Warnings issued after Tropical Storm Helene forms in Gulf of Mexico

    By NBC News staff

Tropical Storm Helene formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Friday, leading the Mexican government to declare a tropical storm warning for the coast of Mexico.

The storm is moving northwest at 7 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. It's located about 90 miles east-southeast of Tuxpan, Mexico and formed from the remnants of Tropical Depression Seven, according to Reuters.

The Mexican government issued a tropical storm warning from Barra De Nautla to La Cruz, on the coast of Mexico.

The National Hurricane Center predicts that the center of Tropical Storm Helene is expected to make landfall on Saturday, but tropical storm conditions should reach the coast within the warning area sometime Friday night.

Forecasters are also keeping a close eye on Tropical Storm Gordon, which continued to move eastward across the Atlantic Ocean on Friday. This raises the probability that Gordon could threaten the Azores off the coast of Portugal later this weekend.

The tropical storm, which had maximum sustained winds at 65 mph as of Friday morning, could still become a hurricane over the weekend. The storm is moving east at 18 mph and could approach the Azores by Sunday night, NBCMiami.com reported. However, it's still about 1,100 miles west of the islands, according to the National Hurricane Center on Friday.

No coastal watches or warnings are in effect for Tropical Storm Gordon.

    Reuters contributed to this report.
