolerated at, U.S. colleges.

At the University of Minnesota, Kinky U is Student Organization No. 2370. It meets weekly — after office hours "for maximum safety and confidentiality" — to discuss "topics related to kink and the kinky community."

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

At Tufts University in Medford, Mass., Tufts Kink started meeting this semester.

"I think there’s a number of students who feel sort of isolated and alienated, and I think it's very powerful for them to have just a place where they can express themselves and a place where they can make friends," co-founder Anschel Schaffer-Cohen told The Tufts Daily.

There's no national registry of campus BDSM groups, but consensus is that the oldest is at Columbia University, in New York, where Conversio Virium meets on campus every Monday night at 9.

"Conversio virium" is Latin for "conversion of forces," and the group says it dedicates itself to 'the full exploration of BDSM, both in its sexual and spiritual aspects."

"We encourage acceptance and communication between members," its charter says. "We urge them to learn from each other's play styles and experiences and to set aside any assumptions they may have about who people are and what they do."

Actual sex isn't allowed at such on-campus gatherings, which usually host discussions or the occasional live demonstration of safe and consensual kinky sex.

The point is to "raise general awareness of kink and to promote acceptance and understanding of BDSM," according to the bylaws of Risk-Aware Consensual Kink, or RACK, at the University of Chicago.

RACK is an intellectual group, it says, not a play group. It provides "resources to students who are interested in or curious about BDSM" and demonstrations that "give students an opportunity to learn from experienced members of the BDSM community about safely practicing kink."

... If there's a BDSM club is there an official normal sex club? I'm a pretty liberal guy but I'm thinking such things shouldn't have official clubs in colleges. Sex lives should be private things in my opinion.

Cops: Substitute teacher claims 14-year-old got her pregnant

    By Sevil Omer, NBC News

A 35-year-old Texas woman accused of having sex with a 14-year-old boy and then claiming to be pregnant from the relationship may have worked as a substitute teacher at least once in the boy’s classroom, a school official said.

    Bexar County Sheriff's Office

    Amanda Sotelo, 35.

Amanda Sotelo, a resident of Von Ormy, was booked into a Bexar County jail on Nov. 1 on a charge of indecency with a child, Louis J. Antu, spokesman with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, told NBC News. Bond was set at $75,000.

School district officials learned of the allegations Oct. 31 after the boy's mother alerted them of the relationship, Anne Marie Espinoza, spokeswoman for the Southwest Independent School District in San Antonio, told KSAT-TV.

    Excerpts from the affidavit:

Sotelo stated that the relationship developed over time. She and the victim were both going through problems and confided in each other. It wasn’t until the end of this last school year that they began having a sexual relationship, ‘like grown-ups’ … She further admitted that she and the victim had sex about once a week. Sotelo further stated that she found out she is pregnant when she went to the emergency room the first week of September.

Sotelo further stated she loves the victim and he loves her.

"She's in jail but that's about the only thing we've heard. We've got a lot of family problems going on right now," Johnny Lopez, Sotelo’s son-in-law, told KSAT.com.

Lopez said Sotelo is married, and her husband was out of town. They have other children.

Espinoza confirmed that Sotelo had worked as a substitute in several of the district’s schools, and possibly, substituted at least once in the boy’s classroom, KSAT.com reported.

Esponiza told NBC News district officials refused to further comment.

“The district learned of an allegation of inappropriate behavior of a substitute with a high school student,” said the district in a emailed statement. “The district immediately took appropriate actions to ensure the substitute was not on any campus pending an investigation. The district made contact with appropriate agencies including law enforcement. The substitute is no longer employed by the district.”

Child sex abuse survivor on release of Boy Scouts' files: This 'empowers us'

    Courtesy of John Mark Buckland

John Mark Buckland, 42, of Huntington, W. Va., said he was sexually abused by a Boy Scout leader at Travis Air Force Base when he was 12 years old in 1982. The Boy Scouts' secret file documenting that abuse will be made public under a court order on Thursday, along with more than 14,500 pages of previously confidential documents detailing accusations of child sex abuse within the organization.

By Miranda Leitsinger, Staff Writer, NBC News

Updated at 2:35 pm ET to reflect release of the report:
John Buckland was 12 years old when an assistant Scoutmaster sexually abused him on an Air Force base in California. He has been waiting years for the day when a secret Boy Scouts file documenting that abuse three decades ago would be made public.

That day came Thursday, when more than 14,500 pages of previously confidential documents created by the Boy Scouts of America detailing accusations of child sex abuse within the organization were released under an Oregon Supreme Court order.

    Follow @mimileitsinger

“It unveils all the secrecy, or at least a good portion of it, and the secrecy is the biggest demon there is when it comes to things like this, because it’s by being hidden that it basically just eats people away like a cancer,” Buckland, 42, of Huntington, W. Va., told NBC News.

“I think the release of the files will be instrumental as far as victims are concerned in being able to see that the dialogue is out there, and what I’m hoping to see is that there will be some really good self discovery of other people who haven’t come forward, people who will get a chance to see the files and actually being able to start processing it and getting their experience out in the open. But as long as the files were hidden that would never happen," he added.

The court ordered the Boy Scouts to release the “ineligible volunteer” files from 1965 to 1985 that chronicle suspected or confirmed instances of child sex abuse. Media organizations had sued for the release of the files, part of a 2010 case in which a jury decided that the Scouts were negligent in allowing a former assistant Scoutmaster to associate with the organization's youth after he admitted molesting 17 boys in 1983.

Lawyers for victims of the abuse say that the files, which they have dubbed the “perversion files,” represent reports of Scouts allegedly abused by more than 1,200 different Scoutmasters and other adult volunteers. The files, which includes Buckland’s abuser, were released Thursday on www.kellyclarkattorney.com.

    View more videos at: http://nbcdfw.com.

A report by the Boy Scouts in September said that 829 of the files from Jan. 1, 1965, to June 30, 1984, involved suspicions or confirmations of inappropriate sexual behavior with 1,622 youth. The report was done for the organization by Dr. Janet Warren, a professor of psychiatry and neurobehavioral sciences at the University of Virginia.

At the time, the Boy Scouts said in a letter that they would review their files created from 1965 to the present “and ensure that all good-faith suspicion of abuse has been reported to law enforcement.” They also said that there “have been instances where people misused their positions in Scouting to abuse children, and in certain cases, our response to these incidents and our efforts to protect youth were plainly insufficient, inappropriate, or wrong.”

Boy Scouts admit response to sex abuse was 'insufficient'

On Thursday morning, the organization also noted: “Where those involved in Scouting failed to protect, or worse, inflicted harm on children, we extend our deepest and sincere apologies to victims and their families.”

“While it is difficult to understand or explain individuals’ actions from many decades ago, today Scouting is a leader among youth-serving organizations in preventing child abuse,” the statement added.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

In an interview with NBC DFW, National President Wayne Perry said: "I would ask parents to look at the programs we have and then judge us versus, maybe not the past, but judge where we are today and certainly judge us against any other youth service organization in the world and they will see that your kids are very, very safe."

Buckland said his life spiraled downward after Air Force officials came to his parents’ house on Travis Air Force Base in Vacaville, Calif., with photos depicting his abuse by a Scout leader. He dropped out of high school, got into drugs, attempted suicide twice, had many failed romantic relationships and eventually ended up in prison for two robberies that he confessed to doing.

His abuser was court-martialed and sentenced to hard labor, Buckland said, but it took him decades to figure out the source of what was troubling him since he, like the Boy Scouts, had buried the abuse. He said his life turned around when he got his dream job as a firefighter and then landed a two-year post in Iraq in 2009, where, while online, he came across stories similar to his own.

“That was the first time that I understood the dynamics of what was going on inside of me that flawed my decision-making, that flawed my emotions, that flawed everything and really propelled me in that direction,” he said. “The light bulb goes off and that’s decades later.”

For Buckland, the Boy Scouts’ apologies are insincere and forced. He said they never contacted him since he was abused in 1982 to see if he was okay.

“These files had to be ripped from their hands,” he said, noting that the lawyers who fought the 2010 case, Kelly Clark and Paul Mones, had “taken us from being a piece of paper to being a person that was offended, and that’s a huge difference.”

“This whole thing empowers us,” he said. “We’ve been powerless up to now. We’ve been at the whims of a multibillion-dollar organization that … has all the money to keep us under a desk in a box. And for now, they can’t do it anymore.”

Bronx teacher banned from district after racy photos of student found

    By Sevil Omer, NBC News

A history teacher for the nation’s largest school district has been banned from teaching in New York City for fondling and forcing a student to pose for explicit photos inside a storage cage, according to authorities.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Special investigators for New York City School District say 57-year-old Raemon Matthews took racy photographs of a 17-year-old girl inside a cage used for storage in a classroom at the Samuel Gompers Career and Technical Education High School in the Bronx in 2009.

Earlier this year, Matthews pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor sex abuse for fondling the student. He was sentenced in June to serve one year of probation. Matthews resigned in April.

Attempts by NBC News to contact school officials or union officials to request terms of Matthews’ resignation were unsuccessful on Tuesday.

According to the investigators’ report, Matthews convinced the student to pose for the photos by telling her she needed a portfolio for college recruiters.

Investigators say the student complied with Matthews’s photo sessions because she feared failing the class. She told investigators that when she tried to put a stop to the photo session, Matthews told her “No, boo-boo, we’re just getting started,” The New York Daily News reported.

A custodian found the photos on a CD in 2010 and alerted school officials.

Officials with the New York City Department of Education said Matthews will not be allowed to teach in the district.

Matthews’ lawyer, Jonathan Goltzman, also was unavailable for comment on Tuesday.

He commented earlier that all sides had been satisfied with Matthews' plea. Goltzman told the Daily News: “My client accepted responsibility and he’s moving on with his life.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Real 'hotline': Florida governor gives out sex number instead of one for meningitis

    By NBC News staff

Updated at 6:26 p.m. ET: Florida Gov. Rick Scott mistakenly sent Floridians seeking information on a deadly fungal meningitis outbreak to a sex hot line.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Scott was at a Florida Cabinet meeting on Tuesday when he announced a toll-free hotline's 866 number, but mixed up the numbers, according to WUSF News.

From NBCMiami.com: First fungal meningitis death in Florida

After WUSF News, a public radio station in Tampa, posted the number online a reader notified the news station that the number was directing callers to a very different service.

“Hello boys, thank you for calling me on my anniversary," a woman's voice says in a recording.

A spokesperson for Scott said he inadvertently -- and briefly -- released the wrong number, and then corrected it by providing the number for the Florida Fungal Meningitis Hotline is 866-523-7339.

Front line for meningitis outbreak: the ER

More than 100 fungal meningitis cases have been reported nationally, with about a dozen deaths, including one fatality in Florida.

On Tuesday, Scott also said authorities had contacted nearly 700 of the 1,185 patients linked to facilities that received tainted medicine in Marion, Miami-Dade, Orange and Escambia counties.

Prosecutors: NJ teachers had sexual relations with students, colleagues covered it up

Three teachers are accused of having sex with students, while two school administrators face charges for covering up the scandal. WCAU's LuAnn Cahn reports.

By NBCPhiladelphia.com, NBC News staff and wire reports

Three New Jersey high school teachers have been arrested and accused of having inappropriate sexual relations with three female students, while two school administrators face charges for allegedly covering up the scandal, authorities said Thursday.

Teachers Jeffrey Logandro, Daniel Michielli and Nicholas Martinelli of Triton High School in the Philadelphia suburb of Runnemede voluntarily turned themselves into the authorities on Thursday, NBCPhiladelphia.com reported.

    Read the story on NBCPhiladelphia.com

Principal Catherine DePaul and Vice Principal Jernee Kollock also facing charges of official misconduct for allegedly knowing about the sexual allegations and not reporting them to law enforcement.

Each of the five adults has been suspended from the school, and each could face at least five years in prison if convicted.

    'Explicit text messages'
The teachers — all men in their late 20s or early 30s — are accused of striking up relationships with female students during the 2011-2012 school year. The female students were 17 or 18 at the time and graduated in June, NBCPhiladelphia.com reported.

"It's obvious there existed a culture at Triton High School whereby teachers thought they could get away with improper relationships with their students and administrators turned a blind eye," said Camden County Prosecutor Warren Faulk at a Thursday afternoon press conference.

"The improper relationships between the teachers and students were fostered through social media as well as socializing in person outside the school. Indeed we uncovered evidence of sexually explicit text messages during instructional periods," Faulk said.

Prosecutors say the three teachers were friends, and the relationships they had with the students lasted from November 2011 until June 2012. The teachers are also accused of taking a trip to Ocean City, N.J. with the victims over a school break.

School policy prohibits teachers from socializing outside of school and communicating by phone or text message.

The arrests were made after a two-month investigation by the Camden County Prosecutors Office.

    'Hooking up' with students
According to court documents, math teacher Dan Michielli, 27, of Blackwood, had intercourse with a student multiple times during the school year. He is charged with official misconduct, sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal sexual conduct.

Gym teacher and boys' soccer coach Nick Martinelli, 28, of Cherry Hill, is charged with official misconduct involving an 18-year-old. He allegedly touched and kissed the girl when she was a student and had intercourse with her after she graduated in June.

Math teacher and girls' track coach Jeff Logandro, 32, of Blackwood, is charged with official misconduct, criminal sexual contact and endangering the welfare of a child. A court filing says he inappropriately touched a female student.

Authorities say a student, not one of the alleged victims, told a substitute teacher in April that teachers were "hooking up" with students. Authorities say the substitute teacher then told DePaul.

Prosecutors say the principal met with the student, who told her she'd been to one of the teacher's homes with a girl who was involved with him and had seen the explicit text messages. Authorities say that DePaul asked her to write an account of what she had heard and that Assistant Principal Jernee Kollock stayed with the student to help her write the statement, even helping her with her grammar — but also making it seem less serious.

Around the same time, Faulk said, DePaul learned one of the teachers had driven an alleged victim and another student to Ocean City in violation of district policy. But, he said, the teacher was merely reprimanded.

Faulk said neither administrator contacted authorities. Both were charged with official misconduct.

Faulk said DePaul later said she wished she had been more concerned for the students than the teachers.

The defendants either could not be reached or did not return messages left Thursday afternoon by The Associated Press. All five are due in court Oct. 11.

The teachers were suspended by the Black Horse Regional School District last month; the administrators were suspended Thursday. Superintendent John Golden said in a statement that the district was cooperating with authorities, notifying families of students of what allegedly happened and offering counseling.

"In addition, we have initiated a comprehensive review of our existing policies, protocols and training and education materials to prevent this from happening again at this or any district school," the statement said.

I think its funny. Its also sort of sad. What they SHOULD have done is waited until AFTER the girls had graduated before hooking up with them. Look it was consentual, and they were shy of being legal by a year. If you get bent out of shape by something like this you need to get help.
