Muslim group says spray-painting of Oklahoma mosque may be Boston backlash

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News

Police said Saturday they were investigating what a Muslim advocacy group described as an act of vandalism against an Oklahoma City mosque that may have been part of a backlash after the Boston Marathon bombings.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Words were spray-painted on the mosque before dawn Saturday, said Lt. Arthur Gregory, a spokesman for Oklahoma City police. He said he did not know the nature of the words.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations said in a statement that the words were obscenities. It wants the matter investigated as a hate crime and wants state and federal law enforcement to determine whether the vandalism was a reaction to the bombings.

The surviving suspect in the marathon attack, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, has told investigators that he and his brother set off the bombs to defend Islam after the American wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The council said that the same mosque was targeted by paintballs last year, and said there have been other acts of violence against American Muslims since the marathon bombings.

In Malden, Mass., two days after the blasts, a Muslim woman wearing traditional Islamic hijab told police and The Boston Globe that she was punched on the street by a man who cursed at her and shouted, “You are terrorists.”

With all of the extremist Muslims around the World screaming death to America, what do you expect? The basic religious belief of Islam is that you are either a believer or an infidel and you deserve to die. You can't deny that truth. If you do then you are not a true believer.

Off-duty Massachusetts cops caught after egging superior's house

    By Mark Stevenson, NBC News

To serve, protect and … vandalize?

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Three Newton, Mass., police officers were caught by fellow men in blue in Framingham last month after they had egged a house, the MetroWest Daily News reported.

The victim? A Newton police sergeant.

The action took place in the wee hours of Dec. 11, the Daily News reported. Officers responding to a report of “teenagers” egging a house saw two people drive away in a red car, according to the Daily News.

The driver confessed after the car was pulled over but said the egging was “a prank – a joke between friends,” the Daily News quoted a Framingham police spokesman as saying.

The third off-duty Newton officer was picked up as police headed to the house to talk with the homeowner, the Daily News reported.

The eggers were not identified, and no charges have been filed. The eggee said he would handle the incident as an internal police department matter, according to the Daily News.

Vandals draw Hitler mustache on baby Jesus in nativity scene

    View more videos at: http://nbclosangeles.com.

By Janet Kwak and Jason Kandel, NBCLosAngeles.com

Police on Sunday were searching for the person or people responsible for vandalizing Nativity scenes at a Catholic church and a home in a Southern California city.

Someone misspelled "Hail (sic) Hitler" and drew a Hitler mustache on the baby Jesus outside a home in Huntington Beach, police said.

They also put a Nazi symbol on one of the wise men with a black pen.

Homeowner Richard Candlish reported it to police and cleaned up the scene he said he spent a month putting up.

"It probably took less than 15 minutes for someone just to deface all of it," he said.

The case followed another one in which similar scrawlings were found about three blocks away on a Nativity scene at Saint Bonaventure Catholic Parish.

Parishoners reported the vandalism to the police.

Parishoner Max Periolat, 10, said he was offended.

"Who would do such a thing?" he said. "If I saw them I would give them a whopper."

    Police said they were investigating.

'Just sickening': Vandals smash nearly 70 gravestones in Alabama cemetery

Kelly Kazek / The Huntsville Times

Keera Mosley, 9, kneels near the grave of her grandmother, Dessie Lene Mosley, whose tombstone was vandalized in Hatchett Cemetery in Tanner, Ala.

    By NBC News staff

Officials in Alabama are searching for unknown vandals who they say overturned or broke nearly 70 gravestones in a cemetery sometime last week, al.com reported.

    Follow @NBCNewsUS

Limestone County Sheriff Capt. Stanley McNatt told NBC News that the desecration affected nearly 70 percent of the tombstones at Hatchett Cemetery in Tanner, Ala.

Members of the Little Ezekiel Missionary Baptist Church, which maintains the cemetery, suspect the incident occurred sometime between Wednesday and Friday of last week.

Nearly 70 gravestones in Hatchett Cemetery in Tanner were overturned or broken by unknown vandals.

“It’s just sickening,” Howard Mosley, who said the headstones of his parents, aunts and uncles were included in the vandalism, told al.com.

The cemetery predominantly serves African-American families, but McNatt said there was no indication the desecration was a hate crime.

Cemetery board member James Lucas told al.com that his parents’ headstones were among those vandalized and that some families don’t have the money to replace the headstones that were smashed.

Lucas said he has no idea who may have vandalized the cemetery. “Whoever it turns out to be will surprise me,” he said. “There’s no reason why somebody would do that.”

The Limestone County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the incident.

Church members are planning a work day Nov. 17 to try to repair some of the damage.

Man arrested for arson of Ohio Islamic center; mosques increasingly targeted

    Courtesy of The Toledo Blade

A security video captures an image of a man -- believed to be Randy Linn, 52, of Indiana -- who lingered outside the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo as a fire burned inside. Linn was charged Wednesday.

    By Isolde Raftery, NBC News

Police have arrested a man they believe set fire to the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo on Sunday, the Toledo Blade reported.

Randy Linn, 52, of Saint Joe, Indiana, was charged Wednesday with two counts of arson and one count each of aggravated burglary and carrying a concealed weapon. The arson was the latest in a string of recent acts of violence, vandalism and threats against mosques since July, the beginning of Ramadan, a month of fasting for Muslims.

The arson is the latest in a string of threats and vandalism against U.S. mosques since last summer, including a mosque in Joplin, Mo. that burned down in early August – one month after it was the target of another apparent arson.

According to Thom Harmann, host of The Big Picture, the number of anti-Muslim hate groups tripled between 2010 and 2011. Since Aug. 5, nine mosques or places of worship have been vandalized or attacked across the U.S., according to the non-profit, American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

In Hayward, Calif., four people fired lemons, oranges, eggs and BB guns at a mosque. In Ontario, Calif., two women reportedly threw pig legs on the site of a proposed mosque, according to the ADC.

Randy Linn, 52, was charged Wednesday in the arson of an Islamic center in Ohio.

On Aug. 12 in Oklahoma City, vandals shot paintballs at the Grand Mosque while worshipers prayed, according to the Tulsa World.

Previously, in January, a man threw a firebomb into a mosque in Queens, N.Y., according to NBCNewYork.com. There were no injuries.

"We recommend a security guard during prayer hours,” Abed Ayoub, ADC’s legal director told NBC News. "Take measures and use common sense. Keep an eye on people who don’t seem to fit in. We ask them to install video cameras at the doors and throughout the mosque. Limit access to areas such as the kitchen, furnace or storage where someone could hide."

Back in Ohio, Linn was captured by a surveillance camera as he lingered outside the Islamic center at the time of the fire, according to the Blade. Most of the smoke and water damage took place on the second floor of the prayer room, officials told the Blade.

Philly police: Activist who complained about vandalism was the vandal

    By NBC10.com

PHILADELPHIA -- A neighborhood activist who spoke out about the vandalizing of dozens of cars near his home now has been arrested in the case, police say.

    Follow @msnbc_us

David Toledo is accused of slashing tires in the neighborhood, Northeast Detectives Capt. John McGinnis told NBC10.

See video, read the original report on Philadelphia's NBC10.com

At a press conference Wednesday evening, police said Toledo had been arrested and charged with two counts of felony mischief, 47 counts of criminal mischief, false reports and other related offenses.

Police say they questioned Toledo extensively on April 16, the same day the most recent vandalism was reported on Aldine and Teesdale Streets as a dozen or so more cars were targeted.

Toledo has spoken to NBC10 several times since coverage of tire slashings in the area of the 4000 block of Aldine Street and surrounding roads began to surface in February. The vandalism dates back even further than that, according to neighbors.

"I hope the cops get them before the neighbors find out who it is because something bad is going to happen," Toledo said after some cars were vandalized in mid-March. "My wife said 'somebody is watching us, watching the cops' because when they're here nothing happens."

Now police say that it was Toledo who was causing sleepless nights for neighbors concerned that their cars would be vandalized while they slept. A town watch was formed and police even offered a big reward for an arrest in the case.

All along, Toledo, who lives on Aldine Street, was there speaking out against the vandalism.

"This will be the last time that you're going to get my car because you will get caught," Toledo told NBC10 after just his tires were slashed on March 20. "The $10,000 reward, I don't want the money, all I want is their hands so I can smash them so they can never do it again."

It's unclear if Toledo is responsible for all the area vandalism but police do believe he at least committed some of the tire slashings on Teesdale, Aldine and Erdrick Streets, McGinnis said.

Watch US News videos on msnbc.com

NBC10 also spoke exclusively with Toledo's mother, who reacted strongly to her son's arrest.

"I think he's being set up," she said. "He doesn't go around slashing tires. He's got better things to do in life -- he's got a life!"

The local town watch program Toledo claimed to be a part of held a meeting at 7 p.m. at Frankford and Aldine. In spite of Toledo's claims, the town watch says he was never a member of their organization.

Philadelphia Police urged neighbors who feel betrayed by Toledo to not take matters into their own hands.

“Let the justice system take care of Mr. Toledo,” said Capt. Frank Bachmayer. “We don’t want any type of retaliation.”

Vandals captured on video ransacking Florida stores

By Rochelle Ritchie, WPTV NewsChannel 5

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -  Port St. Lucie police are on the lookout for a group of teens vandalizing businesses.

The video was posed on YouTube.

Port St. Lucie police spokesman Tom Nichols confirms that at least one of the incidents in the video occurred in Port St. Lucie, but for now, they will not say which incident it is. Police don't know if the teens are local.

No criminal complaints have been filed with Port St. Lucie Police Department, according to Nichols.

The YouTube video shows several teenagers knocking items off store shelves.

Read the original story on www.wptv.com

In the five-minute video posted below, the teens are seen ransacking a Walmart store, a Target store, and a Sears store.

    Watch on YouTube

One aisle at a time, the teens knocked items such as paper plates, toilet paper and dog food off the shelves.

Bread once neatly stacked, was thrown on the floor.

They are also seen running through a mattress store, jumping on the beds, before being chased out by a store employee. The teens are also spotted skateboarding into a fountain outside a Friendly’s restaurant.

"What are they gaining by that you know, other than making somebody else's life hard?" says shopper Mark Cobb.

Not all shoppers at a local Port St. Lucie Walmart were disturbed, some found the incident funny.

"I wouldn't think it was that big of a deal unless I had to work in the store and clean it up," said Jason Wolfe.

The video also shows the teens at a local restaurant and other big box retailers where they skateboard their way into display piles.

Psychotherapist Fran Sherman watched the video, and while she cannot legally diagnose them based off the video, she says it's not healthy behavior and obvious the kids have no fear of being caught.

"They're really doing this without regard for society, rules or regulations," Sherman said.

"They're getting joy out of torturing people and things," she added.

Port St. Lucie police continue to look for the teenagers and say it's no laughing matter and criminal charges could be filed.

Mollie Reynolds and Neal Bennett of  WPTV NewsChannel 5 contributed to this report.
